Back in the pleistocene era, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we used to have things called "bill folds" that contained things called "paper money." We used it to pay for stuff under 5 bucks, and that was A LOT of stuff. I will be telling Saint Peter about the day my dad freaked out because someone used a credit card to buy a happy meal. Also debit cards and instant credit checks didn't exist.

In my opinion people were cheering because George's rant was very funny in its uncompromising irreverence. It's not about agreeing or disagreeing because it's not about the content. It's about the attitude. It's about the exultation that comes as a consequence of letting all this gratuitous vitriol out. It's liberating. Especially since it's directed at basically innocent targets that have not actually done anything especially (or even remotely) wrong.
It feels good because it subverts any and all politically correct expectations of nice and civil behaviour.
Well said, it's also crazy how George could do this kind of emotional catharsis, yet could take it to the other end of the spectrum with intelligent and insightful comedy that drew on ideas we all had, but subconsciously, and he had a knack for drawing them out into the open...
One must remember the times/years/decades/ in which he lived (1937 - 2008)... The man lived through 3 major wars and what scared him the most was to see "Freedom of Speech" die to "Political Correctness". Consider that in the '60s to the '80s, a person could say whatever he/she wanted to whoever would listen, and if you didn't like it, you walked away... that or you had a fistfight in the back ally and whoever was left standing, was the one in the right. After he hit the age of 55, he stated that he would continue to do his shows as raunchy as he wanted because he was a grumpy old man who didn't give a sh!t.

I had the privilege of getting to see The George Carlin in concert three times over the years. I’m 50 now and I’ve been a fan since I was 14 years old. He definitely taught me a sense of humor that I didn’t have before RIP George! There’s no one as good before or since
Never apologize for laughing and having a sense of humor, we used to be able to make jokes, laugh, and make fun of things in life without people being offended.
While I get some of this, I thoroughly believe that the best humor is punching up, making fun of those with power/money/control, as opposed to punching down against folks who are in communities or groups that are typically discriminated against and have little power.

Lol people absolutely got offended back in the day. Carlin himself got arrested in the 70s for cussng in his shows. The only difference is that everyone has a voice now on the internet so the privileged can't cower behind a wall of money anymore when people take issue with whatever potentially dumbass shit someone says.

Had a history teacher in high school that never assigned homework. We’d be tested the next morning just by answering questions as to whether we learned anything or not. If he wasn’t satisfied that enough of us knew the right answers we’d have go through it all over again. He made sure we paid attention in class lol.
That is a great teacher. Meanwhile, my US history teacher hated me for some reason and no matter how hard I tried in his class, I failed it in the end. I believe he was racist. How am I sure of this? First of all, i was the only Asian in that class. I retook the subject the following year with a different teacher and passed the class with a B+. I didn't do anything different, I did what I normally did. Yet somehow, I got a B+. I barely remembered what I learned in his class (probably because the dude was constantly making my existence a problem. sometimes, i felt like i was invisible).
@@maxkim7937 that sucks. There's nothing worse than going to school and having to learn from somebody that you know doesn't like you. I've seen it and it sucks. Luckily I've never experienced it because I was always very good at keeping my head down.
History is rough anyway because of you don't have a teacher they can bring history to life and making a story, rather than just bunch of dates and places and people it's gonna suck anyway.
I love history. I am a history fanatic. I was going to be a history teacher Once upon a time. History to me come to light because it's a story that you can tell as grand as any story that we see today in the movies.
But it's gotta be learned from somebody that wants it in a way that they want to teach it as a story. Sadly, most teachers don't give a fuck
My homeroom/math teacher used to test us at the end of every week with whatever was taught in that week, and after 4 weeks, the team (we were divided into teams of 4) with the lowest average grade would clean the classroom.
I have a weird distrust of all male teachers. It takes a special kind of weirdo to put In all that work to go make 30k hanging out with teenagers all day.
OMG. Homework rant. I am so there.I remember telling my gr 8 English teacher when he asked why I never did any of the homework assignments "my commitment here ends at 3 PM. If you want me to start doing work somewhere else, you are going to have to pay me for that completely unrelated job.". He got furious & sent me to the Vice-Principal. Which started a loooooong spiral of them pushing against me, me pushing back. Spitefully never doing homework, and them spitefully giving me the bare minimum passing grade, despite As & Bs on tests.

He started out on radio trying to emulate a comedian named Danny Kaye. Danny Kaye was George Carlin’s inspiration.
Steely Dan was a New York City-based Rock group that had its greatest success in the 1970s with hit songs such as “Reeling In The Years”, and “Do It Again”.
Keep in mind that this aired in 2001. It took awhile for the machine to contact your bank and wire money to the store via your card. Cash was still common. The baby carriers are also good because your arms get tired.
They are cheering because its comedy, and when this was made people still had a sense of humor, was not easily offended, and knew it was just humor, not meant to be taken literally.

