- Hi all! This time I took up the old blacksmith's hammer ⚒. I found this restoration hammer in an old garage, where it lay for many years and waited in the wings. After a little fiddling with it, I got a good restored blacksmith's hammer. To restore the old hammer, I needed to remove rust, weld the chips with a welding machine, grind, anneal and harden the hammer. When the hammer was ready, I decided to carry an image on it. The drawing was chosen by me based on "The Man and the Bear" - this is an old Russian folk toy. Another name for the same toy is "Blacksmiths", where the same bear and peasant act as blacksmiths. After etching the drawing, it was time for the hammer handle, I made it from dry birch. Wedged the handle with three wedges with glue applied. I painted the handle with a simple stain, and this time I chose linseed oil for the protective layer. I was pleased with the result of this work and I hope you will like it too.
I used the following tools: wire brush, welding machine, blacksmith tongs, pencil, ruler, awl, angle grinder, drill, sander, orbital sander, sandpaper, mallet.

How I tempered a blacksmith hammer at home:
The hammer for hardening is heated to 760-780°, and cooled in water. The hammer is heated as a whole. The previously narrow end is hardened by lowering it into water and leaving the hammer in this position until the water stops boiling. After that, quickly turn the hammer and lower the striker into the water and hold it also until the water stops boiling. At this time, the middle part of the hammer will have time to cool to 500-600 °, that is, to a dark red heat. Then the hammer is lowered into the water as a whole and left in it until completely cooled. Leave in this case is not done.
