Great Vid Izzy. I run my own business (Gen Builder) its a major step up from just laying, but being in control has its benefits, its not easy, its time consuming but when you get customers loving what you've built its very satisfying. You have proved yourself to be more than capable of doing the Foremans job, rectifying poor brickwork and levels when 1st on site, your organised and have a great work ethic. Iv been laying bricks 30 years so I'm an old fart 😅, trust me you are doing the right thing I remember the days like you that I just loved laying Bricks, wanted to be the fastest and neatest. Non of us want to take the responsibility of supervisor but If you are good at what you do it just happens. I'm now running massive multi million pound jobs in London and have been for 10 years with one of the biggest brickwork contractors out there. It's hard and I don't lay Bricks but I'm passing my knowledge to other people which is good. I'd love to be house building it's such an simple process and the buzz of a small gang working and having the craic is fantastic. Good luck mate and keep up the good content as it's so different from what I do and it reminds me of the good old days. 👍
I'm not a bricky and I'm not planning on doing any bricklaying yet I've been watching your videos for about an hour and a half now. Great content, well produced, love the enthusiasm and the high quality work mate!
Love the staying positive Izzy and yes the paperwork, wages and all that has to go with it as you grow. Time and time again I use to leave that to just lay some bricks to clear the head. As you grow buddy maybe think, as I did, which again is more money, but worth it, employ a good QS, the time and agro that saves is well worth it. Keep it neat, fast and plumb which is all I see at the minute, so well done buddy. Maybe time to think of getting your own wheelbarrow scaffold fixed hoist, again well worth the money, and a very good forward looking health thought to save a lot of lumping and leg work.
Really enjoying theses videos. Nice to see you've got the patience to nurture someone who wants to learn. Could you please tell me what the music is called that starts 26:10. Thanks.

Why do non-bricklayers watch this? I work in an office in a job that has nothing to do with the building industry. Far far from it... but I watch all your videos. They're a big help to pickup tips and advice for my garden room build. And I like that sound of the trowel running along the bricks and blocks as you cut off the excess. Oddly calming...! More than that... you and the team are a happy and positive bunch and you encourage your apprentices. Drew is coming along fast and its good to see! Hoping you use that monster trowel on a windy day. Might just catch the wind and blow you down south so you can price me my extension.. 🤣
😂😂😂 love the last bit about the wind haha thanks so much for watching the videos mate I really appreciate it! Fantastic to see how many people's such as yourself can pick up tips from them! Drew is doing great! Have a good Sunday Jaimin! New video tomorrow ☺️
If that had been me, as I lifted the last bucket on to the deck, I would have slipped on the layer of sweat that I had left after lifting all the previous buckets. Shows some good fitness.
I use to use 10 inch whs broad heel get one what's comfortable 13 inch u may aswell use a shovel Using that you will have arthritis if you ain't careful look after yourself if you want stay the distance
@19:00 or there abouts, I couldn't agree more, I used a nine inch trowel with a nice rounded end for most, almost all of my career (cut down from an 11"). Charlie tends to use a 8 to 9" trowel most of the time as well, all those huge trowels are for novices imo
Great video. I really like the instruction throughout also. Suits me as a Pro-DIYer or renovator. Could you possibly do a video or clip within, on what mix you use? (apologies if t is elsewhere) I assume it is 3:1 with a splash of plastercisier? but what does that work out in a mixer? 1/2 bag cement and 3 bags (75kg of sand)? enjoying the video though. Also tips on trowel control. Cheers Iz.
Hi Carl 👋 thank you so much for your feedback! I am doing DIY videos every Wednesday so I might end up doing one for you to help out. Usually our mix is half a bag of cement, eight shovels of sand
No fire cuts on wood beams? In the USA they are cut on an angle so top of beam is just to face of wall. That way if floor beams burn and pull downward the beam will just fall not jacking the wall up like a pry bar. That helps keep the masonry intact if theirs a 🔥
Well done drew, it's not easy to start with but once you get the hang of it you will smash it im just over a year in to laying was hod carrying for 5 years then the boss offered to teach me and I've not looked back since, keep it up and well done again
Drew is doing so well mate! Coming on leaps and bounds! He's a credit to me and a genuine lad, hence why I really don't mind taking so much time to go over anything with him
The way you teach your boys your positivity and your calmness you will have no trouble taking on the xtra responsibility your a natural leader and very likeable goes so far when dealing with all the other trades (and tards) Top man !