@@Immortalheart66 I think for alot of us women it just simply isnt funny. As someone who knows people who actually where catcalled by older man as children and worse, it just isnt funny to me, even though I know its supposed to be a joke.
I dont make a big deal out of it and just move on with the video. But not everyone has to find a joke about a serious topic like this funny.

@@Shyress No one asked you to find every joke funny. Likewise however, you can't call out people who do either. There are jokes in most routines from most of the comedians out there that don't hit well, and when that happens, good comedians either make a joke about it bombing or just move on ... the same as most audience members should do. If you were listening, not all guys liked the jokes either, or else there would have been MORE laughter and approval but, I'll bet you, there were lots of women there too that appreciated the same jokes. Let me be clear, George was not being serious ... he was just making a point. Lots of people, including women, think things like this in their heads ... they just don't say it ... which is WHY George did.

George was an Irish kid who grew up on the streets of Spanish Harlem, so if he seems a little rough around the edges to you, his upbringing was part of that, but George was always fearless in speaking truth to power, no matter what the potential fallout might be. Mr. Carlin is sorely missed by everyone he touched throughout his life, the world was a much better place with George in it.

Niche and motif are not the same thing. Niche is easier to explain; it's basically like a bird's nest, a tiny little corner where you fit in best, can be comfortable and flourish. Motif is a word from art, a combination of style and colour that will be the theme for a design. For example, a 'Miami Florida' motif will include pastel colours, palm trees, sandy beaches or images thereof.

Carlin was shown to the uninitiated, not myself, I had seen him, to my high school class on anthropologic history of linguistics. This was 19 years ago. A class on the development on how to utilize language used by George. The uniqueness of it.
R.I.P. George. We keep you with us always. George Carlin is a true Hero and one of humanity's greatest. He was gifted beyond words and put a spotlight directly upon all the SHIT in our society and culture. So that everyone else could SEE it. Those that the spotlight was put on did not like being exposed for who and what they really are. And ultimately Mr Carlin was murdered by those entities. 🙏
Gearge did a ton of cocaine and it damaged his heart. He had a couple of heart attacks before he died

George was the man. he used language and comedy like a virtuoso. I read his book I love his work But i felt that as he got older he became the grumpy old man telling you to get off of his lawn. I loved his work. It helped me to think critically , step outside of what I was fed and form my own views. RIP George, I see you up there telling God where he went wrong.

One thing that’s important to remember with George is that what he says is just good material to him. His delivery sounds serious but he’s not a lot of the time. He doesn’t actually want these people to be killed lol it feels very “judgey” but he is probably guilty of some of these things if not his loved ones
My husband and I are teachers who don't give homework. In our experience, homework is a pain for the kids, the parents, and the teachers. We work with our students for the whole class period, and if work is given, it is done during class-time, when we are there to assist them if they have questions. The only time a kid gets work for home is if they chose themselves not to do an assignment in class during the time provided.

Gold era George Carlin was brutal but, also very smart….. 80’s & 90’s Carlin was fearless & beyond smart (I’ve always liked this bit for being so over the top/silly then he closes the show with a deep social commentary on humanity (very few comedians could pull this off) 👍👍👍

When this George Carlin HBO Special originally debuted, Tucker Carlson was just starting out in his career as a newspaper columnist, and slowly built his reputation nationally on the nationally syndicated news discussion TV program, “The McLaughlin Group”. Since Carlin watched all of the weekend news discussion/interview programs regularly, he knew who Tucker Carlson was way back then, and hated what he had to say.
Some of your reactions to George's humor tells me you have let a very sheltered life. Glad you are also open to others opinions.
My parents were conservative people. My father grew up during The Great Depression. My mother grew up during World War II. Neither of them listened to Rock music. They would never let my older brothers and sisters have a George Carlin album in the house in the 1970s, although my older brother had some Cheech And Chong albums on the sly. I was somewhat familiar with George Carlin’s clean work on network television in the 1970s. When our family got HBO in the late-1970s, that was the first time I watched an uncensored George Carlin comedy concert.

