Naming something is hugely powerful. Therapists know this, "name it to tame it." When you comfort an upset kid, saying in your own wordsor repeating back to them what happened to make them upset calms thems incredibly well. Giving their experience a name gives them confidence to navigate the world.
When you have an unknown illness it's an immediate relief to find it has a name. Names help the world become manageable.

Happens a lot with people who procrastinate with their goal setting. Choosing to keep things murky rather than defining them concretely allows them to evade what they know they should be striving towards. It's an easy cop out. You can easily convince yourself out of doing something if the plans are not explicitly outlined.

The problem became clear to me years ago when I was confronted with the fact that I knew something, but didn’t know it consciously and could only react instinctively.
But when I had formulated it in words, I was able to consciously work with it and that makes a huge difference.
If things don’t have names, or something isn’t formulated in words, then you just can’t grasp it.

I find this to be true in writing as well. I've always been taught to be specific when writing, like rather than writing "a tree," write, "a maple," rather than "the car," write, "the black sedan," rather than "a pungent smell," write, "smelled like old gym socks," things like that. It may seem small and unnecessary at first, but once you do the picture you're trying to paint become so much clearer, vivid and real.
As well as I know this concept I'm still amazed at how much more real something becomes once it's put into words, aka, named.

One was for the Cat, the other was for the Snake, and the other was for the Bird. When one of these monkeys would see it and call it out, it was a call for them to move to whatever defensive position that would be suited against these predators. Not only did the monkeys knew this language, but it was said that other animals also listened and followed the call.

I have actually thought for a while now that people get too caught up in language and don’t spend enough time on the concepts. Sometimes you don’t have words for something, but the concept is in your brain so you need to gather up words to express your idea. The concept comes first, then you put it into words and when you communicate it people may feel as though a truth they had a concept of (but not words for) has been put into focus and clarified. Language can effect your thinking for sure, but language doesn’t exist without the core concept being in your brain in the first place.
Unfortunately, since we are so social, we often make the mistake of thinking that people who can’t communicate their ideas are dumb. Sometimes that’s true, but other times it may be that they have a lot of concepts in their head that don’t have words yet. This means most people would have trouble communicating the concept because it’s likely a rare concept and it might even be new concept to the world. So, I think it’s always good to try to help people communicate their ideas in this situation so we can both understand the concept and communicate it afterwards.
Other times, you don’t need language to communicate. Sometimes you can tell a story to someone and say “and that felt nice, you know?” And because the person can relate to what your saying, they may understand exactly what you mean without further communication. The concept is then grasped without an over analysis of what’s going on.

