      How did you find PT's to shadow? And working as an pt aide counts as both shadowing and observational hours, right? Also, why did you decide to become a PT? Why are you passionate about it? You think the salary is worth the schooling and future income, etc.? How much do you think an fresh grad should be making? Is it much different than the PA route? How old are you btw?! Thanks in advance!

      Awesome video! Thank you. You mentioned that it doesn't matter what B.S. I have, when applying for the DPT program? So that means I can have any major in addition to the pre-requisites and then move on with the rest of the requirements?

    I found this video very useful! I started as a Kinesiology major but I noticed that the major was much too tough for me. Combined with the prereq's, I knew I would never be successful in getting the competitive 3.5-4.0 GPA. I just switched to psychology! Good to know your major doesn't matter! :D

    Hey Tony! Thank you for the video! I found it very informative and beneficial! I'm currently in undergraduate school taking major class as a Exercise Science Major. Your video was extremely useful for me in that I can set goals and have a vision to achieve and look towards. Thanks for that man! BTW, Love your workout videos! True motivation! Anyways, I wanted to ask what D.P.T colleges would you recommend going to in each State?

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад +1

      James, i'm glad that you found this video helpful, and thank you for the support!
      To answer your question, that's tough for me to say because I simply haven't researched every DPT school to give you a good answer. However, I will say that if your state has a program, usually you have a better shot at getting into an in state program (and usually cheaper unless it's private), or at least in region than far out of state.

    Thank you for the video, great infos! I'm gonna get my AS degree this May and there's a chance I might take the year off to work and save money. Would that be a smart move? I mean would they penalize me for that if I decide to do so? Also how hard was the GRE and what subjects is it on? Which year should I take it? Sorry for bombarding you of questions lol I'm an international student and I'm still a little bit confused about all the requirements and the steps to take. Thank you so much!

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад

      I wouldn't say the decision would be smart or dumb! It just depends on your situation and if you need time off for whatever reason, then by all means take it.
      The GRE in my personal opinion is a ridiculous standardized exam that I found difficult and not really measuring accurately one's ability to do well in a program. The GRE has a quantitative section, verbal, and written.
      Be sure subscribe to my PT blog that I created as a lot of your questions and i'm sure incoming questions as you progress through this journey will be answered on there.

    I have 2.9 overall gpa (community college and university). I went through a funk in CC that caused me to not try and fail in classes, and made my gpa super low. But when i transferred and finally found my groove, my University gpa was like a 3.1, and raised my overall gpa to what it is now. And my pre-req gpa is like a 3.1-3.2. Is it possible to get into PT school with this? I plan on taking the GRE, currently work at a PT clinic, and plan to do more observation hours.

    What should I become when I grow up? I'm thinking about a personal trainer or a physical therapist? What classes and studies should I be taking in college? Also what requires more school and studies?

    • @Moving2Korea
      @Moving2Korea 6 лет назад +1

      Personal trainers generally don't make a ton of money. You'll need to go an entrepreneurial route to make a living. Otherwise, working at a commercial gym, with horrible hours, probably a split shift, you'll make 20-35K at best after a painful first year where you are just there to learn. Physical therapy is much more respected. They definitely get paid well.With that said the ceiling for a personal trainer is much higher. You could potentially make 6 figures if you set up a proper business. Physical therapists rarely make 6 figures, but the average income for a PT is much MUCH higher than a personal trainer. There is much more to consider than just that but is a big factor to consider.

  • @PinoyKcin

    I think another good tip for applying, for people who are interested, is the distance you are from family/loved ones. Some people may get home sick, or may/may not like the area they will be studying in for 3ish years. On top of that, the price of schooling, if something is your passion, don't let a price tag hold you back for what you wanna do for your dream career.
    People may be wonder "well how much is PT school?" depends on university, I know some privates upwards 100k-200k for the whole program lmao

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад

      ***** PT was my first route in undergrad, I switched from pre-PT to nursing (working in the field, i got a better feeling to what I wanted to do). I am the one that mentioned I am applying for the 2018 nursing cycle!

    • @Canttouchme96
      @Canttouchme96 7 лет назад

      Elijah B What made you want to do nursing? I'm a freshman in college right now and I'm changing my major to kinesiology with a pt track in a few weeks, although, I have thought about nursing in the past. Is the nursing path easier academically? Because I know that the pt path is pretty rigorous and that kind of makes me feel unsure

    • @PinoyKcin
      @PinoyKcin 7 лет назад

      Canttouchme96 as I mentioned above, I worked in a clinic alongside all health professions, i felt that my calling was nursing and not as a PT. You should volunteer/shadow to figure out what you have an interest in.
      Academically its all still pretty hard, theres no shortcuts. If you're doing it for how easy it is, then I dont think its something youre passionate about. find what you like

  • @michaelcosta3546

    I'm a junior with a 3.6 overall GPA and a 3.4 in the exercise science major.. I'm taking the majority of the pre req classes now and i'm most likely getting A's and B's. So my major GPA will most likely get higher. How are my chances? Also how much should I worry about price when applying?

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад

      Definitely look for schools where you can attend for lower pricing. Those are usually the ones in state public schools, or at least in region where you may receive reciprocity. I would avoid private schools unless that's all you get accepted into.
      Your stats look right around what average would be, so shoot for a good score on the GRE and have well written essays + everything else.

