    The main takeaway here is that you usually have to TRY to get the reactor to go supercritical when other people are around... It takes a small group of sane people to stabilize a reactor, and it takes the collective agreement of everyone in the room to make a reactor fail... There are dozens and dozens of failsafe's and mechanisms to keep a reactor from doing this, and 90% of the time, it's collective human incompetency that causes problems, not the actual reactor itself... Reactors were made to be (nearly) as safe as they can possibly, or reasonably be...

    Years ago, I played that solo and it was *designed* to always end in catastrophe. Not sure if the dev changed it since then. One thing you might like for the game Minecraft is the tech mods that it has. Not sure what some are called now, but there is/was Atomic Science (which relied on many other mods to work interchangeably) where you could build your own nuclear reactor in that game to generate power (typically Redstone Flux (RF for short)). Both Minecraft and Roblox has some really tech-heavy games/mods going for them and all enjoyable.

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 6 месяцев назад +3

      It isn't that it is designed to end in catastrophe, but rather pointing out that it takes multiple people to make any meaningful change in the system. Even in this short edited video, you can see how Ruben repeatedly has to either distract the other players or get them to follow along in order to actually get the system to blow. Which highlights one of the major factors of nuclear reactors, even for Soviet installations during the time of Chernobyl, which is that everyone in the room must be complicit in the incompetence for the series of events to occur. Although that can also be said for basically 99% of industrial incidents, since human incompetence and/or negligence is usually the end culprit.

  • @ScottJPowers
    @ScottJPowers Год назад +307

    The thing about coal and gas that makes them so attractive, besides the high energy yield, is that they are much easier to implement and use. Just light them with a spark and boil water to turn a turbine or push a piston. These other more "green" energy sources need semi and rare earth metals or radioactive materials, all of which are harder to find and use. Hydroelectric power and wind turbines are perhaps the easiest of these green power sources to implement but hydroelectric power relies on large bodies of water and wind turbines need wind, which isn't always available and is rather unpredictable. I have come up with an alternative solution. Systems that can absorb and utilize ambient energy, such as stray EM radiation, and ambient heat. Some of this comes from sunlight but absorbing the heat from it would be easier to do than making a solar panel that only works when visible sunlight is shining on it.

      Check out Heliostat or Solar Power Tower plants when you’ve got the chance. That’s a really good example of what you’re describing.
      Geothermal power has also been suggested, the problem is either:
      A.) You’re drilling much deeper than has been done before, to reach metamorphic rock. Think about the problems fracking causes, and you begin to see the problems with this.
      B.) You have to build on active volcanic land. Its one thing to build, say, a monitoring shack for scientific purposes, but I think you’ll be hard pressed to find people to fulfill the logistics of such an operation.

Like for example in case of overpressure, the pipes under the reactor can break, and you need to fix them. The feed water pumps are actually visitable, The coolant needs to be refilled and delivered. Like if you don't purposefully try to do a meltdown, you have a lot of stuff to do to make this plant run.

    Ah, good ole Hyptek (now known as Broken Hill) Nuclear Power Plant.
    Used to play that game a lot several years ago, and I actually discovered it through Ruben Sim's video.
    Haven't played that in a while, but I've come across this other roblox game about a month ago, Quantum Science Energy Research Facility (QSERF), which I believe is a lot more realistic than Hyptek/Plasma/Broken Hill is. While QSERF's main focus is with a Dark Matter Reactor (DMR), they have other tidbits, like a mobile nuclear power plant called Project Helios, aka Foxtrot 9/F9. F9, I'd dare say is the most complicated thing in the game to operate, it can be fun but also frustrating when you're trying to sync to grid.
    Just wanted to mention QSERF, in case you either feel like doing another reaction type video or even get roblox and play a few of these reactor-type games, I dunno.

    I really wanted to become a nuclear engineer for a really long time until a year ago when every job site I looked at told me it wasn't a good idea because the job demand is on a decline, so I stopped pursuing it then and there. Since you're one and you might have more knowledge than I do, how would I go about getting a job in nuclear engineering if I were to graduate with a bachelors? Being in Texas, its actually easy to decide where I would go to get the degree, Aggies has the biggest program and multiple on campus labs for it. I just don't know where I would go to get a job in that field.

    This was a great video. Ruben sim is actually a great guy but was recently sued by roblox for being “the leader of a cyber mob” that being in quotes because he isn’t doing anything bad when he plays, he just goes on adventures with a cast of wacky characters in game. He now by law cannot play roblox unfortunately but it’s nice to see someone react to his video.

Pleaase!

    Not sure if you already did it, but there are some mods in the game Minecraft which have nuclear reactors I figured I'd just share.
    My particular favorite reactor in a mod would be the Nuclear Fission reactor in Mekanism because it has quite a bit of thermodynamics involved specially if you are switching from water coolent to Sodium.

    I think what this game unintentionally portrays well is the sheer creativity and endless possibility that exists on Roblox through it's userbase. Able to create such great games like these for completely free. Unfortunately the platform has it's fair share of issues that have turned alot more of the mature players away from it. Ruben Sim and his whole incident is proof enough of that.
