    The fact that both of the endings both result in the downfall of the protagonist fits well with the irony you’re bringing up. It adds to the dark undertone to this game.

    It seems to me such a missed opportunity that the term "fans" is mentioned while all these cult analogies have been drawn, but you neglect the fact that the definition of "fan" as you use it is a recent American term derived from "fanatic" which has significantly more explicit religious and political connotations.

    Something I think a lot of gamer fans would love to see you analyze is the Metal Gear Solid series, or even the developer's upcoming game Death Stranding (there've already been countless analyses on the trailers so far). The creator, Hideo Kojima, is a major Kubrick fan, his favourite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey, and has plenty of Kubrick references and visual symbolism in his games. He is a very divided game developer but I think he is a treasure for people who like analysis and discovering layers.

    One theme that seems to work quite well for me in FC5 is that the game is set in purgatory just after the helicopter crashes and you are there to redeem your sins to enter Eden, I have found several things in the game that reinforce my belief.

      @@getstickbuggedlol6085 Oh boy, it's gonna be hard since I'm going by memory and it's more than 2 years since I played it...
      Found no hard evidence as far as I can remember, just "hints", but here what I recall at the moment, sorry if it's not much:
      first of all, the game is set in Montana, in the Divine Comedy by Dante, Purgatory is a mountain, this is the first of a decent number of parallels to the Divine Comedy as I recall; there's also a guy named Virgil in the prison (Virgil was the guide to Dante and he was forced to stay in Limbo);
      you can find several newspaper pages where "accidents" happened linked to your companions, like the pilot companion crashing his plane but in the game he's fine and the plane is still intact;
      I recall some NPC straight up saying that maybe they died and they are all in purgatory, if I'm not mistaken it's the deputy taken hostage by Jacob after you save him;
      *Spoilers for the ending below*
      *Spoilers for the ending*
      the ending is also wierd; nukes explode just because you didn't do as Joseph says? The way I see it, defying Joseph it's the last sin the protagonist commits, a sin of pride, causing to "transform" Purgatory into Hell so the Deputy is damned for eternity... or until Far Cry New Dawn, which follows a different theme.
      Again, sorry if it's not a lot to "prove" my theory, but I haven't picked the game up in years.

    Watching this video I couldn’t help but attempt to defend my character, that being said you are right, it is cult like, and you also mentioned that not all cults are bad or good. But you didn’t mention this; shooting at NPCs or pointing weapons at NPC’s makes them turn on you. If this was truly a cult similar to rival Joesph’s then they wouldn’t fight back. In fact I did testing and every single time I shot an innocent 10/10 a hunter or white-tail (the resistance) wouldn’t hesitate to point their gun at me.

      M WHITE Lol, not sure what makes you think I don't play these games. Been gaming since I was about 9 yrs old on the old Atari 2600 and even worked as an animator for a games company in my 20's so have experienced the behind the scenes development aspects.
      I still play tons of games - recent ones include Subnautica, The Forest, The Witness, Legend of Grimrock 1 & 2, Kingdom Come Deliverance etc. I've talked about the Far Cry games before, was a huge fan of the first game when it came out and have played them all since except Far Cry Primal. The only one I haven't completed is Far Cry 2.
      The game play footage in this video is recorded from my own play through. Captured some of the cut scenes from other sources simply because FC5 doesn't allow more than one save game so I'd have to play through the whole story again to capture the scenes I''m after. And my GTA V game analysis vids use footage from my own play through.
      Hope that clues you in as to where I'm actually at with gaming ;)

    I think Ubisoft trying to make lightning strike twice with another charismatic antagonist like Vaas has been tripping them up for years. They try to make these posh, methodical principal foes, completely forgetting they rewrote the story because the auditioning actor practically kicked down the door and made the role (and story) his through his energetic and intense performance.
    That the developer would lack self awareness about the protagonist leading a cult of their own to fight Eden's Gate is par for the course. They've been making Video Game: The Game for a long time now, with their main three franchises blending in together with only the faintest distinction between them.

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  6 лет назад +9

      Yes Vas was great in FC3. I also liked the second villain in the game too but he hardly ever gets a mention. Pagan Mihn was great except, as was widely pointed out he needed to be in the story more. As for Joseph Seed I thought the actor who played him did a sterling job. The problem is in the scripting of the cult. Their pathology isn't believable.

