  • The stone house renovation continues & a new phase of the project is getting closer! 🔎👒 Download June's Journey for free here: woo.ga/e7xqhmvk Thanks to June's Journey for sponsoring this video.
It's been a peaceful week working on our little stone cabin in the countryside...for the most part. Spring is springing with everything starting to bloom & grow. We pressed on with finishing the brick overhangs although gale force winds brought work to a halt for a couple of days. And with the perfect growing season just around the corner, we also focused on expanding the vegetable garden on the homestead in an effort to grow A LOT MORE this year!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky & Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Hey guys. Just a quick note on "nitrogen fixers". While there is nothing wrong in composting broom in your Hügelculture-bed (which you pronounced very well), the ability of certain living plants to fix nitrogen comes about by taking nitrogen from the air and "fixing it" in symbiosis with bacteria (Rhizobiaceae) in the ground around its root system. This makes these plants great pioneers, because they can grow in poor infertile soil. They produce their own fertility. Their use as "nitrogen fixers" for other plants comes about when they are cut back and thus part of the root system also dies back, which liberates the nitrogen attached to that part of the root system. That's how these plants work (legumes, clover, all faboideae ...). So the buried broom will not fix nitrogen for you. In decomposing it will still provide nutrients (but not more than other green material). Hope this explanation helps. To find out more about nitrogen fixing plants and how to use them search for permaculture and companion planting. Cheers from Italy.

Victoria - a tip on fruit tree pruning (if you aren't already), and that is to use secateurs and loppers on live wood and a tree pruning saw on dead wood. This will help a lot to maintain the sharp edge on your secateurs. While expensive, a preferred brand by arborists and gardeners for a pruning saw is Slinky - made in Japan. With proper care just one will last years, but be careful - the teeth are razor sharp. It cuts on the pull, not the push; much more efficient and user-friendly. (2) as for raised beds they can be a challenge because essentially they are in-ground beds lifted out of their normal habitat and expected to do as well or better in their new location. They 'miss' the cool adjacent soil, the overnight dew collection, the shade and benefits of micro-organisms. The health of our planet's soil lies within its top 10-20cm and the less that is disturbed the better. Many farmers and gardeners are beginning to do very shallow tilling, if any at all. Research is ongoing at agricultural colleges in many countries. Keep up the great work!

I also have raised beds and I too added the logs etc to fill about 1/3 of the bed. I found after the first season it dropped in depth so I had to add more soil. Also, here in Southern CA we have ground squirrels, voles and moles. They have dug up in the bottom of my raised beds this year and eaten the roots off of my broccoli and flowers!!!! So now I have to remove all of the soil and put hardware cloth on the bottom of the bed first. You can google it if you're not familiar with hardware cloth. Take care and thanks for sharing your life with us!

From one gardener who did it wrong the first time to another: design your garden beds and boundaries on paper or computer. Then go with your design if you want it to look good and save you some redo. I thought that one garden bed would enough 15 years ago. I now have 13 beds and they are scattered wilie nillie. As regards the new garden location, I really think you need to either borrow or hire a compact tractor with a cultivator and rip up your in ground veg beds, failing which a pedestrian rotavator. The timing will benefit you greatly in getting some crops going early. I know it is a cost but would the crops help negate that?

It’s the way we dress in New Mexico too! 😁. The stone wall looks awesome with all the concrete/cement removed!

all that broken bricks would make great pathways between gardens; the tiny house is looking good, are you putting an extra floor in it? was noticing the holes in the stones that look the size of roof beams?
will you be building a porch out the front to protect the door? would look awesome too
loving the blossoms at the moment, do they produce fruit too?
    gorgeous sunset!
make beautiful stone steps going from the green house to the new section? it would look lovely, especially if you continued the small wall down either side
    thanx for sharing

So glad for you both that the cottage is almost done. Will you move in there?

I would really recommend you checking out Charles Dowding’s no dig gardening. He is in the UK somewhere if you haven’t heard of him.

I just realized if you two want to be formal, you can go by Richard and Victoria; or when you're feeling playful, Ricky & Vicky 😃

Victoria tge newly placed garden beds look really good in their nre location. Your going to be amzed at hiw quickly the branches decompose. My sister and I did a small grouping of raised beds 5 years ago. Last year, I had the beds moved to face my sidewalk. I would guess 99% of the wood had decomposed. I planted a variety of bulbs. Lots of pretty flowers. ⚘️🌷🌼🪻🌷

I accidentally referred to you as "Vicky and Ricktoria" today when I wanted to talk about you 🤣
