- Luther Perkins guitar style became synonymous with the Johnny Cash sound and over the next few videos I’m going to break down exactly what he did that made it sound the way it did, not just in a copy me format, but also in a way that you can hopefully reapply. Enjoying watching you play the luther perkins style.
Great lesson.
Appreciate that man, have a good weekend!
Love this lesson. Such great guitar players back then. What would be the best way to create that distinctive slap back sound he made? Would it be the type of guitar played or effect pedals? If so, what would be the settings. Thanks again for this video.
This is awesome mate. Good foundations for any country, bluegrass, rockabilly and psychobilly songwriting.
Cheers mate!! Talk soon, busy week 😎

Yeah, the 50s was a great time because rick n roll was broad and untamed (not a lot of standards) so every picker that took it seriously was trying to invent the whell so to speak and stamp their own brand and style. I picked up on that early on and players like the Rev really showed me that to "stick out" we really need to pay attention to invent as many tricks as we can to invoke as much harmony, melody and rhythm as we can. A bick part of my playin n pickin is mixing cross picking with banjo rolls and of coarse travis picking. Since i hybrid pick a trick i do for banjo roll melodies is travis the bass note, start roll with middle finger, hit second travis note, then ring finger and middle again on third roll. Try different variations of that. The idea is to use different fingers or puck next to each other. Different fingers resonate differently which gives a different tone that makes licks sound more colorful. Good video Adrian!!!
I would like to learn the lead part for Doing my time by Johnny Cash.
The secret to luthers style is the e and f variant of chords.
