The documentary film about Vitalli, "Film Worker," is essential viewing. I just watched it and Holy Cow!, Vitali's contributions to - and work for - Kubrick get long overdue attention. While a lot of people are trying to ride on Kubrick's coattails, Vitali WAS his coattails - maybe Kubrick's entire coat. It was telling how several actors interviewed considered giving up a career as an actor an absolutely unthinkable sacrifice, Vitali did it and is, to this day, very happy with that choice. He's the keeper of the flame. He learned colour correction from Kubrick, carried out his instructions on the processing of prints for ALL his films, even the pre-"Barry Lyndon" ones. He is THE authority on how Kubrick wanted his films to look and how they were meant to be framed. Sorry, Christopher Nolan, but Vitali was actually THERE!
I totally agree. I have seen film worker 4 times, Leon really comes across as the the most loyal, honest and hard working guy who served a master of cinema. I tip my hat to him big time.
he also cares even after his death as he makes sure his films stay preserved and edited for future generations to enjoy...that's COMMITMENT and love for film..like true love...labor...and sacrifice forever...even after death..
Very, very true. People who worked for Kubrick, year after year, seem to have at least two things in common; an awareness that they were part of something important of lasting significance, and that - although he worked them hard - he worked himself even harder. Have a great, good week.
Came here just to hear this man's voice as Eyes Wide Shut is one of my favorite films and the Red Cloak character I've always found absolutely captivating.
It's so fun to listen to this guy talk because his answers are extremely nuanced, rigorous and smart. You can see why he and Kubrick got along so well.
No mystery with The Shining. Look into Kubrick's Odyseey 1-3 , by Jay Weidner, all explained there. Kubrick shot the faked moon landings, a commonly known fact in the inner sanctum, The Shining is a visual admission of that fact.
Great video in the end. Leon should write a book. He seems smart, level headed, and very able to express himself clearly. The question would be where to begin, with such a long relationship, but he should probably just pick memories from each production.
tryharder75 theres actually quite a few after 1966 they're just text interviews. theres on for the shining on youtube though where you can hear him discuss the occult
Very interesting interview. “Barry Lyndon”, for those of you who haven’t seen it, is maybe Kubrick’s greatest film. Originally, he wanted to make a biopic about Napoleon but it fell through. (I would love to see that script.). Anyway, he cheerfully told all who would listen, that he was trying to copy his shots from the famous European painters of yesteryear, and my goodness, did he make a beautiful, beautiful film.
This guy was both actor and assistant director to Stanley Kubrick a rare privilege. His best performance was as Lord Bullingdon in Barry Lyndon, on of my top 5 movies in the history of movies.

After watching this I was as interested in the interviewer as I was in Mr. Vitali; maybe more interested in a way so I searched around until I came up with the name David Poland who is a sheer pleasure. I could see where even the most hard bitten, jaundiced and cynical of the famous actors would, buy the end of the interview realize that they had a blast chatting with him. First of all he really knows his stuff and just as importantly he isn't a show off. He doesn't talk over anyone, he doesn't try to impress or engage in a sort of duel with the interviewee. He speaks clearly and economically yet still comes off as natural, relaxed, and sincere. BRAVO!
There's so many incredible things to talk about in Barry Lyndon but all everyone seems to want to ask about is filming in low light with candles and how this was a technological achievement.
Watching these movies back then in 35 and 70 millimeter was so special it's hard to describe, this is a Really good interview we appreciate the upload.
What a pleasure listening to the late Leon Vitali discuss his work with Kubrick. Vitali's erudite compass of Kubrick's gigantic landscape is so rare and so enthralling. His respect for Kubrick, and the depth of his understanding of Kubrick's intentions, make this interview a required view by anyone who believes filmmaking, done right, is the most human of all art forms. For me, Vitali was to Kubrick as Boswell was to Johnson. I also devoutly love Vitali's moxie in donning that terrific Australian Aboriginal head scarf! We have lost a great explicator of a great filmmaker.
I don't understand why this movie was panned by the critics, I think it's a masterpiece. And knowing that Stanly Kubrick's genius and passion for perfection is in all his movies...
Great interview! I love how Leon and the interviewer laugh about "Fear and Desire" never being released on blu-ray, since it just got released a few months ago. :)
I Love this Guy, you can see Why Stanley took to Him.. He is really there and open to the living moment of sentience... I bet there is a dictionary of Kubrick in Him..
Before watching BL, I didnt know this guy was he was even in the movie. I just thought this guy was a long time assistant to Stanley. Very interesting interview. Love Stanley
Stanley Kubrick was one of the greatest of all directors, and i love his films as much as anyone, but I've never been into hero worship, and I would assume Kubrick felt the same. Unless your Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dante or very few others, I can't imagine bowing down to your every wim at the detriment of my own artistic needs, and then spending the rest of my life preaching about your greatness. Leaves quite a sour taste. I think his films are more than enough proof of his value.
I hated the character Leon played in BL and brought that bias to this video and it went away during this interview. This guy seems quite nice actually and very informative and knowledgeable about the movie making process. Great interview. Thanks. I just finished watching the blue ray disk of BL for the second time. The scenery is stunning particularly the landscape at I think it was 1:44:45 of a very long shot of a wide valley in rural England. Also the scene of the kiss at the bathtub - maybe the best kiss scene on film but that's my opinion. Cheers.
I came to hear the voice of 'Red Cloak' in Eyes Wide Shit' ,he played the sinister role brilliantly Sadly I;m not really familiar with his other roles.
Leon was his second brain..his extended extra hand and eyes, ears, everything...greatest assistant ever..and not even the correct word, he was his second master at command the person you want with you in battle lol
Being in Stanley’s circle must’ve been fucking hell and a great privilege. I’m surprised Leon hasn’t attempted to make a film. Too busy taking care of Stanley stuff still probably.
There is a book about Vitali and Kubrick's homosexual relationship, called Eyes Wide Open, Christiana Kubrick is currently fighting it's imminent release in court.
What a fantastic interview. We've lost someone with a such a unique and personal insight into Kubrick's work. Rest in peace.
Rest in peace to this great legend.

What a great match intellectually and artistically. Kubrick knew how to choose staff/talent.
