Gangnam is famous for expensive land in Seoul. Would you believe it if I told you that there is a shantytown in Gangnam? There is a slum called 'Guryong Village' on the other side of a luxury apartment complex with a road in between. This is a neighborhood where people who were forcibly relocated due to land development in Seoul before and after the 1988 Seoul Olympics live. This is one of Seoul's representative slums, but it's not dangerous.
Let's explore another side of Seoul, Gangnam Guryong Village together.

THANK YOU to this channel for actually showing this. I cannot possibly believe that this is SEOUL, Korea. Everything about the media constantly talks about this place being a "US Ally" with no problems and all about K-pop. This is the FIRST TIME i ever expected to know and understand that there is a "slum" in SEOUL, KOREA.

Mass media is biased. It always has been. Did you know there are also slums in Madrid, Paris, and Milan? The divide between developed and developing countries is non existent anymore. It’s all just media hype or cropping that determines which countries are “rich” from those who are “poor”. In reality, poverty stats and the wealth gap are consistent for most developing and developed countries, mostly hovering around 10-20% for all but the poorest countries.
I'm Korean, and I live near that place. Let me explain.. this place is not actually a slum, and there are not much people who actually even live there. That is why it is so silent and clean.
So what is this place?
After Korean war, some people illegally settled down there. Land owners or government didn't look into them cuz it was a shit land by then.
But when redevelopment started, this place became gold, because at that time Gangnam already became one of the most expensive place in Korea.
Even though those people settled down illegally, Korea has a law that with years of living in certain place, nobody can just kick out the residents from the place.
So during rapid redevelopment of Gangnam, rich people bought those houses there from wartime settlers thinking that place is going to get developed soon, like all other areas around the town.
By the way when a place is redeveloped, as the residents has to leave the place, governments pay certain amount of money for them.
So the home owners want the new going-to-built apartment for compensation while gov been trying to convince them for paying equivalent amount of money.(But everyone knows getting the apartment is much more beneficial)
Deal has been stuck since then, so that is why the place is still look like it is in 60s😂
If you wanna see the real slum, better find real ones.(Of course there are slums in every country, including Korea) But nah this one ain't.
Thanks for the info
Thanks. It did catch my attention it was too empty.
Obrigada. Pela rica informação.
Thank u. I thought same thing as you
My company is near that area.
Because long-term residents receive almost the same compensation as owners.
Not only the land owners but also the people who live there are extremely wealthy.
Most of the local people do not live there.
However, in order to maintain the title of long-term resident, the living environment is maintained.
They visit periodically and stay there for a few days.
Just take a look at the fact that a small apartment near that area costs at least $1.2 million.
Development is not taking place for a long time due to the conflict between land owners, long-term residents, and Seoul Metropolitan Government.
Those people are extremely rich. In order to develop land in the country, there is a system that compensates not only the landowner but also the tenants. They pretend to be residents and cheat in order to get that compensation. Those who pretend to live there and cheat are rich people who own expensive luxury apartments and luxury cars in other regions.
I like living in that place. It's quiet, there are no crowds to make you dizzy..😅

Nice walk tour through the slum of Seoul city. But it doesn't look like a typical slum area as those in the developing countries. May be because it's a slum area in a developed country. And looks very quiet and peaceful actually.
slums don't always look the same. The only similarities are the people struggling to survive.
I thought the same thing very well kept up for a slum I love all the greenery ❤
But it's clean even the streams. Not like other cities.
Actually, people live in this slumped area they are not poor people.
They are waiting for fair redevelopment compensation from government.
They have been disputed unfair government compensation over decades and they are refusing to accept government offer.
Land market value is much higher than buying apartment this area.
Purchase land in this area is limited most people cannot afford purchase properties in here.

The people over there are not truly poor, but are holding on due to redevelopment compensation issues, which means they are committing illegal activities.
The truly poor people in Korea live in villas (or dorms) in relatively high altitude areas such as Sillim-dong, semi-basements, rooftops, or sleep out on the street.