      Yes... shadowing hours are observation hours. As I stated in the video, most schools want 2+ settings. The hospital, is ONE setting. You'd need one or more after the hospital.
      Shadowing - 85 hours outpatient, 20 hours inpatient acute care.
      GPA - 3.9 Cumulative, 3.86 pre requisite
      GRE 149V, 149Q, 3.5 Writing

    I was pre-PT all through my first three years of college, until recently I switched to pre-PA. In my honest opinion the three years of expensive schooling was not worth the salary of making just over an RN. If you really do have a deep passion to be a physical therapist than go for it but it is not necessarily an avenue which will reward you graciously for all of your hard work.

      I actually debated on PA myself, but decided not to go that path because I would enjoy being a PT 100x more.

      Great video Tony, good luck on getting into schools man...
      I feel like PT gives you more of an opportunity to build a brand or company, which allows you (if it's something you're interested in) to start your own clinic, gym, or company within physical therapy which will definitely reward you for your work. Personally, making above 6 figures is a career goal of mine which isn't crazy, but isn't common as a PT. I'm also not trying to be stuck in a clinic treating old people's hips my whole career lol. I'm working on getting my CSCS now but I also want to eventually get my MBA and open up a gym that focuses more on training high level athletes while also providing treatment as a physical therapist. I don't know much about being a PA but I feel as though there aren't as many avenues to create revenue or build a brand on your own in different types of health care fields. Sure, the money might be better out of school, but I'd rather not be a slave to a company or hospital working a 9-5 all damn day. I'm trying to think bigger than estimated salaries on salary.com 😂

      Andrew Gold Good point. But you really do have to break down the schooling aspect, as well. More money is going to be poured into PT school (an additional year)... it is also even more competitive that PA. As far as building a brand or company, I think a DPT degree is overkill. Any personal trainer with a national certification of corrective exercise holds just as much weight as a PT in the consumer's eye (because they don't know the difference).

    Can you become a PT later in life? I'm in my late 20's & very curious about the profession. But the price for a re-education seems exorbitant. Is it worth it?

    • @ShearnKunal
      @ShearnKunal 7 лет назад +2

      I would say very much so worth it. I am currently in PT school now and some of my classmates are in their early 30s and some in their 40s and a couple in their 50s. I am only 22. So I would say it is never too late! If it's your passion, pursue it!

    I made a mistake and went into a biomedical science major and this major is so hard i could barely get any A's and i make more C's and it really because it effected my GPA but I really want to get into a PT school and I am scared that they won't accept me because of my GPA.
    Before I transfered to university I was in college and I took the majority of the classes required for PT school there and I done really well on those classes and have A's and B's and then I got those classes transfered when I went to university.
    Do you think PT school would calculate my GPA based on the classes I took at University with that biomedical science or the prereq I did for PT school at college?
    Also, how did you get the opportunity to shadow a PT? .. did you search up PT clinics and asked them if you can?
    Thank you!

    • @aramos92
      @aramos92 7 лет назад +1

      There are two GPAs that schools look at. The cumulative GPA and the prerequisite GPA. Yes, your cumulative GPA includes all the classes you have taken. This includes the classes you took at the university level and the classes you took before you transferred. The prerequisite GPA only consists of the prerequisite courses. If you know which schools you are interested in I suggest you research the average accepted GPA that is admitted into the program. This will give you an idea on how competitive your GPA is.
      As for your second question. You are correct. Look up PT clinics and go ask if they accept volunteers or if you can do observational hours. That's how I got mine.
      Hope I helped.
      Good luck!

    Is high school a good time to start volunteering and observing?

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад +8

      I would say just volunteer/shadow once or twice to see what the profession entails. Other than that no need to start till your junior year of college.

      Tony Do thanks for the reply. I'm a junior in high school right now and I have nothing to do so I think I do want to volunteer like full time till college. Will having a ton of hours and starting early help me out a lot? Also are high school grades important? Thank you!

      Meek MiLL i did not end up pursing this. I am now a business major. The reason why I didn’t is because the schools around me are very hard to get into. It’s not that I don’t believe in myself, i wanted to take a safer route.

    • @PinoyKcin
      @PinoyKcin 7 лет назад

      no they have a different program. main difference is that PTA do not get to do evals, and all their treatments that they do usually need to be cosigned by a PT.
      You can either volunteer (free), or get an internship (free/paid) depending on the company/hospital

    • @BrodyFitnessLife

      PTA is just an associate degree which requires no previous school other than high school. I believe Tony's income is mainly from RUclips. Usually observations are unpaid.

      Lewis Garnett - I'm beginning PT school this upcoming summer. The program will be three years long and I was in undergrad for 4.5, so a total of 7.5 years.

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад

      Lewis Garnett - I did not minor in anything, and why wouldn't it be worth it in the end? It's what I set out to achieve and the career is still growing quickly with a great outlook, great pay, and basically 100% secure job stability because you can find a job anywhere you go. Not to mention job satisfaction!

    • @TonyDo
      @TonyDo  7 лет назад

      Lewis Garnett - oh really? To be honest with all of my research I haven't seen any schools that "require" a minor for the DPT program. Maybe yours specifically does though.