Man, this is a long comment, lol. But I love thinking about God. And science also. This clip is very interesting. The interconnectedness of all things - until you name them - then we can categorize and place them in structures. How true. I was taught that naming a thing gives you power over it. I believe this. It is in attributing glory or strength to that thing which gives ‘the thing itself’ power over us. But naming it gives power over it.
Naming the unknown brings us a sense of relief. The uneasiness of an intermingled mass of ‘things’ which we don’t know what is harmful to us or isn’t harmful in all that mess, subsides when we begin the separation into distinct objects. At least, this is true for the objects that we are capable of perceiving - who knows what remains which we are unable to perceive. It takes a greater skill of discernment - I would say intellectually, spiritually and intuitively - to begin giving shape to what is impercievable by the human eye.
We don’t see a photon either. It is imperceptible. But we can feel a photon, if there are enough of them. And they can rip the tissues of the eye apart, without us being able to perceive one photon passing through to our brain. We feel the hurtful effects of the process (of looking into the sun), but we can’t see what’s happening.
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
There are other realms, not just the pragmatic conglomeration of the things we perceive - what we can touch or understand with our five senses. One of these realms is where the creation of these objects form. The realm of Words, specifically. (How much more the realm of the Word Himself, wow, too much here to begin!)
Words are not perceivable and they are the most powerful weapons we as human beings have. We just don’t understand that. In most cases, I would say, I’m thankful most don’t~
Can you imagine if God came to you and said, ‘I will not let one word you speak fall to the ground.” What would you do? You have said you pray before and after every word you speak. Not one word will fall to the ground, every word will come true - how much destruction do you think might then be in your wake?
“And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and there did not fall one of his words to the ground.” 1 Samuel 3.19
For the prophet, there is no such thing as an idle word.
God’s word is the most powerful: “…so shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55.11
And let me add here that the Word of God (biblical text) is described as a two-edged sword, able to discern between the spirit and the soul, the bone and the marrow. This is a staggering amount of power…
Now, Samuel was not a ‘one-off’ but a type, just like Adam. Which means that if we grow in the word and the Spirit of God is upon us, we too have the same power in our words. But it takes something most people are unwilling to work for: God’s trust in you. This doesn’t come to pass outside of pure dedication to God alone and nothing else. Hence, why this rarely happens at all in the world. At least, that anyone can see…those who are cloaked by God are imperceivable by those who know Him not.
But that leaves us with a huge intertangled blob of words….what power is behind the evil that is spoken which also comes to pass? This has something to do with that ‘attributing glory or power to an object’ that I mentioned. ‘Nothing shall by any means hurt or harm you. I give you all power to tread upon serpents.” The devil has zero chance against God’s people. Oh he wins battles but this epic war is not two equally formidable foes fighting one another, no, the devil is a defeated foe - Christ stripped Him of all his power when He rose from the dead (abyss). Do you think He is going to leave us down there? Of course not. We rise with Him if He is in us, and we are in Him - oh that glorious intermingled connectedness is a beautiful thing here!
Side note: what is happening in the world today isn’t God against Satan. That happened already, before the creation of man - and God made an imprint of the devil’s backside in the earth, as quick as lightening. Nothing is formidable to God. The very act of raising Christ from the dead was described as merely ‘rolling up one shirt sleeve to bear His forearm’! Ha! (Isaiah 52.10). No, what we are seeing playing out now in the world is the epic battle of the Church against Satan. ‘Destined for the Throne’ explains this beautifully.
It’s all about perception though, isn’t it.
Surely if we perceive ourselves to have to fight our own battle to raise ourselves from hell, well then, we stay right there, burning. I for one grabbed His coattail on the way up, and rose with Him:) Colossians 2:12 and again Romans 6:4
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” It’s symbolic, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t truth.
Christ’s resurrection then is a type, a first fruits of God’s promise to all His people that we too shall escape death and rise from the grave. People saw this, there were witnesses, but yet it's inconceivable. Funny how the tables turned there...
“If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man…”. (That being Christ, the second Adam)
    1 Corth 15.19-21
Geez, I'm all over the place, lol. That was fun. But I could go on forever, and it’s Sunday :)

if indeed it is true that photons arent emmitted unless theyres something to catch it, its true because of the dual nature of photons: both particle and wave. without something to strike it behaves as a wave and fills a space without individual parts, with something to strike, and therfor affecting a change on something, it behaves as a particle and then so is a particle. Logically then, it is a wave if you arent there, and a particle if you are, and was always that way.

This reminds me a whole lot of the weirdness surrounding quantum physics. It is so strange to think that the simple act of observing a phenomenon has an effect on that phenomenon, at least at the quantum-physical level. Also, since quantum physics and Newtonian physics aren't truly separable, this act of observation may have grander affects then we can now realize.

    • @tuseroni6085
      @tuseroni6085 2 года назад

i would like to point out that when it comes to quantum physics "observing" means "hitting it with something" and some of the weirdness goes away when you make that replacement. "hitting a thing changes how that thing acts" is less weird than "observing a thing changes how that thing acts"
so the classic example would be the dual slit experiment, if you want to know which slit the electron, or similar quantum object, is traveling through you need to put something that will hit it and tell you which one it went through, a detector of some sort.
the questions tend to be about WHY it happens in the way it does, why it forms a waveform when not being hit with things but doesn't when it is, this gets you into the Copenhagen interpretation vs the many world hypothesis and the nature of the waveform.

I would say naming things is an often necessary outcome of the cutting-out process (which makes it an object of the mind) that makes them real, not the other way around. I think the word "naming" is not that precise because it has that `developed speakable language` association and the process of cutting something out of the one is something that happens way before the language as we know it (as its far developed into the world). The process we talk about would be the cornerstone of the idea of language. The representations the mind needs to communicate to itself or maybe more precise: representaions the consciousness needs to communicate to the mind, something like that and although that is by definition language and therefor in some sense you can call it "naming" , its just not that clear to associate exactly what it is by calling it language or naming. Thats a necessary destinction because there are things that are in some way identifiable and with which the mind can work but they are not nameable, at least not without a lot of additional processes.

