Omg ,the coin flip story is hilarious!!!! I once got in a yelling match with my google mini asking it to play You Can Feel it All Over by Stevie Wonder, and it kept replying "Ok, playing Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder." After a handful of "no...ok google, play Feel...It...All...O...Ver...." attempts I gave up, and Sir Duke started playing, which turns out to be the real name of the song I wanted. Smart ass piece of technology.

During lockdown a local community started a fairy wood near us for the local children. And it’s a now ten minute walk full of fairy doors, fairy clothes, little houses, paper mushrooms etc all made by children and their families. The most special but is the messages the children have written wishing everybody good health and wishing happy things. We went and it was magical and wonderful. They have maintained it this last year and for Easter they are leaving little wood blocks for the children to paint and leave and start adding new items to the fairy wood 🥰

Ahh Jen, not gonna lie- I’ve actually had tears watching this. What with the fox, the fairy clothes, IVF, your eyesight, and then your mum sending those lovely flowers. It’s been all the feels. I find you so inspirational. One of my autoimmune diseases is something called Sjogren’s Syndrome which attacks your secretary glands so you get dry eyes, mouth, skin, sinuses, bowels, everything basically gets widespread inflammation. It can be quite debilitating at times and it sounds like you have similar symptoms with plus, plus, plus to deal with on top. Yet you still manage to put positivity back into the world with your words and creativity. Like I say, it’s truly inspirational and I want to thank you for the effort that it must take to do that some days. Much, much love and best wishes xxxx

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  3 года назад +9

I actually have suspected Sjogren’s; there’s big crossover between that and Ectodermal dysplasia. We’re going to test for it when I’m back in appointments. Got to say, the waking up thinking that you’re dying because you can’t breathe is...not the one, is it? Big hugs xx

    • @amandalavelle2638

@@jenvcampbell it’s not great no! I’m asthmatic as well so they often irritate each other. Hope you can get something sorted to ease your symptoms. I’m on hydroxychloroquine (the drug Trump thought cured covid) and that’s helped with my eyes a bit- I’ve not had a serious infection since being on that anyway! Big , big hugs back to you to xx

Gosh. The wood anemones hit hard. I think we look for those connections and just find that everything, thoughts and nature and history and bodies, is so interconnected. It is strange. And very beautiful. I have been thinking so much about magic and how imaginative magical worlds are places of refuge and psychic experimentation. I don't think there's anything wrong with playing with the idea that nature can send you a message.

I think the smart speaker thing is really unsettling. I mean whoever planned that obviously thought it would be amusing - but didn’t consider what people might have going on in their lives or why they might need a smart speaker.

This is actually a big point of conversation for development and design. The industry (specially of UX design) focuses a lot on "quirkynizing" its products and sometimes I believe we lose focus on the actual uses of these techs by people, there's a line in which these things stop being a giggle and start feeling patronizing to the user.

This was a beautiful video. It took me on an emotional roller coaster which started with me imagining you as a child creating magical stories to help you cope with anxiety. My heart went out to that little girl so much... then the fox.... and all the emotions wrapped up with the significance of that. Covid has been so hard .... fir some more than others. Again my heart breaks for you and the struggles Covid has brought to your plans for starting a family. Still ultimately what comes through in your words by the end is the feeling of hope.... and I find myself uplifted. I’m just very moved. You’re such a beautiful soul and I thoroughly enjoy you. I wish you so much happiness.

Thank you for your video, Jen! The fairy clothes and door is something I didn't know about. I don't think it exists in Germany. But, when walking in a forest before Christmas my parents and I noticed some Christmas ornaments hung on leafless trees. According to my mum it is something called "Waldweihnacht" (forest Christmas) and has some roots in folklore as well. We checked and the ornaments were made of plastic so they wouldn't break in the wind or when falling down. After New Years we checked again and they weren't there anymore. Since they were made of plastic, I hope they found everyone and that they will return next Christmas. It was really lovely and magical while they were there. Another thing: I had to laugh so much when you were telling us about your sarcastic smart speaker! I obviously don't use mine often enough :D

I remember the fox last year and telling you about my the fox cubs in her garden. One of them got its head caught in some rubbish (I think a jar ) and they couldn't catch it right away and I remember when it happened like you said it just felt like another last straw that made things that little bit heavier. They did eventually the following day find out that a neighbour had seen the cubs and think somehow it had managed to get out of the predicament so all ended well ❤️ It's such a crazy year to look back on xx Thank you for chatting with us xx

Oh gosh, I totally related to the thought process of 'if this happens. things will be okay'... I've never heard of anyone else really talk about but I love the idea of it being compared to spell casting- a much more positive/ awesome way to look at it... When you said you were looking at the patterns in your left eye due to damage/scarring it made me think of how I periodically "check" my eyes by closing one and then the other (I have very limited peripheral vision). The first time my peripheral vision went away (the reason there's a first time is a bit of a long story) it happened very slowly, so I think a part of me feels I need to check every now and then to somehow prevent it from getting worse again. Which is ridiculous, of course, but I guess it sort of goes along with the kind of connection-finding you were talking about in the video.