Thanks mate! I really enjoy trying to teach anyone really. Because I'm relatively "new" to the trade, I can relate quite well as it wasn't too long ago I was having the same issues, so they are easy to understand and correct! Have a great week
been laying 6 inch blocks in forgue , aberdeenshire for 4 weeks. and loading up and mixing. its 50m long one way and 40m return. 1.4 metres Tall. Arm ache 1000
My workplace closed down few weeks ago I was there nearly 8 years and I was made redundant so I've decided to take a few weeks to try and clear my head and redecorate / repair my house and I was considering trying to do a apprenticeship in brick laying I'm a 34 year old father of 2 so I was working 6-2 so I can pick my kids up and be home before my wife leaves for work and currently don't drive fingers crossed I can get my licence would my age or any circumstances go against me when it comes to applying for a apprenticeship loving watching the videos to pick up some little tips
Hi mate, sorry for the late reply! Very unfortunate that you've been made redundant, hope things are picking up for you! If your interested in becoming a Bricklayer, I would suggest becoming a "hod carrier" first. While your labouring, you can pick up the trowel and learn like that!💪 All the best, any questions just give me a message brother
You are a bloody grafter, the thing that amazes me is that you mix up and never gauge it in a bucket so to get all your compo the same colour is incredible.
Yet another awesome video. Useful tips but also some behind the scenes and what it involves to take responsibility. I actually started my brick apprenticeship because I have had a lot of stress, management and responsibility previously and I just want an easier life and to enjoy the bricks! I got offered trainee site manager a couple of weeks back and I turned it down, to their absolute shock! Good to get your honesty and I would say with 100% certainty that you are up for the task on this one! Keep it up! Jen 💥
Hiya Jen! Glad you enjoyed the video and found some parts quite helpful ☺️ next video I go over soldier course really simply! Sometimes it's best to do what makes you happy, rather than deal with constant stress and pressure, so fair play to you! Have a great week!
The bricklayer that tought me was drew, a scots man great man, he taught me to focus on the top and bottom Harris of the bricks , lining them up , and then you wouldn't be far of .
That's it mate 💪 dead easy once you get it..but trying to explain to someone who doesn't understand what they are looking for feeling for, is very hard 😂
Think your set up right to progress isaac mate .your very sensible beyond your years .Your a cracking bricklayer and you have a good way about you its infectious i saw that when we met up mate.I think a lot of bricklayers think the same as you just lay bricks its less hassle but there is a bigger picture especially as you get older the body cant do what it used to .If you can take things to the next level you'll gain more experience in other trades more knowledge and you'll lay bricks for longer mate .its about pushing yourself not taking the easy route .Be nice but be boss when you have to is my advice mate and learn off others as much as you can then find your own system. Good luck great channel brilliant videos and a nice young lad go for it mate .in years to come you'll still have your back elbows and shoulders as bricklaying really does cripple you in the end isaac. Good luck pal. Justin 👍
Hi Justin thank you so much for your support! Your right in the sustainability side of bricklaying. In going to give this a bit of a shot, and see how we get on from there! Thanks so much for your continued support over the years! Was brilliant to meet you and hopefully we'll be able to get together again in the near future! Hope you had a fantastic holiday mate! Best wishes to you and all the family x
Hello a MAson from Germany here. Really Nice work!! . I have some questions first i am pmpressed about the mortar it loses no water or things like that, what do you use to mixe it ? 8recipe?) : Second question is don`t you have any cranes on your construction sites in GB ? carryxing all the stuff by hand is very hard work i think
Top rate video again izzy it's great how you treat your staff you will get more out of them being nice Costco it the best I haven't been in years keep up the good work
Costco blew my mind 😂😂😂 always try to be good to my mates on site. No-one wants to get berated all day. It might have worked for the people teaching me..but not my style😂
Loving this. I’m only a DIY self builder managing my two story extension and labouring on some good trades I have in the contacts. Your vids are great viewing .
@@IzzytheBricky cheers for the reply. Yes indeed one of the hardest days graft was keeping two brickies going with blocks and muck all day on my place!!!!
Mate. I love the effort and the quality. Make sure you are covered with the customer. Taking over someone else's work can get really messy if anything goes wrong. I don't want to see you get screwed, cos you will screwed if you don't protect yourself. If you haven't already, get something in writing with the customer. Document any agreements and changes. Good luck.
You're sure those blocks weigh as much as you think? Maybe wet. The big hollow blocks are 25kg and they really are something, not sure what they weigh wet but they're a major.

Thanks so much mate! Great advice to be taken from your comment mate! And Drew's a mint lad, gotta make sure he's sorted
Not sure how I ended up here but enjoyed watching. Cheers
Haha thanks for watching mate 🙂 have a great weekend
You're a good teacher. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Mike!
Your good man.
Well done.
Thanks very much John
I work in IT and like your videos. I like to see the skill and details. Stark contrast to the guy who makes the new build inpectsion videos.
Top Video , Great Content and i really enjoyed your work ethic with the apprentice , You will go a long way in this business :) keep up the good work
Thanks so much mate! Greatly appreciate it 💪💪
I use to use 10 inch whs broad heel get one what's comfortable 13 inch u may aswell use a shovel
Using that you will have arthritis if you ain't careful look after yourself if you want stay the distance
@19:00 or there abouts, I couldn't agree more, I used a nine inch trowel with a nice rounded end for most, almost all of my career (cut down from an 11").