Very clean for slum area...amazing

Every big city has this kind of neighborhood. Even if you go to Dubai, you'll find it behind highrise buildings
I don't think there's a place like this in Dubai and Doha
Slums are everywhere in this world..only certain parts of this world slums are called in different words or ways..for instance in my country there are no slums BUT rented houses like studios, 1 or 2 bedrooms are actually "slums" to the underprivileged residents here.
The cleanest and calm slum I ever seen. So peaceful❤
2 things impressed me 1 the absolute silence. obviously it has to do with the culture of the people. anywhere else in the world, I think if you found such a small society, it would be noisy at least with the voices of small children. and 2 of the nice cars you saw parked around. a big contradiction with the state of the settlements where people live. in the past I tried to visit this village with google earth but there was no access to its streets.very very very good video
Because they lack children nowadays and too many old people.
Meskipun dikatakan "slum area" tp aku ga ngeliat sampah, hanya barang bekas yg bertumpuk dan rumput liar, kalo dirawat dikit jg bakal jd pedesaan yg rapih
A slum that's very clean. Nice❤love Sokor🇰🇷🇵🇭❤️
Even their slums are so beautiful ❤
It doesn't really seem inhabited. Usually, in all slums around the world, it is very lively, with many residents per square meter.
It looks like an abandoned place earlier.
Korea's slums are very clean😂amazing😅
Only elders, no kids or young people in slum. That's very sad because someone abandoned their parents and elders did not benefit from South Korea's economic development. But on the other hand, I am glad that there are no children who have to inherit poverty.

Guryong Village is a shanty village formed by people with no place to go one by one, pushed by the development of the city center since the late 1980s, and about 2,000 people currently reside illegally in 403 shanty houses. This is the last remaining shanty town in Korea. The reason why it has not been redevelopment is that the old people here are making unreasonable demands to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
And less than a third of the 2,000 people whose addresses are registered here actually live here. Those who register their addresses here want a lot of financial compensation because the land price in Gangnam is expensive, but they are not landowners here.

Yeah cleanest slum i ever seen and take note of the plants and air-conditioning

This is not a slum. It is just an area neglected during the redevelopment process. The people who own or live in this area are not poor at all. They have invested here for speculative purposes. Actually, it is unimaginable to see scenery like this in Korea.

I don't mean to glorify poverty because truth is, no one wants to be in that level of poverty, but slums, or poor areas in certain places, like Korea and especially Japan are relatively clean, if not cleaner and less crowded than poorer areas in other Asian countries, like the Philippines, India, and many others, and most especially African developing or poverty-stricken places that happened to be quite a mess. I'm sure that those who are living in those conditions may find some level of solace in the long run after getting immune to its conditions, and after embracing acceptance of their own fates, but if given a chance, I'm sure those people would want a better life.
Because of the small floating population and low population density. Slums in Korea and Japan are cleaner than Gangnam and Shibuya.
Japan is one of the densest populated countries on Earth, so it's not about the population, but I think more on the cultural aspects of things. Japanese are known for being tidy, or clean, and Korea comes close second, after all, they're quite geographically close to each other.
Có thấy ai ở trong khu này đâu? Chỉ đôi chiếc xe chạy qua và một cụ già, vắng vẻ quá, họ đi đâu hết ?
When apartment prices in Gangnam jumped during the 2000s, Guryong Village was also mentioned as a redevelopment site because it was located in Gangnam, and many people moved in for speculative purposes. However, since then, as the real estate recession approached, the redevelopment work of Guryong Village has been sluggish, which continues to this day.

I think, this not a dumpster or a slum area 😮, but this is a village for simple and poor people outside the city. In my country, the philippines, there are so many slum areas, and the biggest slum areas is in manila, where people that has been excluded from the good and rich society living there in poverty, near the garbage dump, and looking something to eat, and something to sell for in order to survive. Every poorest and developing countries in the world like the philippines, has its own issues in handling slums and garbage dump and waste incineration plant, but in Korea, if it's true that this place is so called korea's slum areas, is an example because they're doing it well. Hats off.