  • @Taldaran
    @Taldaran 2 года назад

I think I get the reference of John Wheeler in this talk. So if there was not entanglement on a universal level, all matter would be static. No movement, no expression of energy or potential. The bible refers to it as formless, empty and dark (void), but one could argue that it was completely full on many levels but without expression, timeless and inert. That photon from a star is, and always has been tied to your eye and your eyes are also attracted to that expressed photon. It is actually drawing you towards it, but you weigh more and are being tied down to earth and all of the other things on this planet (including yourself) that cumulatively add mass and holds us here.
Everything everywhere is being anchored by lines of forces like a multidimensional solid tapestry, but seemingly fluid sliding and passing around and through, but what we perceive as empty or solid may be a matter of size and scale.

The idea with the photon might be able to be explained with relativity and quantum mechanics. According to the mathematics, as you approach the speed of light time stops and distance becomes null. This is what the mathematics describing light approaches (think limits in calculus). Keep in mind that the math we use to describe this physics might break down at this point and I believe we don’t actually have experiments to provide evidence that a photon experiences no time, it is simply what is suggested by the limits of the mathematics in relativity.
But, let’s say the mathematical representation is accurate at describing reality at its limits. In that case the photon is experiencing its whole journey at once, without space or time. We add in quantum mechanics, where the photon is in a superposition of states until observed. The observation is typically an interaction of some kind, it could interact with a tree leaf or it could interact with your eye, or it could interact with a detector in a lab. The photon being observed forces it into a state (these states typically describing the photons polarization), and in that way, it is defined from being a mix of polarizations to a distinct polarization, and so the photon (as we know it and experience it) seems to be defined in that moment. Before interaction, the photon is on its own and in a state we’ll never fully understand because we view the world through interactions while the photon can be in a state where it has no interactions that have occurred with it yet (although we can try to construct its wave equation and solve schrodinger’s equation to get an idea).
I don’t know what John wheelers take on it is, but I can see how this conclusion could be reached by combining the two ideas above.

Very good Jordan, John Wheeler was probably one of the first scientist that penned the idea that the universe probably is just data, years of studying quantum mechanics has convinced me that the universe probably is a virtual reality concept that streams information upon us on demand, that means that reality is subjectively perceived from microsecond to microsecond.
Us would be "individuated consciousness beings" at the fundamental level, human life in this game of Gaia is just an consciousness trainer, effectively created to secure spiritual evolution and growth from this feedback loop of cause and effect....that we call life!

It may be that we are just passing thoughts in the mind of God. When I was young, I used to wonder if the Cosmos was God's brain, and also wondered if physics was the language in which God's thoughts occurred. I don't subscribe to that line of thinking any longer, but the ideas left an impression that colors my beliefs still.

    • @nicholaslash8760
      @nicholaslash8760 2 года назад +1

It could mean a few different things. To me it is the start of much hypocrisy. Page one of the bible states, god spoke everything into existence. 2 sentences later it says you are made in that image. Meaning? Control schools and you control the language and thus the reality..
Page one it says everything was supposed to eat of the trees and vegetation as their meat.
Page four has cain and abel story. You know, where supposedly lord god chose to have fat etc as a burnt offerin instea def the fruit veggie offerin from cain. That story contradicts page one of the bible. Unless you think god on page one went from being a vegetarian to a blood loving meat eat eater on page 4.
To me, this all is a puzzle. If we try to only look at it one way it wont make sense. You have to try and look from multiple sides to gain better insight on these things. It is easy to think everything is evil. But more than likely this is about learning