    The setting of the game is so clearly evocative of Waco and ruby ridge that it’s natural to expect a commentary on those events and that ideology. By drawing the setting so clearly from those things but not talking about them the game wants the power and intrigue they gain from that but none of the responsibility. I don’t mind that far right Islam isn’t addressed because the game does call back to that group at all

      Nononono, see what you’re missing is that when playing the game, they want you to potentional be sympathetic to the cult and their ideas, to get across the point of how people can join cults and how paranoia plays into it all. The main games theme is paranioa, not religion. It just used religion as one of the storytelling devices to get across its themes of paranioa and seeking comfort. Listen to their propaganda. Listen to the outside news broad casts. Talk to the civilians. Think about the bliss. Is what you’re seeing real? What is the truth to it all? What part of the picture am I missing? Why are there so many bunkers, why so many letters and voice mails left that ooze paranioa what were written or left right before the cults take over? Its not about religion or cults, the game is about paranioa and YOU the player

      @@yuripantyhose4973 you would also have to change the setting and islamic extremism is more applicable to european, african and asian issues of terrorism more than the US.
      MW2019 covered such extremism and took likeness from the attacks on london and while it was controversial it wasnt cancelled.
      Doing such a campaign without being innaccurately insensitive or naively oversimplifying context is incredibly difficult and would be career suicide for many game devs which is why im surprised the cod devs went for it in 2019.

    Your videos on video games always remind me how poor game criticism tends to be, most people don't really try to analyse how narrative and mechanics feed on each other.
    And this analysis makes me think that the theme of player character as God often shows up in games:
    - In Half-Life 2 the player character is treated as a messiah by the NPCs that follow him, mostly because of his seemingly super-natural military feats.
    - In Skyrim you play as literal the reincarnation of a god, and so the endless power escalation makes sense. Funny thing is that the antagonist is also an aspect of the same god.
    - In Undertale the player is God, and the character you control is a Jesus-like avatar that's pre-destined to save the underworld (the game) from a Satan-like figure.

  • @nessunamore
    @nessunamore 6 лет назад +9

    I think that you missed the message of the game. Midway during my play through I realized that the cult was operating the same way that Daesh (ISIS) does in the middle east. Quite brilliant really. What would happen if we took what these miscreants are doing in the sandbox across the world and repackage it in Judaea Christian philosophy and set it in heartland America? As such its easily digested. Given the erosion to the values that built western culture there is in a definitely a totalitarian monster in my shadows. So some of what was communicated in the game was seductive. But you cant bring freedom or faith at the end of a sword. I appreciated the juxtaposition of the talk of salvation with the wholesale slaughter of people that choose to think a different way. The disconnect between what the cult says they want and what they wrought is jarring intentionally if the player chooses to look.

    • @collativelearning

    After thoroughly analysing far cry 3 and seeing interviews from the lead writer, I strongly disagree that your interpretation was not deliberate. A similar theme is seen in both games with the player becoming the very thing they have been fighting against. You need to realise that, just as in FC3, what the writer intends and the employees state in press releases do not always correlate.

    A more useful definition of cult is one based on the *BITE* model.
    Behavior control
    Information control
    Thought control
    Emotional control
    Look at old.freedomofmind.com/Info/BITE/bitemodel.php for more detail on each of those pillars.
    With that criteria we can more easily set cults apart from other beliefs, groups and identities. That's not to say that your overarching analysis is wrong, I don't think that it is. I'm just making a semantic argument because I think that we do need a word to distinguish a very particular type of 'cult-like' group behavior.

    I'm new to your channel but I find your proposal that most power fantasy media could be interpreted as "building a cult" a really interesting premise. What do you think about narratives where the protagonist is caught up in events that have little political or ethical implications to there character. I've recently replayed Red Dead Redemption and the central character of john marston jumped to mind while watching your vid. His distrust and disdain of the people/government propelling his actions and his empathy towards those he guns down makes him a very special protagonist in video games

