I'm probably pretty late but I'll explain anyway so that anyone seeing this in future understands. Basically you need to check if the 1'st term is also rational because the trick she gives first does not count the 1st term. If the powers are divisble when r = 0, then that means even the 1st term (r+1) is actually rational. But the trick gave only 6 and 500 respectivly (did not count the 1st term). To count the 1st term as well, you just do +1 to 6 and 500, getting 7 and 501 respectively. Now imagine if both the powers were not divisible when r = 0, that means the 1st term wasn't rational anyway and since the trick counts only the rational numbers without the 1st term you can leave it as it is without doing +1.
