Let me explain my concerns I live in Brasil and I tried 2 schools here and both didn't accept me because they only accept students with a maximum of 26 years. Then I looked for schools in Australia and despite they didn't negate me they state it is preferable that students commit before 26 years old. First of all thanks for the help anyway. Do you know portuguese? I know Capitania dos Portos, I am actually an Amateur Master (Mestre Amador). However I was refering to the Captain as a professional, those who command transport or passanger ships not recreational boats. I believe the Capitania dos Portos only issue recreative/amateur licenses not professional ones, maybe they issue professional licenses but for small vessels like, "escunas", fishing vessels, ferry boats and soo forth but ships are another completely diferent subject. In Brasil if one wants to be a ship captain then need to apply for the Navy schools, but they only accept maximum age of 26 no more then that, unfortunatelly, that is why I am researching to graduate myself outside of Brasil.

I was wondering, apart from job experience, is the license all that companies will look for? I came from another video on being a captain as a career, and they mentioned that many captains get 4 year degrees from Maritime schools. Do you know if that is most often the case, or if often you will do fine with simply the license? I get that the degree wouldn't hurt, but in most cases is it necessary (at least to compete?)
I have owned several boats up to 56 feet and plenty time on the water 15 years more then 4 days per week, how can I get an outvoting license now .thanks

@@uscaptainstraining if you're overseas in a different country what forms do you have to bring that you have shown time out on the water? can can you file all your paperwork online while you're in a different country and get the certifications also online without having to be in person?
If you have a boat and you register it you can take it out on the water without any license or training at all. The Coast Guard only requires that you have enough lifejackets, lights (at night) and other safety things. When I was 17 I bought a 13 foot boat, registered it, bought a life jacket and an air horn and flares, and went out in the ocean.
LifeisGreat - If your boat is 16ft or greater, you need to take the USCG approved boosters safety education course, if born in 1980 until present time. In other words, if you're born in 1980 (or more recent) and yoir boat is 16' or bigger, you need to get a "boating license" which is just taking a 3-6hr long safety education course. These courses are available online and can be done in one day. This is NOT to be confused with the captain's license that they're talking about in this video. This captain's license from the video is in regards to running commercial fishing charters or etc.
Four more steps - 1) study; 2) study; 3) study; and 4) study haha. Rules of the Road was the killer, failed the first time. It has a 90% pass rate, which used to mean you get an "A". I found that USCG Exam Prep was really useful as a study aid as it has the actual exam questions and it is free.

+Xbox/PC Gaming No, you would need an Unlimited Master license to be Captain of a cargo ship. Most people that do that go to a Maritime Academy, although you can "come up the hawsepipe" and start as an AB and work your way up.
Can I get my certification before I put the time in the water? I feel like I should know the rules etc before I get in the water, please advice! Thank you.
Pablo Cohen getting your boating license is the first (unspoken) step. That will teach you that stuff. The best analogy I can come up with, is that you can’t become a taxi driver without getting your driver’s license first.
Christopher Freeman - If you are out for 12hrs in one day, underway, does that count as 3days? Or is it any time over 4hrs per calender day? (Just asking, because her mentioned 4hrs equals 1 day).
It can be in other countries. The time will be considered oceans, near coastal, or inland depending on how it is recorded on your small vessel sea service forms.
Rob Brinkerhoff - No, you do not need a Captains license to operate your own non-commercial vessel. You simply need to take your boaters safety education course, and pass it. (It takes about 4hrs and cam be done online via a couple different websites. This is what people refer to when saying "their boat license".)
Another prerequisite is...-don't quite me on this, but I heard another prerequisite is to have a record of being on a sex offenders register , I'm not sure if it's true, but it seems that way sometimes.
If you don't have the sea time, you'll be an Ordinary Seaman (OS). all you need is your is a couple of schools. Basic ship's safety, Basic fire fighting.

I've heard that one should use a maritime log to track time on the water but how does the time on the water get verified and who verifies it? I've never worked on a boat but have owned boats and been on the water for more than 40 years. Great video, thank you.
Hallow sir I am from Bangladesh and wanna to have US CAPTAIN'S license. Is there any opportunity to get US Captain's license staying in Bangladesh through online? If I can have this license then is it applicable in IMO?
How does one document your time on the water? I've owned multiple boats over the course of 40years but have never documented that time.
You only need a captains license if you are using a vessel for work. (Making a profit)
Making a profit has nothing to do with it . You need a Captains Licence if you charge passengers / customers a fee
It also lowers your insurance if you own a boat.
Mike Johnson, insurance rate is lower if a Licensed capt works on a private boat/yacht for pleasure only

@@crankymcgee I thought the pre requisite to becoming a taxi driver for example is to be able to speak a foreign language...
how do you log your time on water?
You could get a Maritime Logbook and use that to log your time on the water. That's what I did.
Christopher Freeman - If you are out for 12hrs in one day, underway, does that count as 3days? Or is it any time over 4hrs per calender day?
(Just asking, because her mentioned 4hrs equals 1 day).
The marker screeching is killing me
no i DO NOT NEED TO PAY THE GOVERNMENT SO I CAN MAKE MONEY BROKEN SYSTEM
rss3781 thats what happens when our ancestors let the government have too much control.
I have type II diabetes will that disqualify my chances...
As long as you are properly medicated and your diabetes is under control you should qualify. Ultimately it will be up to the USCG evaluator.
can you take the captain training with out having to do step one like you can just get your certificate? can I just take the classes?
no, you need the experience
Does time on water have to be in the USA or other countries? Thks
It can be in other countries. The time will be considered oceans, near coastal, or inland depending on how it is recorded on your small vessel sea service forms.
Do I really need this to operate my own non-commercial ship? It may sound strange, but I want an old Frigate (1700s style 3 mast replica).
All I want to do is be a deckhand on container ships and move my way up to a officer position.
If you don't have the sea time, you'll be an Ordinary Seaman (OS). all you need is your is a couple of schools. Basic ship's safety, Basic fire fighting.
all BS gov does not need my money
Would my Navy deployment time count towards sea time??

Work on a vessel( merchant mariner, USN/USCG, fishing vessel) or buy a boat. Also just google "get my captain's license" and good info will come up.

Can a Non-American get this captain license ?
I may be mistaken but I believe you must be a United States citizen or have proof of legal residency in the United States.
biometrics? does that mean you have to get fingerprinted?
Yes, you are correct. When you go to the TWIC office to apply for a TWIC card they run a backround check and take your finger prints with a scanner.
hello, what do you mean by time on the water? being on some kind of ship as a crew member,or ......?

I've heard that one should use a maritime log to track time on the water but how does the time on the water get verified and who verifies it? I've never worked on a boat but have owned boats and been on the water for more than 40 years. Great video, thank you.
