    Volkswagen’s GTI pretty much invented the “hot hatch” category when it debuted in 1976. And who doesn’t like the idea of a car that can easily carry enough for a weekend getaway while also offering the power, handling, and looks of a sports - or at least sporty - car? The 2018 GTI gets the bump to 210 hp that was reserved for the Sport trim in 2017 across the lineup, which is great, because that Sport trim is no longer available. The GTI isn’t as fast as the Golf R, which looks less potent but has an additional 70 hp, but it looks speedier and costs less.
    The 2018 GTI’s interior is more polished and better put together than the Ford Focus ST’s or the Subaru WRX’s. The base infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although our reviewer found the new bezel for the 8-inch touchscreen in the SE and Autobahn trims, which includes touch-capacitive buttons, problematic when wearing gloves or when bracing a hand for stability. I did buy the mk5 when it came out. I paid 23k. I’m in the USA. 2017 has been getting discounts from various reports. Never pay sticker for a GTI

    Love this hatch. Interior is very premium quality, the sound system is outstanding, sound is very insulated inside compared to other small hatches, it gets 34 MPG on the highway with a turbo charged engine. Gosh, I love it. A reallly fun daily driver, and funner to drive on the highway.

    I have the “perfect” MK7, a 2017 Sport. It has the performance pack, lighting pack and keyless entry. Picture a 2018 SE without the sunroof.
    Based on the comments around the new infotainment screen I am just as glad to “make do” with MIB2. The extra screen size seems to have gone into taking away the buttons on the side.
    Love all the new 2018 colors though....and the 6/72 warranty.

    Solid and clean review man. You made a few points about the Autobahn trim I didn't know about (Self Dimming Rearview & More seat adjustments). I'm pretty psyched to get the Autobahn trim since I really like the Fender audio and the Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS). I'm also somewhat skeptical about the new Infotainment systems lack of tactical buttons. The bigger screen will be nice but I think the functionality might suffer. I'm not really interested in all the forward collision warning, lane assist technology but it might be cool. I just don't like the thought of surrendering my attention and becoming reliant on technology do do things I should be doing. Sounds like it might be a recipe for disaster once you get used to this and then go back to a car that doesn't have this tech.

    There is no virtual cockpit gauge offer in top trim? Why does VW always downgrade their U.S models like it's second class citizens?

    • @vladimirgeorgiev3369
      @vladimirgeorgiev3369 6 лет назад +3

      A GTI in let's say Germany starts at around 38 000$. And you need to add a number of things to get it even with the US SE trim. And a car with the digital cockpit that requires the most expensive Nav system to go in, costs around 45 000$ in Europe. Don't get me started on BMWs and other premium brands, you will be amazed how cheap you are getting them.

    • @superhollowfied906
      @superhollowfied906 6 лет назад

      Y Brent it should be updated very soon. My guess the reason it hasn't been updated is to have customers clear out the 2017 Golfs that dealers have in inventory before orders can be placed for the 2018 Golfs.

      I'm wondering too. I'd been waiting since the debut of the Mk7.5 last December 2016. It's almost one year of waiting and I still can't "build my own" GTI at VW USA website because the pre-facelift Mk7 is still the one featured.😔

      I live near VW HQ in Herndon, VA and I went in there to ask when it would be coming to the website and they said it was confidential information... employees only. I'd say they're waiting for the entire Golf lineup to make it to dealers before putting it on the website; right now the GTI is the only one at dealerships.

    • @JM-xp7ot
      @JM-xp7ot 6 лет назад +2

      Aidan Anchaya the manual isn't great in this car, does not pop up like it should from reverse, you will end up feeling like you have to yank it up to be sure you go to 1st and aren't still in reverse. The dsg is also much stronger if you might do a tune down the road.

    I'm so tired of hearing hard plastic versus soft touch, bet the majority of people do not fondle or ogle the soft touch surfaces. Most drivers just touch the steering wheel, shift handle and radio knobs. Soft armrests are a concern..........................................

    • @tomeisenmenger7048
      @tomeisenmenger7048 6 лет назад +1

      There are lots of "inadvertent" touch points in a car. For instance, plenty of drivers (especially taller ones) rest their knee against the side of the center console while driving. Soft touch plastic at this point is much appreciated.

    Shitty review. He compared the regular Focus interior which isn't even the competitor of the gti se. The Ford Focus ST is the gti se competitor. Look up the interior of the Ford Focus ST and it easily surpasses the gti interior.

    • @timothygermann780
      @timothygermann780 6 лет назад +1

      Focus ST interior a little nicer but Its obviously looking to the boy racer demographic. Nowhere near the quality of VW. My issue with the review are the prices given. He said the Golf R is just a little more at $35-40,000 but I never seen an R for less than $42 to 43,000. A manual Autobahn can be had for a little over $32K in many dealerships. Nobody will budge on the Rs pricing because they are limited and everyone wants one. That's nearly a $10,000 dollar difference in the real world.
