  • Here is one (of two) 1906 Columbia model BC 20th Century Graphophones from my collection with the large Higham Reproducer. This one is sitting on its lovely original Herzog model 717 cylinder cabinet with eye catching serpentine front. I'm playing a couple of 2 minute Albany Indestructible cylinders. Rarely will you find ANY Columbia BC Graphophone capable of producing any sound at all from a cylinder due to deterioration of the original amber friction wheel and original vulcanized rubber shoe assembly. It was a complicated friction amplification system that provided AMAZING volume and clarity, but unfortunately, worked only for a relatively short period of time. I have meticulously gone through this one from top to bottom and it plays beautifully as you will hear in the video. The sound almost over drives the camera microphone. My other Columbia BC Graphophone does not yet play as I'm needing the vulcanized rubber shoe assembly and some stylus bar parts for it. As always, I thank you for stopping in for a visit and hope that you will enjoy the pictures and the video!

Was a sad thing to see all those cylinders burn in the movie 'SongCatcher' (2000).

Another rare opportunity to experience the sounds as well as the mechanics of musical entertainment from another time, another era, another century but with just as much fun and enjoyment as the people using these contraptions would have had then...Thank you for sharing your own excitement to restore and maintain the whole set up which is indeed contagious...I really enjoyed this immensely...

This was recorded when Frank Buckles was 5 years of age. He died in 2011 at the age of 110, and he was the last surviving American World War 1 veteran at the time of his death. The majority of last surviving living veterans were from the United Kingdom, such as Harry Patch (1898-2009) and Henry Allingham (1896-2009) and Claude Choules (1901-2011).

    I'm in awe.....
Strange feeling to have, listening to music from and with technology of a past era.
It must not be easy keeping it in considerable good shape.
Thank you for sharing this magic with us!!!

The sound is amazing! I own two Edison 2 minute phonographs and one Amberola 75. I just have the basic horn to go with my Edison 2 minute phonographs, nothing near as beautiful as the morning glory horn, although I have wanted one of those for years. Is that Sousa's band, or the New York Military band playing on the cylinder? Beautiful music, too. 🙂

Thanks for your comments! The bands that are recorded on both of these cylinders were, unfortunately, not credited. Some Albany Indestructible cylinders are credited as Indestructible Military Band but neither of these cylinders have band credits listed on the rim. Both indicate "BAND" for credits.

Amazing how well it plays, beautiful condition. And it's lovely. Plus that cabinet.
My friend's parents had a spool player but it didn't play like that!

I wonder whether the difference between the reproducer throat and the horn end may have some effect on the sound. According to Hazelcorn, the BC was originally sold with special horns, to match the larger throat of the reproducer...

    • @MusicBoxBoy
      @MusicBoxBoy  3 года назад +2

Hi Bill, Thanks for your comments. The reproducer throat opening is just about 1 inch in diameter on my Columbia BC Graphophones including this one in the video. I am using a horn and connection to the reproducer with a 1 inch diameter so their is little to no loss in sound from reproducer to horn. And, yes, the BC models were originally sold with horns and connectors that were 1 inch in diameter versus commonly used horns that had a 5/8 inch opening.

Do you have to wind it longer? Is it harder to wind? I would assume it would need a stiffer spring and a longer spring. Pumping air is a lot of work and not very efficient. I would love to see a breakdown of the machine and how it works.

What do you know about Olympia floor model music boxes? There's one near me for sale which is cased in an Empire style chest of drawers. I think it's original or antique custom (the cabinet has been stripped, but was grain painted probably to be rosewood). Any idea if the cabinet sounds authentic?

Very cool! Where can you find cylinder phonographs for sale other than ebay?

Might try ruby lane antiques on the internet or try mech antiques in Arkansas. I believe they operate the Crescent hotel.

Stanton Auctions or any of the collector shows.

You might also try the "Yankee Trader" section of the Talking Machine Forum (TMF).
Some advice: for a first cylinder phonograph, you might look for an Edison Standard Model B or later, especially if it has 2/4 minute gearing. With that, and the appropriate reproducers, you can play most cylinder records. Standards are nice, reliable phonographs, are relatively commonly found, and are very portable.
