  • In this video I will be repotting six of my Phalaenopsis orchids into lava rocks. This is the first time I will be using lava rocks to repot orchids and I will be sharing my experience with you. I will also be discussing the different types of orchid medium that I have tried. Keep watching to learn more.

Lava rock is wonderful but you have to water way more and once those roots stick to the lava rocks is almost imposible to remove them without doing serious damage. I live in climate like yours and from experience my phal do way better in moss. All comes down to the watering. Semi hydro doesn’t work in my environment due to algae forming in days and mosquitos. I am so glad to see you on the path to become an expert and thats exactly how is done by watching others, reading and trying for yourself what works for you and why. Keep up the good work.

Hi, thank you so much. Indeed. It is definitely trial and error for me and when I find something that works then I stick to it.
Currently, the Phals are doing well in the lava rocks. I don’t have to worry too much about watering because it rains often and I will supplement when the rain tapers off.
What I plan to do is not to repot them but instead up pot. I might break the terracotta or just place that one inside a larger one once they outgrow their pots. I’m a bit of a overwaterer so I’m afraid of moss. I rather stay on the drier side😅. Happy planting!

I started potting my Orchids in pebbles last year. I have not tried lava rock. Thinking of giving it a try. Thanks. Yes, I like that I have no root rot and pebbles do not break down.

Pebbles….I have to give that a try as well one day. How are they doing since you’ve potted them up? Any blooms yet?

They are doing quite well. Yes, all of my mature orchids have bloomed. I have a few babies that I hope will bloom next year. Plenty of new , bigger growth on my Cattleya. Thanks for the response. Happy growing. 🏝️🍵
