Very helpful and informative. My husband and I are 51 yrs old and we're interested in river cruising. I was charmed by your uniworld review until I saw the dinner plans. If I have to dine with strangers, it's a deal breaker for me. Bummer.

Thank you so much for watching. I hate that you feel that way. I am an introvert and thought I would hate it. By the end of the cruise it was my favorite part. We made so many friends.

Thanks Thia, this is a repeat of what we went through last late October. We had been on 30 Ocean Cruises, like you, all over the world, and this was our first river cruise. We used Avalon (never again) . We took a ten day cruise starting in Prague (bus to Regensburg) on the Danube and then Vienna and Budapest with two minor stops, one of which we went to Salzburg). I would have like overnights but on a lot of river cruises this does not happen. How can you be in Vienna without an overnight??? But we were going to be overnight in Budapest, out last stop and this would make up for it.NOT. The Danube was not passable to Budapest. It was our understanding that they would bus us to Budapest and they would put us up in a hotel and we would still have an overnight. NOT. They screwed us and went as far as the could, which was about 2.5 hrs out of Budapest in the middle of nowhere. They would take us in and back to Budapest and then the same to the airport the next day. Well it was a complete disaster. We did very minor sightseeing and then the dropped us off downtown near the covered market at about 11 am and told us the last bus back to nowhere would leave at 4. Everyone was scared Sh-tless as they were afraid to miss the bus to nowhere and most tried to take the early bus back at 1.30 and they only had one. The rest had to wait for another which was way late. We took the four pm bus, praying it would actually be there. So it was a pathetic experience. And the next day was worse. It took us 3.5 hrs to get to the airport and we were lucky we made our plane. And I agree the rooms on the river ships are way too small and ours was even smaller. I think the best starter river cruise is Vienna to Budapest or vica versa. You get over nights and wont have the low river level problems we had. But it was too late for us. If we would have been on Tauck or Uniworld this would not have happened to us. And I got flamed big time for bashing Avalon on their facebook group page. Sheesh. Best wishes.

I am so sorry this happened to you. Although Uniworld has a very good reputation, some of my fellow cruisers took the Uniworld airport transfer and they said it was a complete debacle. I am sorry to hear about your trip. I will let you know how Ama Waterways is.

@@travelingwiththia Thanks Thia. Live and let learn. Will read your reviews with interest as I always do. I think thats it for us and river cruises. My wife was reticent to go on one in the first place and now she absolutely wont. But we have always been on our own in Europe except for regular cruises so its no great shakes for us. Will update you on our August Adriatic on the Viva. NCL did a nice job of booking our transatlantic flights and I was very pleasantly surprised as I have always done this myself. Best wishes. PS We have been all over the world by ourselves. Southern Africa (and we will never do this again) and twice all over Asia including Nepal and India and had no problems there.

Going to Asia on my own scares me. I have heard they are wonderful safe countries but with the language being so different from ours it worries me a bit. Especially with my food allergies. It is why we love cruising. It is a safe place for me to eat.
River and Ocean cruising are so different. I can’t see repeating a River cruise but I try to do an ABC cruise every year.

@@travelingwiththia You are right. If you have food allergies or other related issues you cant do this. The last night we were in Zambia, I made the mistake of going to a local show with a buffet. But the show was so good I went. I ate some crocodile or something like that and I think it wasnt cooked properly and got sick. Going home we were facing three successive flights of three hours, eight hours and then fifteen hours. I knew I could not make it used my last resort which was Tylenol x tra strength and thank god it saved me. It took us 43 hours of non stop travel from Cape Town to Miami and then home in the rush hour. Should not have done this and never again. We did have good travel insurance but you just dont want to be sick in a third world country period. Never again. Really if I was smart I would have bought some broad spectrum antibiotic tablets and maybe Ill do this in the future but I fully agree with you. Pam got real sick in Thailand once up in the mountains and we almost did not make it back home. But we are getting too old for this. Thank God. I will say this, the night market in Chang Mai Thailand up in the mountains was one of the most incredible things Ive ever seen and it went on for more than a mile. She would up with a campilo bacter dejuni bacterial infection and barely made it home. Sheesh. Never again.

You guys are so adventurous. It is scary being sick in a country you don’t speak the language. Years ago when I was a flight attendant, I broke my toe in Milan. Back then I didn’t speak Italian and I refused to go to the hospital. I had to work the flight home in pain, but at least it was something minor. What Pam went through sounds scary. How many countries have you been to?

Highly overrated, much better ships on much better prices you can find. Uniworld gives high comission to the travel agents and they push poor clients to go for it. Be aware - it's too boring for young people. Frozen food presented as local market, staff is east european low level, bad English. Check your luggage for missing items before you leave - happens often in Uniworld.

We were on the ship shown and in Venice one year ago this week and were very happy with the staff. Everyone was friendly and attentive. We travelled in a group of 11. The wait staff took the initiative to reserve adjacent tables for us. Service was excellent. Very good local entertainment each evening.