Jen this was just lovely. I can totally get what you are saying about rituals bringing you comfort when you were younger I did this a lot the first song on the radio was a sign of what sort of day I would have at school for example and I had to have a certain hospital bag packed a certain way. I still have rituals as an adult to I’m very much a everything has it’s place at home and wow betide anyone who move things 😂😂

That’s such a lovely idea to add to the fairy garden! I had a very similar experience to you with university choices, except I applied to Oxford, Durham, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Warwick. As soon as I got to Oxford for my interview I felt so overwhelmed and didn’t really have the confidence to articulate my ideas - I was very glad not to get in! I chose Edinburgh and I loved the city so much that almost ten years later, I’m still here.

I loved the story about the fox - foxes are so beautiful and wise - there is a tame fox called Fang who lives near me (raised in captivity his whole life) he goes into care homes and ‘works with’ disabled children, he is a therapy pet. He lives with a human family and walks on the canal with his family and their dogs. He is quite a celebrity around here - Also love the talk of fairies, it must have been so lovely to discover the fairy clothes lines in your local wood - have you seen Samantha Bryans work? Google her, I think you will love her work. I met her about 10 years ago at a Made By Hand event held at a National Trust property where I worked - instantly fell in love with her fairy world X

I really enjoyed this video. I understand your thoughts about trying to find meaning. My mother died at the start of the first lockdown 31st March (long story we were stuck in NY) anyway a few days after she died, I noticed in the back yard of the apartment bleeding hearts started to grow in between gaps in the concrete. This gave me such joy. I don't know why. Just a little message from the universe perhaps.

Thank you for such a beautiful and honest video. You'll forever have a special connection with that forest and fox now. I'm the same with searching for signs, if the speed sign on my way to work says I'm going 28mph (instead of 27 or 29) I tell myself everything will be okay. Which is comforting but also unnecessarily stressful when it doesn't happen! I can't wait to read whatever you release next, your writing is such a balm. Whoever left the fairy clothes and door will be enchanted by your clothes, I'm so excited for them❤xx

Hi Jen. Recently life has been hard emotionally. The pandemic of course. Also I'm attending my first year of law school which has kept me ultra indoors as I can't safely go to libraries or coffee shops to study. I haven't known anyone very close to me who has passed from Covid, but there has been a sequence of dogs in my life dying, a friend from high school spontaneously passing, and an utter inability to use any of the methods of comfort and escapism I enjoy because of the load of my courses, which has been confusing and miserable, I think Moreno because I don't know anybody. It's compounded by a sad sense of jealousy for my partner who has been working from home since he graduated and gets to play video games and escape essentially at a whim. It's odd, because my problems aren't specifically pandemic related, but regular problems, like attending a vigil for a deceased friend or weightlifting for stress reduction, have been alchemically altered by distancing and converted into this sad, extraneous and burdensome fear layered onto normal activities. Your discussing talk to text technology has given me inspiration for a new, potentially more fun and creative way to take notes this evening though! Thanks a bundle for sharing c:

Hi Jen. >This was a really warm update. I’m sorry to hear about all the troubles you’ve been through, and I know a sorry won’t do much and ahahah I’m sorry for that too. Thank you for your updates and comforting voice and stories. I feel exactly the same way about looking for “signs” when I’m struggling and also that thing where you change your accent to fit whoever you’re talking to? My younger siblings always make fun of me for doing it but I don’t really do it on purpose and tbh I don’t know how to stop sometimes haha. I’m from Malaysia so the accents I’m talking about REALLY vary. And unfortunately can come off as offensive??? But I’m working on it. Idk if you’ll read this but I wanted to update you on me. I have major depressive disorder and panic disorder (had it since 2014) and I just turned 29 on the 14th and I feel like a complete and utter failure. I’m still dependent on my parents financially. I had a relapse in January following an 8 day hospitalization for like some really random burn out related physical illnesses. And like I’m suicidal every few days and wanna harm myself every few days and I’m trying to get better but it’s so hard to even get out of bed. I hate myself all the time, which wasn’t the case before ya know. And this past month I’ve been avoiding watching your videos because I know it’ll bring me comfort but for some reason I just... wasn’t ready for that? It doesn’t make sense, nothing makes sense... am I punishing myself? Or am I avoiding something? Should probably talk about this with my therapist haha. Anyway, I just wanted to say. Thank you for your videos. They NEVER fail to bring me comfort. And they’ve helped keep me sane all of 2020. Which is no small feat. Because I am highly depressed and anxious. So yeah thank you. Much love. **virtual hugs**