Back in the 90s to early 2000s, credit cards and checks were really only used for large purchases. Everyone else used cash. At least that's how it was here in Texas. The old rotary phones shape is represented by the pinky and thumps just putting a fist to you ear could mean anything, I don't know how we told everyone about our phone calls from the 20s especially it was hard to talk to people if you wasn't in front of them but it required 2 hands and and there was no numbers on the phone to call the only 3 people you knew had a phone

Most teachers leave a lot of time during class for the student to finish their assignments. I knew lots of kids who never had homework because they always finished it in class. I ALWAYS had homework because I was just a bad student and spent all day talking to my friends and daydreaming. I was smart enough and fair-minded enough to not blame my teachers for it. 😂

A reasonable amount of homework is necessary to reinforce what is being taught.
I did my best never to bring home homework because I had to walk 2 miles and didn't want to carry 5 textbooks in my shoulder bag. :) So I usually completed Period 1 homework during Period 2, etc.
When I was in school if I couldn’t do it in school it probably wouldn’t get done. I found out in second grade that the teacher couldn’t make me do anything I didn’t want to. If you are willing to accept the results there is no way to make you. Move forward and my oldest kids went to school under the belief that if you didn’t have at least two hours of homework you weren’t studying enough. By the time my youngest was in high school the philosophy was that if you had to take home schoolwork the teacher was somehow failing to teach you. It changes about every ten years.

As a teacher, I mostly agree with your take. I do think homework helps as it gives them practice. So, I do give homework, but I try to keep it fairly simple and not too time consuming. They have a bunch of other classes and have life outside of school. So, I’ll never understand my fellow teachers who give hours of homework every night. It’s ridiculous. But some modest homework, for practice and to make sure they don’t forget… that’s fine.
My favorite method was in junior high, the teacher would give homework, but like you said, it would be for practice and would be worth extra credit on tests, instead of being up to 25% of the final grade (Like many of my junior and high school classes)...so if you knew you weren't going to do well on the test, you could do the homework to get some extra leeway and doing the work would help you on the test in-and-of itself...ten points out of one hundred seemed about right, you get one free letter for showing that you can do the work, even if you can't recall it at a moment's notice...
I was a mostly straight A-B student in high school. For 2 out of the 4 years. I ditched a giant portion of my sophomore year, and spent most of my senior year high as a kite. But I can tell you that most of what we were taught was filler, just a reason to keep us there for 6-8 hours. They could've given us everything we needed in 4 hours a day, and used the rest of time for actual life skills/work experience.
Imagine the whole standup goes over an hour I think and to remember all that at his age even later was insane. I can barely remember the lyrics to a song.

Hi Britt- always enjoy your thoughtful reactions. You got me thinking about the purpose of homework. I had a couple of ideas, and did a quick search on google to see if I am in the ballpark... I'm speaking as someone who is not a parent, but did my share of homework so take with a grain of salt... from my perspective the benefit is to teach the child study habits, self-discipline, and being able to solve problems independently. I'm not sure at what age it becomes a real benefit. If I did have children, I would want them to be self-reliant and not depend on a teacher to be able to figure things out...
Kids today don’t have social skills because they Google their homework, talk to a screen, and have parents to busy to teach them life skills.

27:30 Anyone who was around in the late 80's and early 90's may remember what it was like to use a credit card back in the day before digital record keeping...there was this handheld copy machine that used carbon paper forms that the cashier had to fill out, then take an imprint of the credit card...it took far longer than it does today where you just slide the card...but as a lil' anecdote, I always found something fun about using the machine...it had a flat metal bar on top that was used to press the credit card image into the carbon paper by sliding it from one side of the machine to the other...and to me it always felt like cocking a shotgun...
we used that gesture to signal the phone because we’re signaling the phone not the holding of the phone

Glad I wasn't the only person who was anti homework in school.
I always felt like, "If I can get A's on all your tests, why am I doing work at home?"
Homework should be extra credit for the kids that are struggling to absorb the material, and it should be paired with one on one time with the teacher to cover those gaps.
Granted, I know that's a big ask, with overcrowded classrooms, and underpaid teachers, unfortunately...
school is teaching kids how to become adults. the time they spend in school teach them how to function at workplace, follow rules, do your job. homework teaches responsibility. to use your example, "if i can get A's on all the tests"... if that is true then homework should not take much of your time. if you are trully that smart and refuse doing homework then you are giving to your laziness where as doing your homework even if you think its pointless as you already know it all given your "A's" then that teaches you responsibility, time managment and prepares you for adult life as adult life is full of things we dont like but have to deal with on every day like doing your taxes, saving money etc.
school is flawed, i agree. there should be classes that should teach kids better how to be adults, and there are so many pointless classes that are useless today that is still part of curiculum cause it was important hundreds of years ago... but thats apples and oranges. homework is important and parents that argue against it are the same parents that raise spoiled children that never gets prepared for life and needs to be held and carried through life forever, ending up living with their parents in their forties etc.
I always thought they should teach you how to do your taxes as well instead of the algebra stuff that you will never do again.
@@AngelinaSkye1695 totally agreed. problem with school system is that it still put way too much value in things that was nessecity hundreds of years ago, like who needs algebra today when he was computers and AI replacing the need for algebra. as for maths, i understand nessecity for basics like counting, simple addition and subtraction, multiplication and dividing, but quadratic equations is idiotic, we have calculators for that and every phone has those. instead of focusing on irrelevant things from history, prepare kids for future...
Homework is the system's way of "training" children to be corporate robots who are expected to treat their careers as the most important part of their lives. I advocate wholeheartedly for homeschooling... the insanity going on in the public school system is horrifying these days. I'm just thankful that my kids are all grown so they wouldn't be afflicted with the garbage that they're pushing in schools now. 🙏🏼

