Started collecting in the end of heartgold soulsilver era/ beginning of black and white. The sets I remember opening the most were DP Secret Wonders, HGSS Unleashed, and BW Noble Victories. I wish i could open these sets again...
The era of Pokemon that I first started collecting in was Base Set Series Fossil. I would walk, rollerblade, and or bike to the cornerstone just outside my subdivision to buy a few packs with money earned through landscaping neighborhood lawns.
My kids got me into it during the sun and moon era, a simpler time when we could buy xy for retail and black and white was a reasonable price. I miss those day a bit but I love the alt arts now.
I actually noticed the difference in the smell of cards yesterday when I was going through my collection from my childhood but that might be because of all my slobber and snot from when I was a kid.
As a kid I fondly remember collecting the Team Rocket set, whenever my grampy was going to the bookies he'd buy me a couple of packs to keep me quiet (US translation bookies is a betting shop). Only recently got fully back into collecting and first goal is to try and complete the set.

The smell thing isn't just pokemon either. I do the same when I open old magic packs, I don't know if its the ink they used back in the day or what but there's just a smell that you can't get with the modern packs.
