Tapping the anvil is a blacksmith thing =) its tradition. It's to keep the devil away from your shop. Never tap an anvil if you aint working on it though.
Craig, As a point of clarity, what size was the parent stock(including length)? I am a blacksmith but not a farrier( I make tools mostly). I want to give this a go as a warm up exercise.
