    Rhaenyra in the books styles her hair typically in a long braid similar to Queen Visenya, sister wife to Aegon the Conqueror. Queen Visenya is described as having her hair braided or bound up in rings. Queen Visenya is a role model of Rhaenyra. In the show, she wanted Aemma to name her sibling in the first episode of season 1 Visenya if it was a girl. Rhanyra also names her stillborn girl in the season 1 finale Visenya after the Queen. Rhaenyra is also seen reading a passage about Visenya earlier this season in the episode Regent.

      Hi Zando, I get the connection to Visenya but not to Dany.

    • @Zando91

      @@Costume_CO the connection to Daenerys’ hairstyle is probably a bit of fan service, but I think it’s more tied into her connection with Visenya. Daenerys in the books and the show braids her hair in the Dothraki tradition after they won a battle. In the books, they only have a single braid and they add bells to the braid after a victory, which the show omits.

    I LOVE Rhaenyra’s gray wrapped long doublet thing! The way Emma wears it feels very androgynous if not outright masculine and the shape language of the silhouette is very striking. I also immediately noticed the Arryn cape and instantly appreciated the costuming that much more, but I think Oscar’s costume is by far my favorite. Finally! A Tully in red and blue 🥲 and the scales are lovely

    idk if you noticed but rhaenyra wears a heart necklace that matches syrax’s heart shaped necklace (idk how it is called but it’s the sort of necklace that holds the saddle around the neck!)

    Yes yes yeeeees! I am totally making Rhaenyra with that red costume!
    I am totally on board with your choices.
    I also liked the costume of Lohar and Lannister. Not to forget all the glam and glory of Lord Simon.

      I feel the « glam » of our beloved Ser Simon deserves an honorable mention, at least. I know you covered it in the Ep. 3 video, but we did not get to see how much purple & gold (not really bronze) with embroidered white branch motifs are evident. Perhaps it was cleaned/refurbished during the castle repairs? I have to know the story behind his (definitely not House Strong color) elaborate « drip » of my favorite supporting character! 😂😂😂

      @@Costume_CO thank you. I look forward to watching.
      The season 2 costumes didn’t seem as focused & fabulous as the season 1 « collection ». However, this show has so much more costuming to enjoy, it’s just a matter of degree.
      Thank you for making such high quality videos on this niche subject. You bring a great deal of joy to my daily grind.

    LOVED Jeyne Arryn's costume here. That is what I had expected Sansa to dress in Season 5 onward. Similar to Alicent in S01, she donned her dead aunt's gowns in the books.

    Costume # 5- Ulf's outfit is fit for a regular class "small folk". I do like the fact his "outside walking coat" has embroidery down the front that kind of look like a dragon. It still looks second hand, but second hand with a little class. It reminds me of when I was a little girl, we were poor, so we had "Sunday clothes" for church and "daily clothes" for school. His outside walking coat is his "Sunday clothes". #4- Rhaynera grey dress- I love this grey dress and it tells the world, " I am all about business!!! Take me seriously or expect your downfall." This is perfect for the men of this time period to NOT IGNORE HER (at your doom if you do). She looks all business in it, and it's perfect for dragon riding. #3- Alicent's hooded coat dress- It is cute. It says "I want to just be left alone." Hence, the hood on it. She wants oblivion. The material looks like a blue brocade, like curtains in a musty old home library. So, maybe the blue brocade represents "longetivity" as though I want to be left alone and I ain't gone nowhere yet. The white undergarment is soft and light- which represents "freedom" and "weights of life being lifted" from her. #2- Jeyne Arryn WTF gown says "I am all about business so don't mess with me!" I love the wide sleeves and the flowing bottom of this dress. #1 Rhaynera's red gown and cloak- She looks good in red! This outfit speaks volumes to viewers! I also like your honorable mentions. Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to season 3 and your evaluations of the HOTD costumes. Be blessed.

    Personally, while I understand that references to GoT are somewhat necessary to keep casual viewers interested, I really wish they would tone it down. There's too much similarity and it feels lazy. These costumes also take me out of the story because I can't help but think of Got and most of those costumes are from later seasons that weren't as good.
    Story-wise, it kind of makes sense for the costumes to favor one another since only a few centuries separate them, but still, they most likely wouldn't look this similar. I feel like the HotD Targaryens don't have enough of a signature style beyond the color palette and I wish they would have created a different signature style that didn't involve the sculpted shoulders as heavily, or did it a different way. Let the dragon shoulder be Daenerys' thing.

      @the-shadowed-gallery Hi the shadow, I have to agree with you here. I didn't mind them leaning in a bit, as you mention to have that cohesiveness, but it has become a bit boring and repetitive. And it's not just with Rhaenyra, it's most of the houses.

    • @MatthewH-hp8bp
      @MatthewH-hp8bp Месяц назад

      Yes, absolutely agree with the comment here, and with the reply from Costume_Co. You guys have it absolutely right. It does feel lazy, as though the designer found it easier to just make things look “GOT-ish” instead of putting in the actual work of analyzing what might have been the ancestor garments that changed and evolved over the course of 2+ centuries into the garments that we saw in GOT, and then try to make that THOSE garments come alive and tell the story. It doesn’t feel like designing so much as just copying ,making a few minor changes, and then calling it a day.

      @the-shadowed-gallery Месяц назад

      @@Costume_CO You're right, it is most of the houses and that's tragic, since we could have seen something more like the Frey's and how it was cool to see them in a fancier, more established dress before the house dwindled in influence.
      I also cannot see how the costumes tell any stories for the main cast. They look like a HotD runway collection instead of costumes. Embellishments and details lose their impact when each scene seems to have a new "wow" costume and nothing looks realistically worn in. I really feel this with the Blacks but not so much the Greens, since there seems to be more outfit repeating there and the embellishments blend into the costume more, making them look more realistic. It almost looks like Rhaenyra is wearing a ball gown every time she's not in bed and it's an odd choice since the writing doesn't support that kind of behavior. If anything, I'd have loved to see her stick to her riding attire (which I think they actually did balance practicality and embellishment in comparison) to show that she is constantly ready to fly out and defend her claim even though she's being told she cant. It also would have foiled nicely with Alicent's more feminine style of dress.
      It's not even just the costumes that do this, but also the music. One thing that really took me out of this story was hearing the Lannister theme from GoT. Tyland has not earned the Rains of Castamere motif. Again, I get that it's the same house, but just like they let us hear the dragon and Targaryen theme from GoT in season 1 when Rhaenyra flies in and then let's it go, I would have loved to hear a different theme for the Lannisters that maybe hints at or sounds similar to the GoT music but ultimately is different.

    • @the-shadowed-gallery
      @the-shadowed-gallery Месяц назад

      Yeah, it really is disappointing. I also feel like the same effort was not put into every costume. It feels like the creativity (let's call it that for argument's sake) was flowing for certain characters and all the budget and time went there, and then for everything else it was just generic fantasy.
