Foot Pedals: An input device you didn't know you needed

  • Everyone knows about keyboard and mice... But the foot pedal?! What the heck? As usual, it turns out that they're not so expensive and very easy to set up - if you use the right software. Speaking of software, it's exactly because of NCH's Pedable application that this thing is so incredibly useful. You can use your foot to do 3 different things - including in games! Foot pedals aren't just for translators and transcribers...

    I love you man!! I transcribe music in Sibelius while listening to the audio file in VLC, and I was using global hotkeys on my keyboard. Recently purchased a second-hand food pedal and didn't know how to configure it! So glad I saw your vid and it's now working perfectly! THANK YOU!!

    I instantly thought of 2 ways I could use this foot pedal. For editing videos, I often have 2 hour-long gaming clips that I have to scrub through, cut, and clean up. I usually cut down 2 hour clips down to about 10 minutes. That's a lot of selecting the cut/select/delete functions over and over again. A foot pedal would make function switching in video editing software pretty smooth.
    Also for gaming, this could be pretty powerful. Mostly for functions that take your left hand off of WASD. Maybe mapping things like reload, ping, and crouch to the foot pedal would be helpful for some people.

    I find the non-transcribing pedals better i have two seperate pedals under my desk all programmed in a free program bundled with the pedals. I hated the fact the olympus pedals had intense software restrictions so i sold it. I use pedals for gaming mainly, voicechat and crouch. Its nice to give myself my feet something to do. The default key for generic footpedals is "b" which you can bind in game meaning that you dont even need to touch the software

    I just figured out what the issue was ... I can skip forward on videos like yours that have chapter selections, but you can't scrub through a video that isn't time stamped .. pretty cool machine ! just bought one from the thrift shop for 7 dollars...
    there was a Philips 505 dictation machine that I picked up first, didn't know what it was .. goggled it .. seen that it needed a bunch of other things, but only the unit was there.. i put it back .. and then noticed the footpedal switch on the shelf (someone seperated it from the machine) .. but it looked like it needed an adapter to use with the philips machine ... didn't feel like going through all that hassle , so I just bought the foot pedal separate and left the dictation machine ..

    Found your video on Amazon and LOVE the way you break things down. I'm a new transcriber and will be purchasing one of these. The question I was left with is, is the VCL Media Player the "same" as my FTW Transcriber software? If so, I'm assuming I follow the same steps within FTW to integrate their software with the pedal? Thanks in advance!

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  15 дней назад

      No, VLC is different software. The reason VLC is so useful is because it has "global hotkeys". IOW, they are keystrokes that work even when VLC media player is in the background on your puter. So, you can be typing in Word, and the keystrokes will work to start/stop VLC. You'll have to check to see if FTW Transcriber has a similar feature... BUT, if it's software that plays files and lets you transcribe all in the same application, then you don't have to worry about this "global hotkey" problem. Simple, right?! LOL!

    Thank you for the nice video. When at work, eating a sandwich, I tend to be scrolling (reading through webpages). Do you think something like this could SCROLL? I imagine I could program the left/right foot petals to be up/down, and apply a repeat rate sufficient for my needs. I'm curious how "jumpy" that may be. I wasn't sure if something like the accelerator in a vehicle exists, whereby the harder you press, the faster it would scroll. Again, great video, thanks!

    would this work with RUclips and any other videos such as company training videos that are hosted online? Do you have to use VEC? or can you use windows media player?

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  Год назад

      You can use the pedal + Pedalable software for pretty much anything. For YT for example, the spacebar plays/stops videos. So, you'd just configure the middle 'button' of the pedal to be Spacebar. The same is true of any other web site or software: you just need to figure out what the keyboard shortcuts are for play/stop, rewind, fast forward, or whatever - and then config Pedalable accordingly. The main benefit of VLC is that you can configure it to listen for 'global' keystrokes... IOW, even if VLC is in a background window, it will still pay attention to the keystrokes that the pedal sends. With something like YT, you'd have to make sure the YT vid in your browser is front and center, because otherwise tapping the pedal would just send a space to whatever application you are actively using in Windows.

    • @brandimills585
      @brandimills585 Год назад +1

      @@ScottiesTech So you have to keep VLC open but minimized somewhere? and also Pedalable? Should you change the Global hotkeys in both VLC AND in Pedalable for each type of video you are playing (like if it's different for YT than for training video online?)
      Also, I noticed that Pedalable seems to be for older versions of Windows. Will it still work right? I have downloaded it, and changed the keys, but then if i close it and go to search for it on my computer, it doesn't find it and i have to download it again in order to get it to open (it has the keys i put in saved though, so it's on my computer somewhere).

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  Год назад +1

      AH! If you have Intel integrated graphics inside your puter, Ctrl + Alt + Arrow keys rotates the screen! I did not know that... So, the easiest thing to do would be to pick a different key combo for VLC + Pedable, like: Ctrl + Shift + Arrow, or Alt + Shift + Arrow, etc.

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  8 месяцев назад +1

      It looks like your pedal might be the kind that is preprogrammed at the factory for certain keystrokes. That kind won't work with Pedable. Even if that's the case, you should be able to program VLC to work with the specific keystrokes programmed into the pedal, though.

  • @fredharvey9742
    @fredharvey9742 10 месяцев назад

    Apparently one cannot type in MS Word while simultaneously controlling RUclips playback with the foot pedal. The RUclips video has to be the active screen for the pedal to work. Have you heard of any workarounds? I know other people want to do the same. The get around the problem by playing back the video on one computer while trancribing/take notes on another. I can't seem to find ECH online to ask them about it.

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  10 месяцев назад

      No, that's The Big Problem: Normally, you can only control the active window. VLC is nice in that it has those "global shortcut keystrokes" where they will work even when the window is in the background. To do the same thing with any other program or browser, they'd have to program it to work that way. :(

    You said you were going over to "VLC." Does that mean either the software to or the website for the Infinity company? I'm looking at my box for my pedal (which is probably 13 years old), and I don't see the manufacturer's name anywhere. Anyway, I'd love it if I could just play a you tube video and transcribe it into word using my foot pedal to stop and rewind whenever the video goes too fast. I guess that's asking too much. How can I sync RUclips with my foot pedal?

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  2 месяца назад

      VLC media player is software that plays audio/video files, and you can get it for free here: www.videolan.org
      The problem with the foot pedal + RUclips vids is that you must have YT open on the screen for the foot pedal to work. If you have Word open and you're typing, your browser with YT vid will be in the background, so no pedal. VLC media player has these "global" keystroke settings that work even if VLC is in the background, and you're madly typing in Word.
      SO... the solution to your problem is to use something like 4K Video Downloader (www.4kdownload.com/). That lets you paste in a YT video link, and it downloads the vid to your puter. Then you open the downloaded video file in VLC, and use the pedal with VLC, type in Word with VLC in background, and Bob's your uncle.

    • @hotwireman49
      @hotwireman49 2 месяца назад

      @@ScottiesTech I guess it's a moot point because RUclips already transcribes videos so you can just copy and paste all the transcription and then have chat GTP format it. They're putting us all out of business.
