The root cause is the Arabs unwillingness to accept the Jews. In 1947 the was a partition plan by the UN commission for the partition of Palestine - 55% to the Jews and 45% for the Arabs and Jerusalem as an international city to be administered by the UN. Israel accepted this plan but the Arabs rejected it. The British mandate ended on 14th May 1948, the Jews declared their State but the Arabs didn't and instead 5 Arab states invaded the nascent State of Israel on 15th May 1948. After the war Jordan and Egypt occupied West Bank and Gaza respectively until 1967 war. From 1948 to 1967, the Arabs were fighting Israel even though there were no Jews and refused to declare their own State .
