      Thanks. That shelter system (minus the Jeep), manpack, and the coffee/cook system is literally my man portable gear that goes with me in my ruck. The manpack radio alternates between the FT-8900 and FT-818ND. There will be more on the 818 as I'll be getting back into HF and starting an NVIS series next month. Glad you enjoyed it. Welcome to the channel, Robert. At least there's a healthy backlog of 180 videos to watch if you get bored. (They're not all winners). The 40 bags went quickly and no one has seen the finally prototype, myself included. The black manpack was the previous iteration. If the bags work out and people are happy, I'll find a way to scale up the operation and produce a larger second batch in January. I'm delighted that you enjoy the content. I almost closed the channel late last year due to time constraints at work, but glad that I kept it going for viewers like yourself. Take it easy.

    Nice work buddy! I think the video turned out great and the content is worthwhile. The point of interest for me was how you could maintain your chest rig for audio comms all while tearing down and setting up your digital field station, keeping comms open. I also liked how quick you pack up and can move. I really look forward to one day getting more time to participate in race events. My bike racing days are over. Might as well sign up for radio support!
    Bugs are the worst. Hope you didn’t get too chewed up! Thanks for filming your experience. It can be a huge pain in the butt. Usually worth it in the end, I think.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, Eric. You make a great point about maintaining primary comms on the voice net while decommissioning the manpack station. I know that I look like a tactical nerd, but it is very practical having the chest rig wired with the hand mic. Also, all the gear in the chest rig is support gear for the back country (e.g., first aid, maps, grid square tool, compass, water purification, electrolyte tabs, emergency blanket, fire starting, etc.)

    • @backcountryamateurradio
      @backcountryamateurradio 2 года назад

      @@TheTechPrepper you’ve got it nailed! Sometimes I forget that you’ve got other gear in there. It’s pretty critical in the backcountry to have contingencies like that. One emergency can take you away from the vehicle pretty quick. For those you end up helping, that tactical gear starts to look less cumbersome and more essential. It all has a place. I need to be better about that myself!

    Let's get this show on the road peeps! Good exercise. I like how it's just connect cables & go time. It's too bad the FT-8900 is no longer available, so I guess if we're needing cross-band it's the Kenwood TM-V71A.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 года назад

      Thanks. We typically learn more when we encounter hiccups. The older rigs with the data port interface worked more effectively compared to the newer gear (IC-705 + tablet) with the new fangled wireless interface. New is not always better. The stations that performed the best were running laptops 5 to 14 years old with radios that have been on the market for about the same period of time. I highly recommend the CF-20. I've done several videos on it. I have even run this exercise with just the tablet portion. The screen is detachable and comes in around 2 lbs. You can find them on the secondary market for $500 to $1000.

    Very nice exercise. A suggestion I would make is to not only practice with a repeater, as you never know if it will be offline or if someone else is using it, but also practice relaying messages from weak stations. NBEMS is great for that as you've discovered as you can just resend a received message without changes. You should also practice relays for voice traffic. You may also want to try HF NVIS. For your IC-705 operator, always bring a USB cable as a backup to using the wireless just in case you need it.

      Great suggestions. We actually operated this exercise on 70cm simplex. The repeater is for us to be able train from our respective homes. We're spread out over 60 miles. I love NVIS. That's exactly where the content on this channel is going next month. The IC-705 operator and I are working on our HF NVIS antennas. We're 50 miles apart. We're even going to do some VOACAP analysis. We're even going to experiment with ALE. Thanks for the advice. 73

  • @bruehlt
    @bruehlt 2 года назад +2

    I may have mentioned this before - but getting the surface to work with the 705 is a challenge and takes a lot of effort or money - take your pick. You can use WFVIEW or pay the Icom tax. I chose the WFVIEW path and cut my teeth hard. You have to buy dual virtual cables for it to work correctly. I still plan on doing a video on getting it to work. Once it's setup it works beautifully. However, if not - it's a mess. I'll ping you as I plan on getting this recorded soon, and it may (or may not) be of some help.

    • @bruehlt

      To be clear - I could get FLdigi, VARA, winlink, WSJTX, and JS8call all working wirelessly. I could not get D-RATS working correctly however.

      Thanks for the pro tip. I passed it along to our group. My only complaint is that the older rigs with the data ports get a bad reputation these days for not having modern features. At the end of the day, it is a single cable when paired with the DigiRig and it just works with out any complicated settings on the radio or the OS. I am a firm believer in K.I.S.S. Take it easy.

I have both, but have moved to the DigiRig over the last few month. I hope this helps.The DigiRig is newer and is a lot smaller. The SignaLink is a classic, but is bulky and requires jumpers or a special module to work with various radios. The one nice thing about the SignaLink is that you can control the audio levels from the front panel.

    One of your best videos! I wish our ARES group here in Oregon would do this kind of training. We use Winlink for messages. What are your reasons for using FLDIGI etc.?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 года назад

      Thank you. Fldigi supports a number of modems. For FM, and under good conditions, the 8PSK1000L modem is lightning fast. We can traffic ICS-213, CSV, blank and custom forms in seconds. If conditions are poor, we can degrade to using our backup modem--which is MT632KL. It's considerably slower but works well in high-noise environments, poor conditions and even allows for acoustic coupling if our digital interface fails for any reason. We can switch to keyboard-to-keyboard messaging if we don't want to deal with flmsg. I'll be testing this on HF soon for regional communications using a variety of NVIS antennas. Stay tuned and please consider sharing this with your group. I only need 50 subscribers to hit 10K! Cheers.
