Why did East German Soldiers Goose Step at a WAR Memorial?

  • This is a short history video on why East German soldiers goose stepped at a war memorial, which was dedicated to the people who lost their lives from "Fascism and Militarism."
    A Prussian style military ritual complete with German soldiers goose stepping in front a war memorial dedicated to the countless people who perished as a result of militarism. Is this the best example of irony?

    Good explanation! Even the GDR was a Regime it understood the difference between military prussian tradition and the political interpretation about the Goostep. It´s not political to interpret it´s just a type of marching what the Wehrmacht didn´t invent... they took it from the Reichswehr and the Reichswehr from the Kaiserreich.

    Do Germans view NVA Neue Wache as German today? Or do they view it more of a Communist re-invention of the old tradition?
    AFAIK, there's been no Neue Wache since 1990.
    Also, at least visually and aesthetically NVA looked more German than BW. I can't say anything about their combat capability - it's never been put to test. Neither BW nor NVA claimed to be descendants of the Wehrmacht - the last truly combat capable German army.
    NB. In modern day Russia many people interested in East German military share a sense of guilt for "betraying" East Germany and NVA as USSR's most loyal ally (which I personally doubt). You can read their comments.

    This type of goose step was not a Prussian tradition, it is a Soviet (and nowadays Russian) style - Prussian goose step looks different....

    • @MaximusandHistory
      @MaximusandHistory  6 месяцев назад +7

      Sorry, but this is not true. This goose step is Prussian and not "Soviet" as you claim.
      I have the original NVA drill manual from 1957 in my possession. The manual is an updated version of the 1906 Prussian drill manual with only some Soviet elements. The goose step is directly based on the Prussian model.
      First and foremost, in Russian, we officially call the goose step "Строевой шаг" (Lit. "Drill Step") and it was directly borrowed from Prussia. However, it is only used for training and drill exercises, and was never used on parade! The only other exception for using this step is when a military unit carries out the regimental banner during a ceremony, that's it.
      The formal marching step of the Soviet and later Russian Army is called "Походный шаг" (Lit. Marching Step). The "Marching Step" is the one you see on Russian military parades, and it's not considered goose stepping because the height of the step is too low to be classified as such. (It's less than 15cm off the ground).
      Lastly, the Russian Drill Step is much slower than the German one. The NVA continued to use the Prussian tempo of 114 steps per minute, while Russian drill regulations establish the Drill Step (Goose Step) at 75 steps per minute, which is significantly slower than the one used by the NVA.

    • @heimdalshorn
      @heimdalshorn 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@MaximusandHistory ...sorry, you are wrong. The original Prussian "goose step" (aka "Stechschritt") is not in the way as practised by the NVA. It was more like the aktuell Russian style parade step. The goose step of the 5 changing guards in your video is exately the Soviet/Russian Drill step-model (to an almost 90 degree angel), there was nothing similar in any German military before. The Prussians did not lift the leg as far as the NVA did. I have seen the NVA parading many times, also "life", and I know the manuals as well and I know tons of historical photos and historical films showing Prussians on parade and at ceremonies. The parade step (not the "drill step" - this was Soviet-style) of the NVA was in the same tempo as the Prussians, but with much higher legs. If you want to make a comparison, then the NVA parade step is more "Wehrmacht-Style" then "Prussian-Style" - and yes, there is a significant difference.....

      @@heimdalshorn The cognitive dissonance is kicking in! :D
      Also, why do you keep liking your own comment? LOL.
      Again, this is not true! You have no idea what you're talking about. The 90 degree angle goose step is unofficially "stechschritt" and was used by the Wehrmacht!
      If you open the drill regulations of the Wehrmacht, the Stechschritt is actually called the "Parademarsch" and is executed at a 90 degree angle!
      There are two different types of goose step:
      Paradeschritt / Exerziermarsch (Parade Step) = 45 degree angle
      Stechschritt / Parademarsch (Piercing Step) = 90 degree angle
      The Stechschritt / Parademarsch is only used at the changing of the guard, which is correctly done by the NVA!
      Look here: 2.bp.blogspot.com/-IFhP1kEHnpI/UmrXgo07OCI/AAAAAAAAALw/8I1YWAnLc2c/s1600/tumblr_m637wxSJip1rxux3lo1_1280.jpg

      @@MaximusandHistoryStechschritt was never used by the Prussians and you put a link to the photo of Wermacht (Luftwaffe) which butchered Prussian tradition. Bundeswehr still continues the tradition with small changes so that it doesn't hurt the soldiers like slowing down the drill.
      The traditions that Bundeswehr has is Prussian just like Reichsheer. NVA doesn't have Prussian tradition it is mostly Russian like the hand swinging and the diffrence between the Russian and the NVA changing of the guard is small.