Charlie tends to use a 8 to 9" trowel most of the time as well, all those huge trowels are for novices imo
Great work Drew 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Top lad ain't he
Well done Izzy your smashing it! Also kept my first trowel haha
Haha gotta be done mate, hang it up and display it like me💪
We do things differently but your end product looks really good.
New video out today mate ☺️
No fire cuts on wood beams? In the USA they are cut on an angle so top of beam is just to face of wall. That way if floor beams burn and pull downward the beam will just fall not jacking the wall up like a pry bar. That helps keep the masonry intact if theirs a 🔥
Well done drew, it's not easy to start with but once you get the hang of it you will smash it im just over a year in to laying was hod carrying for 5 years then the boss offered to teach me and I've not looked back since, keep it up and well done again
Drew is doing so well mate! Coming on leaps and bounds! He's a credit to me and a genuine lad, hence why I really don't mind taking so much time to go over anything with him
Keep pumping it drew is coming along nicely good on him
Drew is still making fantastic progress this week too 💪💪
The way you teach your boys your positivity and your calmness you will have no trouble taking on the xtra responsibility your a natural leader and very likeable goes so far when dealing with all the other trades (and tards)
Top man !
Thanks mate! I really enjoy trying to teach anyone really. Because I'm relatively "new" to the trade, I can relate quite well as it wasn't too long ago I was having the same issues, so they are easy to understand and correct!
Have a great week
You seem a great teacher, not a bad bricky either, well done
Thanks Will, appreciate it
Couldn’t believe it when you started climbing up a ladder wi that mortar labouring an laying fair play.
No rest for the wicked mate!💪💪💪
been laying 6 inch blocks in forgue , aberdeenshire for 4 weeks. and loading up and mixing. its 50m long one way and 40m return.
While your labouring, you can pick up the trowel and learn like that!💪 All the best, any questions just give me a message brother
really enjoying the videos
Cheers mate
Nice Charlie reference. You are a sound brickie 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers brother appreciate it 🤜🤛
You are a bloody grafter, the thing that amazes me is that you mix up and never gauge it in a bucket so to get all your compo the same colour is incredible.
Thanks so much mate I appreciate it, New video out later on tomorrow! Hope your well
very good boss/teacher, kind and positive feedback, well done. hello from Dingle
Cheers Seán, I really enjoy teaching
Hard hard work bro. Keep it up 👍🏼
Thanks bro
Sarrrrrrnnnd mate. Great vid as always
Saaaaaarnd mate!!
Fair play to you mate! Love the work ethic! Keeping motivated on your own. Keep pushing Isaac
Always pushing mate💪💪
Such great videos buddy
Thanks so much mate! New one tomorrow
Fair play buddy, great grafter.
Thanks maten
Hello a MAson from Germany here. Really Nice work!! . I have some questions first i am pmpressed about the mortar it loses no water or things like that, what do you use to mixe it ? 8recipe?) : Second question is don`t you have any cranes on your construction sites in GB ? carryxing all the stuff by hand is very hard work i think
Interesting video and good patient training of your apprentice.
Cheers mate appreciate it! Always like to be patient with the lads
served my time back in the early 80's 1000 facing bricks a day on a good day. Loved the job. Just wish my knees were still up to it
Thanks for the comment, mate really appreciate it
Thanks for the comment, mate really appreciate it
Top rate video again izzy it's great how you treat your staff you will get more out of them being nice Costco it the best I haven't been in years keep up the good work
Costco blew my mind 😂😂😂 always try to be good to my mates on site. No-one wants to get berated all day. It might have worked for the people teaching me..but not my style😂
Good lad you ha e a good crew 👍
Loving this. I’m only a DIY self builder managing my two story extension and labouring on some good trades I have in the contacts. Your vids are great viewing .
Thank you mate! Quite hard labouring on some trades isn't it 😂 all the best!
Good luck.
Thanks very much mate! Appreciate your guidance 🤜🤛
Have every faith in ya lad, content creation sorted, best brickie on yt sorted, best forman pending 👊🏻
Cheers Ash! Even if it's for a short period of time! Get this job done and onto the next
WOW 🙂 what are the proportions to obtain such a soft mortar ?
You're sure those blocks weigh as much as you think? Maybe wet. The big hollow blocks are 25kg and they really are something, not sure what they weigh wet but they're a major.
Some graft there boy's. Drew's going to do alright learning of you fella!.
Thanks mate! Was a hard week...this week was so much harder though 😂 new episode Monday! He's a great lad! Trying my best to get him there 💪
Used be a hod carrier 3/1 feeling the pain of loading out 😥
You are a real credit sir !..
Cheers fella
Another great well informed upload.. Thank you for sharing and go for it you can do it.
Thanks Pete, greatly appreciated! New video this Monday 💪