What interests me though is the deeper underlying metaphysical aspect.. Names, numbers, money, science, religion are useful so long as we treat them as the conventional symbols that they are. They allow us to make practical arrangements and attempt to make sense of a vast chaotic real world. The separate feeling centre of action and supposed free will;ego(felt as a certain sensation somewhere in the skull) is likewise sort of a symbol, an illusion: of memory and language. IT DOESN'T EXIST, either to do anything or to be subject to nature's whims of change.
The real world escapes all such concepts, symbols and definitions. In truth, the real world cannot be known. It can't be grasped and fixed(words are fixed eg; the word banana never changes but a real banana goes bad with time)for it is ever changing, ever morphing. We are not separate observers of this real world..we are intrinsic 'parts' of it, firmly attached to it as a tree is to the ground.
All such attempts of fixing are ultimately futile. As Alan Watts paradoxically puts it, "it's like fire trying to burn itself or eyes trying to see themselves."
In another sense, however, we do know reality..we know it in immediate experience which we are not separate from. Some of this may sound confusing and nonsensical but trust me, with time and digging things begin to click...it will be the surprise of your life, in the best way possible way. I truly believe it's the..'seek ye the Kingdom of God first and everything else shall follow.'
It allows us to use these symbols artfully. We aren't fooled by them. We realise they're just another part of reality, what is. YOU'RE IT. Knowing that you don't know and indeed, that you can't know is the highest act of faith. It is implicit in all religions, though most have been corrupted.

One of the few academics with a modicum of sanity. I would say also intelligence because knowing facts alone does not indicate intelligence. It is how one applies those facts to the most beneficial purposes. Sadly many so called experts may know a lot in their narrow perviews of specialty but how they apply that knowledge often results in destructive outcomes. This is indicative of a lack of understanding. Be the ignorance willful du to a malevolence and self-interest or be it that they are a storehouse of information but lacking the capacity to utilize that information effectively as a result of a irreparably broken education system. The fact remains many people claim to know things but those who genuinely understand what they know beyond the surface repetition are few indeed

Recently I watched a near death experience. The Dr Eben Alexander a neurosurgeon who had a bacterial meningitis and was put into a induced coma it was very interesting as the part of his brain that was considered to be responsible for our dreams was the main part of where the meningitis had infected and he was considered brain dead with not a good prognosis.
He,s description of heaven and the journey he went on before being in a telepathic communication with a angelic being was incredible he talked about no such thing as time but something he calls deep time and everything is now. He was a completely different person before his near death experience now he knows we are all dearly loved and we will return to heaven we are here to learn many things I hope someone reading this might look him up as deep time is always our right time and what professor Peterson was expressing about the the light particle coming from the sun precisely explains deep timing, or as I like to believe is God's automatic timing.

What about the reverse opposite mentality. When people name things in the hopes of speaking it into reality? Like the human people that are claiming to be a dinosaur.

    • @ronjones1414
      @ronjones1414 2 года назад

The difference there is that the object (dinosaur, ) has already been named and exists. Dr. Peterson is speaking more along the lines of when a human identifies a thing as something and refines it by assigning a name. Think Newton's apple. To me, a huge part of this is being able to prove repeatedly that the thing exists and has an unchanging set of identified properties. A homo sapien has many properties NOT in common with dinosaurs, therefore a homo sapien is not a dinosaur.

Hmyeah, the moment we get to quantum physics etc, things get weird. I'd rather just say that "I don't think we've figured that out yet", than accept most of the theories coming out of that field, that seem completely counter-intuitive (and counter "reality at our scale", in a sense). Let the quantum physicists argue over whether reality exists or whether it's a simulation, while we live in it. It seems to me you can explain pretty much everything at our scale without ideas akin to space magic or dreamt universes, etc. Seems to me Adam naming things is just making them known to Adam as well as discussable.

There is naming, and there is defining. These two concepts are not the same. The right to name was given unto man by God. God already gave definition to all things that we are allowed to give name. In our knowledge we took naming as giving definition. This definition is in denial that all had already been defined by God.
The fact that all these things are before you is proof enough. Yet it has to be believed.
For those who give definition to things, is not the deprivation of drawing nearer to God, but a larger frame of context for understanding the impossibility of existing outside the undefinable "Standard" that is God's handiwork alone.