    if you haven't played farcry 3 i'd highly recommend it
    the main villian of the game (VASS), is set up to be the polar opposite of the protaganist but as the game goes on the similarities between the two are more obvious.
    the protaganist starts off as a normal everyday young adult but when he lands on rook island(the setting for farcry 3 and the land that vass and his militia/pirates take over.) he's immediately
    free to do what ever he wants, which is usually shooting the local militia/pirates and after an extended period of time his sanity is starting to deteriorate from the environment.
    thus becoming the villian he struggled so hard to kill (depending on which ending you choose.)
    ubisoft takes a more in your face approach with this idea though, i mean the title/start screen is just a continuous loop of a Rorschach test.
    far cry 4 does something diffrent by screwing with the player by having the 2 main rebel faction being portrayed as more altruist and whats best for the game world but in the end they are show to be just as capable of atrocities as the main villian of the game. ironically the villian of the game has a secret ending that results in "possibly" far less bloodshed...less being none
    theres also a link between the actual player and the protagonist. that being both parties are completely ignorant to the way that the environment their about to enter works and because of that they willfully go off with the rebels to beat the big bad evil FACIST...only to usher in a less organized system of facism...that required thousands of lives to be lost.
    be aware that to experience either story you would have to quit your job and register as a fulltime Ubisoft "Tower Climber".

      Yes I've played through FC 3 about 3 times. I love it, and Blood Dragon was great too. FC 4 had great game play as usual. Story didn't impress me quite as much, but then my fave of the series is the very first game which had a story written by someone of an IQ below 75 .. but the punishing gameplay was great. Each level was the equivalent of liberating one massive outpost. It was a very tough game.

      Far Cry as a series has honestly been pretty interesting overall. Even Predator I found fun, if not engaging story wise.
      2 was excellent in the gameplay department and the story was also quite interesting.
      I think that the most important thing about the games is definitely the stories, even though I have several qualms about the writing itself they challenge the expectations of a player in what feels like unique ways for open-world games.
      I really hope that New Dawn keeps this up with its story and characters.

    Cult vs Culture. You say tomato, I say tomato.
    If one really wants to leave their cult(ural) beliefs behind them, they should "convert" to radical agnosticism. It's a good starting point to actual knowing, instead of believing.
    Although there is a downside: at the end of the day, there's only so much we can know. It's probably why beliefs are so popular.
    P.s.: here's a game you might enjoy (analysing): "Detroit: Becoming Human". Great story, with lots of moral decisions to be made by the player. Haven't actually played it myself, but saw a play-through by a Twitch streamer, which had my tear ducts acting up multiple times.

    I think context matters as to who is seen as a Cultist. Here in America if you're like Joseph Seed or David Karesh you are indeed a Cultist, but change things around, say I take my Atheistic ass to Saudi Arabia or Iran and spread the good word of "There Is NO God" and I will become an Enemy of the State / Cultist in a heartbeat. Meaning that whatever prevailing system/culture/way of life is challenged by a small/fringe minority, that group can and would be seen as a Cult.
    Edit: To add more to my comment, even now on Twitter I see both Liberals and Conservatives occasionally referring to each other as "Cultists", which would perhaps be somewhat truthful since both groups do Double-Down on their political parties rather than form other political parties. Here in America we have TWO monolithic political parties, unlike many other countries which have many more parties to choose from, reinforcing the notion that here in America we dont really "Choose" our Political Parties, we merely just settle for the group to spite the other group, like a Cult.

I tend to edit all my vids at NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps so have been recording these clips at those rates as I hadn't decided if I'd be mixing it with footage of me talking into my video camera. Sometimes I get a flicker problem with capture probably due to the mismatch between frame rate in game and frame rate in my capture software. Hope it wasn't too distracting. Thanks :)

    In regards to cults versus truth. I think you missed the point on "the figurehead." Different religions are challenged by their ideas and consistency. Not figureheads. What ever seems to be the most consistent is what matches up to reality and ends up being what exists. One other thing, This game isn't about Christian Extremism. This game is Closer resembling mormons becoming militant

