I have come late to reed organs. I fooled around on a couple as a kid - someone always had one in a basement or at a cottage - but it was just working the pedals and pulling on the stops and making noise without sense. And I guess I just stopped thinking about them after that. Considered them good for accompanying hymns in poor old-fashioned churches and not much else really. And now I listen again and marvel and what beautiful instruments they are. Such quality of sound from just little reeds - it's amazing. I like the sound better than pipe or electronic organs, it has a vocal/string quality, and less of the bombast. A very nice instrument, very nicely played.
+murfleblurg - Very few musicians understand reed organs correctly - you seem to fully understand them perfectly. I thought the exact same thing about these old organs years ago, that they were more novelty than anything. It wasn't until I learned that they are very expressive and full of colour, which I now believe they are on a class of their own - not a replacement for a pipe organ but something entirely different. Like you say, they have a voice/string quality - this is because they can breathe like a voice with careful control of the treadles. Thanks for commenting!
I never would have believed a reed organ capable of such expression and variation of tone. Absolutely breathtaking performance! Thank you so much for all your postings!!!
Thanks! Hopefully more people can see that these organs can do more than just belt out the notes, but actually make music and fun to play at the same time!
Well done sir, a very fine performance of one of my favourite pieces for organ. When I first learned this piece, I was playing a two-staff transcription on a two-manual organ without functioning pedals at the time, so I can kind of relate a little bit to the awkwardness in the hands haha. You've earned my respect for playing the three-staff edition in the manuals very closely to the spirit of how the piece would be usually performed with the pedals. It must have taken a lot of practice to do it that flawlessly. I am personally trained on the pipe organ, but you have given me some insight into the capabilities of the reed organ that I wasn't remotely aware of - can't wait to try one out for myself.
All I can think to say is that I agree with all the positive comments already made by others. I love the tempo. Your restoration work and willingness to share your performing talent is much appreciated. - TC

Very impressive! This piece certainly gives both instrument and player a good work-out! I've played a good many reed organs in my time, but this is the first two-manual instrument I've ever seen or heard. I'm so proud that it was manufactured in Canada! While a pump organ can never have as varied a tonal palette as a pipe organ - naturally enough, since all its sounds are produced by reeds - I am amazed by the variety of colours this instrument is able to produce. It has a pretty powerful bass too, without the muddiness usually produced by couplers. Even more unexpected are the quite radical crescendos and diminuendos, almost equal to the effect of opening and closing the swell-box of a pipe organ! How is that possible?! Also, the action on this particular instrument seems a little more subtle than that of most reed organs (which tend to be too loose and springy to allow much in the way of articulation). Is there anything special about the mechanics of this organ's keyboard?
I am astonished and astounded! I have never thought of the reed organ as a venue for this type of composition. Your performance is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! This instrument is a-m-a-z-i-n-g!

Thank you very much!
Wow--that was amazing! I don't play organ myself (I took piano as a child), but I have spent a few years in choir watching our church's music director (who has a PhD) play Bach. It has given me an appreciation of the organ. I truly would not have thought this piece to be possible on this instrument!
+Finsirith - Thanks! It took a fair amount of practice for me to get this piece to work without a pedalboard for the bass, but I think almost anything is possible on these under-appreciated instruments with a little modification here and there...
+Finsirith This piece was pretty much written FOR the Organ actually.
+Cr4z3d Yes--a BIG organ, with pedals. I meant that I didn't think such a small reed organ (without pedals for the bass line) could be used to play this piece.
Finsirith
yea
Dam, awesome preformance.
INCREDIBLE Performance!! WOW!!
Thanks Bill!
@@ReedOrgans I'm a keyboard hack ! LOL! Good thing I can sing!
How on earth did you manage to do this so well without pedals? I'm amazed
Still gives me chills of excitement every time I hear it! This is my all time favorite pipe organ piece and it sounds fantastic on this particular reed organ too... of course the skill of the one at the keyboard plays the most important part! :)
***** Thanks Bob, I'm happy to hear the you like it on reed organ too!
Awesome. So rich and full, sounds as good as when played on the best of pipe organs.
Thanks! It is a confusing instrument, because the sound can resemble a pipe organ in some regards, yet it is definitely a reed organ by the way the air is controlled for expression.
Great job Rodney
Thanks my friend!
I've always wanted a reed organ but there very hard to restore but I already have a real pipe organ. Some day you should post a video of you doing a duet with my self for widor toccata
Absolutely fantastic! This my friends is called, perfection.

Offshoreorganbuilder Indeed, a workout for the body and mind at the same time!