Eastern religion teaches to calm the mind and if done right the person eventually thinks in shapes and observation and not words. Explaining thing in linear language is very crude. Naming things doesn't explain it. Try to put the concept of God into words. U can't. Can u really explain in words a beautiful sunset. Nope. U can try but ul never fully be able to explain the beauty. Ur problem is a physicist can't explain what a daoist or Hinduist can. But ur still believing in a all knowing all loving diety u can't see or conceive. Then u can understand naming things isn't important as body in space in time operates with more than their mouth. U hear u breath u feel u have sensors all over your body to help u observe and navigate the outer world

God created a scientist and a farmer then a help-mate.
Naming the animals is a basic scientific method called Taxonomy.
The Genesis Enigma: The opening page of Genesis is scientifically accurate but was written long before the science was known. How did the writer of this page come to write the creation account? . . .
I must admit, rather nervously as a scientist averse to entertaining such an idea, that the evidence that the writer of the opening page of the Bible was divinely inspired is strong. I have never before encountered such powerful, impartial evidence that the Bible is the product of divine inspiration".
-Andrew Parker (Research Director at Natural History Museum in London, Evolutionary Biologist)
Sequence of Genesis-Sequence of science pointed out by many, namely by people who set little store on the factual accuracy of the biblical record of creation. Edwyn Bevan, English Philosopher and Historian (1870-1943) Wrote in an essay titled: "The religious value of myths in the old testament":
"Stages which the earth comes to be what it is cannot indeed be precisely fitted to the account which modern science would give of the process, in principle they seem to anticipate modern scientific account by a remarkable flash of inspiration, which a christian may also call inspiration. We should see it first in a condition of no land distinguishable from water, only dim light from an invisible sun through thick volumes of enveloping cloud. Later moment, globe dried, land would have appeared, at a later moment low forms of life, animal and vegetable, would have begun, a later process the cloud mazes become so thin and broken. . We should see the earth with its present fauna and flora, and the final product of animal evolution, Man".
German Jewish Philosopher Leo Strauss(1899-1973) said of these verses: "The vegetative world was created on the third day and the sun on the fourth day. That is the most massive difficulty of the account given in the first chapter of the Bible".
The word "day" makes no obvious sense in the absence of the sun and the earths rotation relative to it. Origen asked a reasonable question: "If the sun is not yet there, how are we to conceive of the first three days with their "evenings and mornings"?
I don't believe God was/is concerned with us understanding exactly how He does things.
1225, Robert Grosseteste "Proceedings of the royal society, "A medieval multiverse" the universe created in a big-bang like explosion and subsequent condensation. Postulating fundamental coupling of light and matter giving rise to the material body of the entire cosmos. Expansion arrested when matter reaches minimum density, subsequent emission of light from outer region leads to compression and rarefaction of inner bodily mass so as to create nine celestial spheres, with an imperfect residual core". .
The author would not have had the tools for this. . .
Nearly eight centuries later this big bang was proposed by Astrophysicist Georges Lemaître in the standard model with which we are familiar today.
Jewish Polymath, Hebrew Scholar, Scientist, Physician: Leon Kass wrote an impressive book called "The beginning of wisdom: reading genesis"
Asking a fascinating question in regards to Sun; Day 4, Vegetation; Day 3, "What if these incongruities should not be rationalized away? Possibly intentionally arranged incongruously, out of the expected order? Intending on challenging or atleast correcting certain aspects of our naive, untutored perception of our world, a perception that relies mainly on sight and that tacitly holds that seeing is believing?"
The text therefore functions as a protest or polemic against idolatry, though not its primary purpose. Hardly likely to be the whole story of day 3 and day 4.
Modern people may find it hard to imagine the shock in Abraham's time of deciding the moon worshipped in Haran was just a 'lamp'.
Imagine the shock of the Egyptians when Ra, the chief sun god turns out also to be a mere lamp created on day 4 for human convenience!
We all must face the fact that this opening chapter of Genesis is indeed complex and sophisticated leaving us all open to multiple interpretations.
The fact that Jewish commentators, early church fathers, and all other serious interpreters have difficulties with the text should give us comfort and make us more humble about our own certainties. .
The central message is that the God of the Eternal/Material realms created sustained material life and did just that. Some views have been contrived to make scripture subservient to science, since no one could have arrived at these sophisticated interpretations in the ancient world.
Copernicus, Rheticus, Kepler were not claiming that the Bible taught the motion of the earth, but that the motion of the earth was consistent with Biblical teaching

words have neither power nor magic to them. They make a statement about the one who speaks them, not about the things they describe. Hence presumably why god asked Adam to describe things.
