Just a quick video of how I start to wean my calves off milk replacer, and a few other tips ect. I'm always happy to answer and questions anyone may have so don't eb afraid to ask xx
Can you please explain to me why these calves are not out in a field eating grass with the mothers? Surely both mother and calf are hugely distressed by this forced separation?
I'm new to this, but I thought calves weren't to be weaned until 7 - 8 months, but it sounds like you're weaning them at about 2 months. We've got cows here just to keep the grass low, they are not milk cows and not beef cows, their only purpose is to keep the grass low. In that situation, when should the calves be weaned. We have one bull in with the herd and have just decided to start up two herds, the other being the old calves that are sucking their mother's dry. Nose spikes aren't working so we're just starting separation protocol. Now we have 2 newborns who are about one months old, so they will have to to be separated into the new herd of old calves when they get to weaning age. But is weaning age 2 months or 8 months?
Completely normal to wean bucket calves at 2 months old, if they were on a cow then it would be around 7 months old. Not many keep them on much longer than that. Mine go on to make top price each time and are in perfect health. Milk replacer is very expensive as well, around £36 a bag so wouldn't be financially a good idea to keep them on much longer.

hi do you ever sell any weaned calves?
No, I keep them right through
Don't separated calves from their mother.
Better they are hand reared than have no life at all. Their mothers were dairy cows.
