Glenn Gould plays Die Meistersinger (excerpt)

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 27 ноя 2008
  • Prelude from 1st act of Die Meistersinger.
    Composed by Richard Wagner.
    Piano transcription by Glenn Gould
    Recorded in January 1974
    Now with Closed Captions!
Note: If you want to translate the captions for your local language using the automatic translation, please select "English: Without German Accent" at the "Translate from" field. Why? Because Glenn Gould speaks with German accent on this video, and change some words. For example: instead of "them", he speaks "zem". If you chose the caption track "English: Original" to translate, the automatic translator will get confused and probably many errors will appear.

The Meistersinger prelude is the best and greatest polyphonic music not written by J. S. Bach. I think that was the main attraction to Mr Gould. Notice how the polyphonic structure of the music is much clearer here than in orchestral performances.

I don't see why people often complain about Gould humming, especially here. Gould's humming is what I normally do when I listen to music as beautiful as this as well, only that I restrain myself from doing it in public so loud. When I'm watching and listening to this video at home, I find myself humming or even singing loudly the same lines as Gould is doing!

Now I got five words for this: GLENN GOULD IS THE DUDE!! (And of course Richard Wagner is the MAIN DUDE...!) This is like some alchemistic transformation of heavy bloodred wine into weightless liquid silver - proving that there's so much more to Wagner's unbelievable music than just a load of harmonic and instrumental overkill! Man, I'd love to hear the whole opera in this version (with Glenn Gould singing the vocal lines like "dee-dee-ja-daaa-PA-PA-PA-PAAAAA!!!"... LOL!)

You know you're cool when you're able to transcribe Wagner in an unliteral an inexact manner ;) My mother doesn't like it, but I think it provides a beautiful and valuable insight to the world of music and what one can do. The technique of transcription is rarely tought, as far as I know, that's why I admire it, especially when the musician is not just copying the scores but puts a lot of own interpretation into it. Glenn Gould once said, the only justification as a musician is to reinvent a piece with your own interpretation, to create something new...

Strangely perhaps, Gould's interpretation has a distinct ring of this composition's original authenticity, because Wagner stressed time and again the melodiousness and singability of his music, particularly Meistersinger. The same service was performed by conductors like Furtwaengler, Mengelberg, Golavanov, Stokowski, et al.
