    We light the wick replace the mantle on the brass unit, replaced the glass chimney over the fragile, mantle, We. Place the mantle that’s attached to the metal that’s attached to the chimney over the lift wick. The lit wick will burn the mental without it, damaging the product.

    Aladdin Lamps are (or were) wonderful BUT their new Mantles (The ones currently made in the Philippines) are short, extremely fragile, Far dimmer than the old ones made in Brazil with Thorium, are often hard to get for months at a time and Cost way too much ....I've always Loved these lanterns But with their crappy Mantles I would probably not recommend them to a friend anymore

    Ive never seen an Aladdin mantle with a pink coating, blue yes pink never... The problem is with new old stock mantles is somtimes people insist on taking them out of the box and putting their grubby fingers on the mantle part before you get them which causes them to fall apart when used...😕 The older ones are usually better mantles though. Nice lamp 👍

      I think it depended on what factory made the mantle, I've had both Pink and Blue coated mantles, but doesn't really change how it works... :)
      And yeah, I've had a few NOS mantles break apart prematurely, sucks given what people sell them for, but they are nicer colour mantles being Thorium based, the modern Yttrium ones just look too yellow for my tastes... :)

    I wonder why the manufacturer of Aladdin oil lamps say not to use paraffin?

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  Год назад

      Misuse of the English language; in North America, 'Paraffin' is a different product, and what we Brits call Paraffin (C1) is what they call Kerosene (K1), and what we call Kerosene is Heating oil (C2 here, known as K2 across the pond), so, it all gets confusing, so it's all just down to local language differences...

      @@TheRottenShed The difference between Brits as you call them and Americans is we haven't allowed government to disarm us. Our BB and pellet guns aren't even powered down. I feel soo sad for you guys not having rights.

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  Год назад

      Not entirely sure what armaments has to do with mantle lamps, but okay, just remember though, a sharpened pencil is just as deadly as a gun, can't ban them... ;)

    Generic mantle can be used but you have to burn the generic mantle for about 30 mins with pressurised kerosene lantern. Then the generic mantle can be used on Aladdin.

      And so how do you untie an ash bag from a pressure Lantern then retie it on to a mantle lamp?

      Yep, despite the mantle fault, I like it, doesn't need pressurising or anything, just light and it works... :D

    I have a few very old lamps but they don't have mantles, are they essential? Thanks

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  4 года назад

      For an Aladdin lamp, they can be run without a mantle, but it's not an optimal use of them, they work so much better with a mantle... :)

      Most kerosene lamps are not mantle lamps. There are only a few of which Aladdin is one. They were, and are the brightest, cleanest, and most fuel efficient lamps you can get. Probably that's why they're still in business.

      If it has two wicks its a Duplex burner or if it has a round wick it could be a Kosmos burner, older style burners, they don't use a mantle

      As for editing, had to hammer winderps movie maker hard to make it work, did screw up at the beginning, should have just been a fade-from-black, not a flip...

      I was going to recap it, but on Amiga.org there is a person who is doing amazing job... so he did it. I'm using oil lamps in my home afternoon... Amiga + oil lamps. There is something about it ;). Amiga Forever!

      Yeah, it's easier to have someone else recap them, on mine I had issues getting my iron in around the audio sockets, and of course melted the plastic on the back of them, hasn't damaged them, just looks a mess...

      I have actually question about you Aladdin lamp. How much fuel it takes/h comparing regular oil lamp?

    • @TheRottenShed
      @TheRottenShed  7 лет назад

      On a full tank (about 1 litre, give or take) it can last about 10-12 hours continuously running (depending on brightness level), I've not really compared it to a regular oil lamp as the only ones in this house have old gucked up wicks that are no good and I haven't bothered to get new ones, I'm guessing they'd run for about the same time, but, the difference is the mantles, they produce a lot more light so you get more out of the fuel than you would with a regular lamp... :)