    I totally get your cult analysis & do not disagree with that analysis, but many things plague me about, more specifically, Far Cry 5 itself that's unaddressed here.
    I find it interesting that both the Father and the Deputy represent saviors. The father has begun the reeping to save the people of Hope County from the apocalypse he sees coming, but the Deputy is trying to save people from the father's reeping. In the end, neither "savior" has saved anyone... only themselves.
    And this is interesting in terms of how we seek saviors in politics, personal relationships, and religion of course. But, in truth, no-one can save us but ourselves.
    Far Cry 5 and the subsequent New Dawn had the potential of providing a truly great story, but I feel like the writers were competing with each other, which sometimes lead to unfortunate contradictions & an overall confused narrative.
    New Dawn exacerbated this as it seemed to be more of an apology to Far Cry 5 players for ending the game in a no-win, and basically shredded the story of Far Cry 5 in the process.
    For instance, we get the sense throughout Far Cry 5 that Joseph knows the outcome and that it will end with only Joseph & the Deputy. From "only you" to Joseph's warning John his sin will come in the form of another and kill John to Jacob saying "everything he (Joseph) said you would do you've done" to Faith saying, "You'll be the one to decide how this all ends," and even the Marshall suggesting "Everyone knows why you're here..." This implies prophetic knowledge.
    Yet, Joseph is so shocked as his family dies and the deputy keeps battling him against his reeping. If Joseph knew the outcome from the start, as the game more than implies, he never should've began the reeping in the first place.
    But I really loved the complexity of the Father's character & the potential for what could've been had the writers been on the same page.

      Oh, how I'd like a remake of the original Far Cry by Crytek, with the current gen stuff... Far Cry is one of my all time favourite videogames, and while I played 2 and 3, those are not Far Cry games for me. I dropped the series about there. Why? Because the first one was a challenging but relatively fair tactical shooter/survival horror game, where real life tactics I saw or read about elsewhere actually worked. The AI was smart without cheating. The level design was good. Sure, the story was simple and repetitive, but the gameplay was, and still is top notch. And then Crytek left. I wouldn't go as far as Ubisoft's continuation of the franchise gave us bad games, as it is down to personal preference... But they are not in the same spirit IMHO. Not Far Cry.

      Yep, FC 1 was magnificent. The enemies varied throughout the game, unlike in the newer games - just more guys but with better guns and more armour. Sure they have the odd animal, but they could go much more wild with that. FC1 also did that tropical island setting well in advance of FC 3. On first playthrough stepping out of the cave at the start of the game into that lush vast environment was pure WOW factor.

    “The scenario Far Cry 5 have set up is more comparable to that of Islamists.”
    Yeah, this game had me rolling my eyes. What is the real world comparison between this event in the US? (The Viper militia? Waco?) I can’t believe that the makers of the game didn’t realize that the Christian Right in the United State doesn’t behave like this at all. I wonder why they didn’t make a game about the US’s problem of Leftist terrorism from Antifa and Anarcho Commies which have cost 100s of millions of dollars in damage or even Islamic Terrorism which is a Global phenomenon.

    • @Baychimo
      @Baychimo 6 лет назад +18

      You have no problem with a game that would portray leftists, anti-fascist, communists, anarchists and islamists as "evil", but if anyone dares to mention christianity or right-wing... oh, then you get upset. Sounds like you're too biased and too hypocritical to be objective, so I won't even try to have a rational discussion about anything related to that. Here's something you might understand though: it's a game, it's fiction, get over it.

    • @assbread5950
      @assbread5950 6 лет назад +8

      I agree....I would LOVE a far cry game set in the middle-east, with Islamic terrorists as the primary antagonists. it would be a great return to the believable, gritty, scary style of far cry 2.

    • @MCCrleone354
      @MCCrleone354 6 лет назад +4

      Baychimo
      “No problem portraying leftists, commies, antifascists and islamists as evil.” I dont care if they portray them as “evil” but they are not living by good ideas. Can we agree on that? (Btw they are NOT “antifacists”, that self adopted phrase is nothing but projection. Antifa support a centralized state to redistribute wealth and have used disruption and violence against people who they deem as opponents. You can’t be an anarchist and support wealth redistribution, it is a violation of the nonaggression principle.)
      “As soon as Christians get brought up”
      I am not being irrational when I point out the out of touch nature of sensationalizing rare terrorism from Christians. For starters, where in the US has there ever been a cult in which people baptize others by shoving their heads in water nearly drowning them? (This same ridiculous motif showed up in Bioshock Infinite) Terrorism Is a real problem in the world and this kind of “well muh Christians do it TOO... sometimes” Political Correctness is restricting accurate portrayal of who is committing the terrorism in art.
      Not all religions are the same. Who would you rather have a beer with?: Jesus or Mohammad.
      As soon as anyone dares mention “right wing”
      The scale of so called “right wing” extremism compared to left wing extremism and Jihadism in just the last 10 years isn’t the same. In the US OR in Europe. (I don’t consider Neo Nazis to be “right wingers” as they support the same economy controlling state that commies do, so they are Ostensibly just leftists that sound meaner)
      Leftist protests + Time= violence
      Occupy Wall Street - 400+ felony arrests
      DNC directing people to start fights at their opponents rallies.
      The emergence of “by any means necessary.”
      “It’s fiction, get over it”
      It’s inaccurate fiction, I am not wrong in my criticism of that? If the largely civil Christian Right get portrayed as Violent drug using Cultists someone is going to correctly accuse that of straw manning. DEAL with it.
      “I can’t have a rational conversation with someone who ain’t objectavamative”
      You don’t even know me nor have you tried. You typed ONE comment and you are hoping that I don’t respond.
      “You are biased and Hypocritical”
      I have said nothing hypocritical. And no, My libertarian biases have nothing to do with seeing a pattern of which ideologues are causing the most damage and which ones are receiving comparatively favorable coverage by the media.

