full ass banger right here. But seriously it doesnt feel overly dramatic or theatrical. It feels like the stillness you might feel after something terrible has happened. That moment where the responsibility hasnt hit you yet and the pain hasnt either. Everything stops and emotions are just starting to materialize- this album sounds like that formation and confusion.
The last 3 minutes of For M are some of the more intense minutes in Xiu Xiu's whole discography. It feels like something unimaginably horrible is about to happen. If the track were used in a horror movie, I'd shit my pants
Listen'd to this today at work and loved every second. I wasn't as impressed with the lyrics as I was the instrumental, but it was still fantastic. Can't wait for the new album!
If we're putting this in a spiritual trilogy with angel guts and girl with basket of fruit, I feel like this is going to be my favorite of the three. Too early to tell of course but on my first listen I can firmly say that this record is an exemplar of how to be harsh and dissonant in a subtle and atmospheric way. Angela's vocal performances really cement that here and Jamie uses a lot more subdued which maintains the tone and balance of the record. It isn't too synth heavy or too analog/acoustic, it holds both in equal measure. Proud of you lot. Looking forward to finally seeing you live.
I've spent years sifting through this noise, waiting & searching for another "I love the valley OH", or "Fabulous Muscles", and nothing ever quite hit like those tracks, but they're such good songs that I'm still trying to convince myself that I enjoy the rest of Xiu Xiu.
They do straddle a line between pretentious and eccentric I suppose. I find a lot more 'normal' sounding music to be derivative and boring. I never let an artist's pretention scare me. In their day, painters like Salvador Dali were considered eccentrics. Writers such as Edgar Allan Poe were also seen that way. Then you have people like Madonna selling out large stadiums with $500 seats.
