Because IAS officers don't manage a district from exam point of view, they need information to form their own opinions rather than pre-packaged analysis. Same with everything really, should we read My Experiments With Truth or The Annihilation of Caste or 1984 by ourselves and form our own opinions or adopt the opinions from a youtube summary of those books?

    • @ShivaniB25

@@Seeker_of_F1r3 it depends on what is your purpose of reading those books? If you are reading them as novels sure I would read them cover to cover as they are supposed to be...bt if I want to use them to enrich my answers and essays I would definitely prefer reading certain quotes or gists of them...an ias officer gets a 3 year training on how to manage a district but first we need to be competent enough to reach there.. this exam as is is extremely tough I am just trying to not make my preparation and my life more complicated!

I dont know how they keep suggesting us to read newspapers daily when in reality to do so effectively we first need to have proper conceptual clarity of the static portion. Like for example if there's a news about Public interest Litigation, a beginner cannot just cram it up without knowing what is PIL and how it came into being, its scope, purposes, etc. which he/she will only after studying GS 2. Newspaper reading is not the best way for preparing current affairs for starters.

Newspaper reading is very important but the choice of the newspaper really matters. Better to avoid The Hindu newspaper. The Hindu newspaper is one-sided and partial. Also, it furthers the "Leftist" narrative which is unpragmatic considering the present political scenario. Many toppers suggested reading the Indian Express (the old one, not the NIE) as it gives both left and right narrative of each and every issue which is good for proper analysis and comprehension.

Yes, there are distinct opinions about making notes, some says we should make notes, some says its not necessary, you can rely on monthly magazine. But in the end we have to revise current affairs and one should follow that strategy of note-making which is best suited for him.
I personally don't like to make notes, because it is time consuming. I'd rather read the newspaper and revise it from monthly magazines for the main exam.

All I'm gonna say, the title doesn't justify the content of the video!!! Newspaper reading is a personal choice, both agreed but i guess the interviewer asked quite leading questions rather than a comprehensive one! Also, read whatever you want, just keep the end in mind and how you gonna enhance your typical answer with whatever extra reading!!! A lot of the same officers might have read novels by major people in distinguished fields and might have used those insights instead of news editorials. Toppers can't share it "all" afterall they are only human and only so much can be relevant to a mass of people. Some even go to pilgrimage between two attempts, dont know if they should remember to mention that too, or if they ever got a back in their graduation or if they read sports from newspapers or just watched it on tv...like, for real...use common sense guys!!!
