Um no, her tone was not forced. She had a darker tone in her earlier years, in the albums and live performances. Her tone (and overall voice) naturally changed to a lighter tone after 1993. In the beginning she had a natural darker rich tone to her voice. It's always been there.

Her tone/voice is much brighter and definitely isn't anywhere near that dark. She sounded absolutely phenomenal and incredible, nonetheless.
