The whole 'energy drink' market is a mystery to me at age 64, sure I've tried a few along the way, but cost and, for some, heart-threatening side-effects have made it easy for me to stick with fountain drinks at gas stations, such as guilt-free pleasure on a hot summer day. And yes, those mountainside stunt runs did get to be too much, nobody wants to see someone die over a mistake or mechanical mishap. it's all supposed to be good times, after all, and stakes that high take away the fun. And cool to see the Santa Cruz and Specialized guys working together and why not, sort of a half-century celebration of the NorCal origins and something cool is bound to happen.
@LaurentiusTriarius Red Bull sells cheaply mass produced product at a boutique markup. They have to sell an image. Around 15yrs ago, Walmart had their own absolutely identical flavor, 2x the size, 1/3 the price. It existed 1 or 2yrs before disappearing from shelves. I few other clones I found disappeared as well. Either people believed the Red Bull hype and thought it was more betterer, or RB has good lawyers. Never felt anything from trying ginseng, taurine, or guarana alone, and now find black tea is just as good a stimulant.
I think it’s important to say that being sponsored by Red Bull is not all about the money because the provide you with training Rehabilitation Centers After you had a big crash to support you. Fabio Wibmer has a documentary about that and it’s very interesting
That was something we were going to get round to, but waffled on about the other stuff. It’s an important point, I’ve seen it really help some athletes
As was put to me by a long term World Cup DH mechanic, Red Bull is a great wicket with the top tier medical care on immediate call wherever you are in the world, and follow up rehab. Monster is $$$$$$ with the rest up to the athlete.
Off topic, but I love these two! The synergy! As rider who started out in the late 90’s, the only media we had was MBUK magazine and the occasional video cassette. These two were some of my biking heroes, so to see them still going and involved in the sport brings back so many great memories!
My best mate of 30 years has drunk Red Bull for the past 15-plus years. A postman and biker, he's totally addicted to it now. He must have his two four-packs every day to function. He's currently at the doctor's a lot just now because of drinking Red Bull. What has given him the energy and highly addictive drink has messed with his respiratory system, the doctor has told him!
when you really look at whats in it you will never ever drink that poison. It backwards how tobbaco is banned but not that crap. ittastes like shite and sugar thats 😊it... yuk
very true but not quiet as bad for MTBs though- they basically only do the frame, so most shortcummings can be medigated by the components. It is much worse in motorsports.
@@PK48C His manager told it in an interview. They had a really good laugh. It was redbull Belgium. And also probably a bigger amount then most redbullathletes..
I used to work with a guy who works for red bull f1 , he gets paid well and the go off and do stuff like white water rafting and all sorts of stuff in between seasons, he’s been working for them for over 6 years now, I see him on tv everytime f1 is on with a massive Beaming smile. Obviously different sport but it’s made me think I’d quite like to work for them in my next career move.
I knew a guy who worked at Airbus and got a bunch of free carbon fibre and resin from him. Did a carbon fibre repair like that to fix a Citroen radiator's plastic header tank. Ran for another 20,000km like that.
The best part about an energy drink sponsorship is, that you don't have to drink energy drinks, if you're a decent account, you will get cans filled with water
I relate to Neil’s take on energy drinks. But I’d have a similar take on beer so surprised to see Neil promote it. The worst part about these sponsorships is that it especially influences children. The only people on bikes I see with energy drinks are teenagers with some dj/freeride background. As an adult I sometimes forget that red bull actually produces drinks :D
The only difference I can see is that you have to be a certain age (varies by country) to purchase alcohol. Energy drinks have no such legal restrictions. Beer sponsors are more likely to be local shops that only support local events.
To purchase energy drinks in Poland one has to be 18yo, same as alcohol. But that’s more of a fun fact as this restriction was introduced quite recently and most countries probably don’t have it (yet at least).
That canyon gap jump is only 70 feet, those riders were easily clearing 90 and 95 foot gaps on the race trail but if you case one of those you won't ( literally ) die. It's the height that freaks people out.