my mum in the 80s and 90s would take photos of the family in funny or themed scenes and send them to the family so they could see them as a way to see how much we had grown etc as her family mostly lived 2000knm away, we would often go years without seeing them....
My dad would have loved the teachers you're describing. He thought when I was in junior high that for every hour I spent in class, I should spend 3 hours studying. With him. At the table. Being yelled at for being better at English and History than Math. As you would expect, I got zero sleep, I have chronic pain, friendless and I'm unemployed at 41 years old. There's a part of me who wants to warn kids about this, but I'll be honest. After all the abuse, there's definitely a part of me that DOES want to make it harder for younger people. My sister is a teacher and she takes it seriously, and while I see the logic and humanity in what she tries to do, it's hard to care. Maybe I'm just like George. I'm starting to revel in other people's misfortune. I don't know whether to hate kids because they're going to have a better life than me or sympathize with them because thanks to COVID and some really stupid, selfish decisions by politicians on behalf of corporate interests over the last 50 years, they might not. In any case, if I get one more of those disgusting little trolls with one finger in their nose and another down their pants pulling one hand out of a hole to point at me because I'm physically disabled, they might have to experience some of what I went through as a kid. 🤣

I hear your frustration. I really do. I was born with Cerebral Palsy, was terribly bullied at school, was physically and mentally abused as a child, went to college, worked hard for my degree, and my career life has not turned out to be *anything* like what I worked for in college. Still, I refuse to give in to bitterness. It's not easy, but bitterness is corrosive. I want others to succeed, even as I struggle.

For kids life is very fast pace.
I afree that you have to learn patience eventually but learning slowly is the most deadly thing for a childs curiosity.
They learn insanely fast so you woud be alot better of if you catch their attention once a day and really fit alot of knowledge in that short time as possible.
Homework should be something other than writing short mindless sentences for" practice".
I firmly belive that if you confront small children with physics you can spark their curiosity and feed them highly complex information very early without it ever getting boring as long as you are being enthusiastic in your way of delivering that information.
Kids aren't doumb idiots, they just havent been told anything yet but they have damn near perfect intuition and are insanely fast at learning new things.

I agree! I wish they wouldn't waste so much time in elementary school boring kids with basics (which are necessary,) but introducing them to bigger concepts. Teach them spelling, addition, and manners, sure. But don't be afraid to show them equations, microscopes, poetry, scientific theory, geography, physiology, and languages. Expand their universe, and slide the basics into what really interests them. Tell them about the object discovered by NASA and ask them to guess what it is. (Which is what scientists are doing now.)
I also love the idea of kids taking English/Language Arts only until they pass a proficiency test given every year. Once you're proficient, that class disappears, and you can take another language, Writing, Book Club, Shakespeare, or other English related elective. These classes wouldn't be sorted by age, but by ability. Reading and writing then get folded into other classes, so their papers can be graded for writing proficiency, as well as history, science, etc. Wasting so much time on reading/writing is a sure way to kill any love of it.

I used to not want children up until a couple years ago but now i feel more mature and i would love to make a family just so i can try and be a positive influece on my child.
@@Skurian_krotesk Having kids is a wild ride. I compare it to listening to music on a stereo or sound system. Before kids, it's like living with the music set at a comfortable level all the time. Having kids is like cranking the knob, and letting someone play with it so you never know what it's going to do. Love, pain, joy, worry, pride, frustration, and selflessness are all magnified more than you can imagine.
It's hard, but you'll grow, and learn so much about yourself. I think it's great that you're conscientious enough to seriously consider whether it's for your or not. If/when you have a family, you're more likely to have your eyes open, and be ready--though no one is ever really ready for kids.
It goes back to the time it was recorded. Whipping out a credit card slowed down the entire process. I worked behind a register most of my adult life. And you could be zippin' through cash orders at 10 secs a piece or less, then someone turns up with a credit card, and everything grinds to a halt. Not so much the case anymore, but back then, it was still a major pain for everyone else in line.
High school graduates cannot tell the time on a round clock. They cannot find their own state on a map of the country. wow
But let me tell you about my daughters second day in Kindergarten.
We had smiles on our faces and gently woke her up and when she opened her eyes we said, It's time to get up and go to school." She looked a bit surprised and said, "I already went to school."
We were surprised at how cute and naive she was. In my mind I was thinking "Prepare yourself for a terrible shock"