    • @purdster83

      MCCrleone354
      - well said. It's tough to have these discussions nowadays, especially when one side (I'll not point fingers specifically, but I hope my intent gets across anyways) is so quick to jump on viciousness, violence and slander - to the point of attempting to ruin people's lives and livelihoods rather than take an objective view for the sake of discourse. Keep slogging through, things surely can't remain as fractured as they are forever... can they?
      "so I won't even try to have a rational discussion about anything related to that" - that, right there, has been the go-to response over and over and over again. I see it here, there, anywhere with an open discussion portion available to the public. I'm willing to bet you dollars to donuts that, should they reply, it gets nasty and personal with the quickness.
      To wrap it back around to the subject at hand, Far Cry, "have I ever told you what the definition of insanity is?"

    You conveniently ignore the word 'religion' from the dictionary definition of cult.

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  6 лет назад +1

      Ignore? I spoke of religion and the promise of immortality in the video and said I might make a separate video on the religious connotations.

    • @deviljam4
      @deviljam4 6 лет назад

      Collative Learning you mentioned it once, and then go on to apply it generally to things that are specially not religions. Maybe a better word would have been 'extremist'.

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  6 лет назад

      So I didn't actually ignore it. The dictionary definition given includes several descriptions, some of which are not religion-specific. I also provided examples in the video of the word cult being applied to followers of specific politicians. Those examples aren't religious either. I wasn't saying that I personally believe the word cult is applicable to all those contexts, but that the word is frequently misused, sometimes deliberately. Sure we could insert "extremist" interchangeably with some of the examples, but it's not a label I tend to use either as it's also a vague term. E.g. Are indulgers of "extreme" sports "extremist"?

    • @deviljam4
      @deviljam4 6 лет назад

      The word extremist is still useful, it implies a certain amount of danger in any context (with the exception of 90s radical kids cartoons). A sports extremist gives a clear idea of the kind of life-threatening activity involved. A religious extremist or a political extremist does the same. But it's not just a semantic problem I have, I think you're using the word "cult" to build a bad argument. I think pointing out rhetorical use of the word is fine, but you weirdly expand on the word as a basis of stranger argument: "So essentially I could be called a member of the cult of democracy", except you wouldn't. For one because democracy is a concept not an organisation, two because it's not a religion, and three a cult by the definition you supplied is something unusual to the rest of society. You are attempting to broadening the meaning of the word 'cult' to catch in more acceptable ideas, which feels like an attempt to normalise strange and (implied) dangerous cults. I don't actually believe you think cults are good, I assume what you're actually saying is we should be suspicious of rhetorical labels. But the argument conflates ideas with specific organisation, the important difference being an idea is an abstract, but an organisation can be held accountable for its specific practices. In short, dying to protect democracy or your family is not the same thing as dying because your priest told you to.
      As an aside, the non-religious second definition is the more causal definition "A cult classic", and isn't to be taken as part of the first and intended meaning.

    • @collativelearning
      @collativelearning  6 лет назад +1

      Democracy is an organisation in that it requires a ballot system which has to be set up by a functional government. Without that structure democracy cannot exist. Also you're confusing unusual and acceptable ideas. They're not always in opposition to each other. If a cult takes over and runs a society - like ISIS or the Commies then it becomes the accepted norm, but I don't see that the word cult is any more or less definable.
      We're sort of agreed in that yes I'm suspicious of rhetorical labels. I'd be inclined to sort of agree with your definition of cults, but not everyone would. So i don't think such labels are useful, they don't facilitate communication between groups. They just serve to separate.