Great show. #GMBN we need to see Blake vs Neil vs Rich on the hardline course! How many likes does this need to make it happen? I chose energy drink because I love Monster, zero sugar, but also choosing a bike manu may leave you with no ride with the way things have been going.
Energy drinks are also big in snowboarding. So some snowboarders have "drink water" sticker, even if they're sponsored by energy drink corporations. This also reminds me of times when tobacco and alcohol sponsorships were legal (motor sports mostly). At the end of the the day those companies aren't connected to mountain biking nor snowboard. It's PR for them. Sponsorship from an MTB bike or components manufacturer makes more sense to me. Is it often (or does it happen at all) that a rider would refuse a sponsorship for ethical reasons?
I had a friend about 20 years ago who was a regional manager for BMW. When he heard I like bikes, he had one of theirs sent to a local dealership so I could take it for a spin. Had a hard time thinking about how it felt because my brain couldn’t explain a BMW & a bicycle being the same object. 😂
I think if I could choose any sponsorship obviously the money matters because I’d want enough so that I could make a career and not have to worry about a job on the side but also the sponsorship has to mean something to you, I drink energy drinks so I’d definitely be happy with that but I ride a Specialized demo 8 2018 so a specialized sponsor would be great:)
You are the 2nd channel to bring up the "red-bull" topic ! As you called out Ronin (Dunne) getting the sponsorship, I call out "energy-drinks" being re-classified to "athlete enhancing" ! ... Which would be a shame as they're the best sponsors for high end sports.
Whats crazy for me is, i was laying in bed last night before i fell asleep and i was watching dunne's run again and for some reason i thought. Does everyone really want that redbull helmet? I just like to be different when possible 🤙 at this point idk theres too many. Need something new. Energy drinks are nappy anyways but they were smart enough to take the spot 🤷♂️
Have you heard of the new 2lock front hubs for ebikes yet? It's a new German technology that acts as a bike immobilizer in the hubs themselves. With the security bolts, the only way to remove it is to destroy the bike itself, rendering it useless and unroadworthy for thieves. Hopefully, this can be added to some eMTB hubs in the future. It's being released in 2025 and information about the product is available online now.
Drink companies change ownership often. The proven out there” business plan of energy drink companies is too different for them to play with so they leave them alone to keep shareholders happy $$$. Beer companies change hands often and their sponsorships would change often also. Bike brands would be cool sponsors.
Also mentioned Andreu going from Redbull to Monster but didn’t mention that Redbull dropped him a season ago and he got picked up by Monster. Also this happens quite often in Moto when guys change teams and stuff
Companies like Monster and Red Bull sponsor sports because they can legitimately put the majority of the costs down as a tax right off... it's clever marketing which allows them an awful lot of leeway when it comes to imaginative accounting... in the long run, if you take into consideration the tax benefits, along with tv royalties and mass advertising benefits it's a great position for a company to be in.. especially when their customer base is between 15 and 35 years old... few people outside that age range would touch the stuff
Exactly this. I don’t know where they actually get the money in the first place though… who is drinking the stuff?! I have never seen many people drinking it and bless given to them for free at an event.
I mean I definitely wouldn't deny getting sponsored by red bull, but the dream sponsor of mine is forbidden or evil bikes and some component company and/or Mucoff
I’ve got no problem with the energy drink sponsorship because the magnitude of it has almost made it a separate entity to the drink and the action sport brand almost makes the drink an afterthought
#askgmbn I've been back riding MTB for a few years now using a hardtail as suggested for beginners. What are the telltale signs that I'm ready to progress to a dual suspension bike?

I take more caffeine and taurine in pure form (shakes) than two monster per day, which cost peanuts. I might be dying but I won't be poor ...

Korbinian Engstler recently got a sponsorship by Paulaner Spezi (the fizzy pop of a big beer brand). I loved seeing that.

That is a very good point.