Same! I'm from the Ozarks in the US which has a particular kind of regional accent, and while I've never had a very strong accent I have less of one now than I used to - but when I go home it comes right back out again, or sometimes a drawn out word will slip out unexpectedly and all of a sudden I sound like my grandmother.

Don't know about accents, but I love the way you speak. Oh my the fox story was lovely, and made me cry. I have so any symptoms, ( not as serious as yours, I am 81). I have RA and a few other aging problems. Very interesting video! Love everything you do, and you are quite an amazing person. I love your dog too. I am in the USA.

Re your smart speaker. In the beginning of owning computers they came without images and we had a text only game of escape. We couldn’t work out how to open the door when we finally found it and I typed in a few choice swear words. “No need to be like that” replied the programme. Yay for programmers with a sense of humour.
I’ve got Sjogrens - dry mouth dry eyes dry everything so my throat is dry so I chew sugar free gum which somehow means that I have some moisture in my mouth. I have eye drops and stuff for blepharitis as well. My sight is getting worse, my eyes hurt a lot of the time and my vision is quite blurred but I can still see to read and stitch thank goodness.
One thing I have meant to do all lockdown is do a deep clean of our house but I just cannot face it. I’d rather watch paint dry!! We have clean albeit un-ironed clothes, we eat well as I don’t mind cooking, but cleaning? My only feeling is that nobody is going to be coming round to see me!
Shielding for a year has been hard but I’ve needed medical appointments all year and have felt safe in all the environments I have accessed, doctor, endoscopy, physio, optician, dentist etc. Those have been appointments I couldn’t put off in any way. It’s been a normal year in other words, just with masks.
I’m ready for some better weather though. The sun is shining so a walk by the sea is coming up. Lucky me!! Take care hugs x

Jen, I absolutely LOVED what you wrote, amazing! The pandemic here in Brazil is still hitting really hard, and the vaccination process is being very slow. I basically can count on not doing much in person this year either... Your video definetely made my day a little bit brighter :)

Thank you for making this video and talking so honestly about the pandemic. I live in Argentina and things are getting worse again but because of how fragile how our economy is, the government isn't doing much yet. I have to go to work and it's getting harder to do that without worrying and having anxiety attacks. With all of that going on, your video was comforting. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in finding meaning amidst this caos and uncertainty.

Hiya Jen from a fellow North Easterner who doesn’t sound like one anymore either. I’m a Geordie tho and you’re a Mackum - but still 😜 I LOVE watching your videos. I was so pleased to see you’d put a chatty one up cos I’ve had a hard day emotionally today and I always feel a bit better when I watch and listen to you. I can’t explain exactly why - but you’re a bit like a balm to me. I bet loads of people who watch you on here wish you were their friend in real life - I do ( she says, sounding like a suck up !). You’re fab - so interesting and clever and funny and honest. I want to be like you too. God I really am a suck up 🙄. I feel for you so much for what the twatty universe has been handing to you. You are amazing though - Mr M is very lucky. Anyhow, my confidence crisis that sent me on a downwards spiral today, has a lifted a bit now. Thanks xxx

Their sizing takes a bit of getting used to, I think, though I’ve had no issues at all with their dungarees, but of course those don’t need to be fitted to any part of your body ☺️ they are happy sacks, ha x

I have similar issues with my eye. My left has always been a dud. My right one has a cyst that has hairs growing out that are painful and have had more corneal abrasions lately and OMG does that hurt. The surface of my eye is similar to a gold ball, pitted. My eyes are also dry AF. I also have to use drops so often. I love iPhones as well as they help me see. I also rely on my sister a ton.

I would love to know what strategies you use to cope with your illness, the reason I ask, isn't to be nosy. I suffer with clinical Depression and have done since my teens, I'm now in my fifties, I've done loads of different therapies over those years. However I'm always interested in how other people cope with there health issues, on a daily basis... I appreciate my situation differs from yours, however it does effect my whole life and the choices I'm able to make.. xx
