I am so late with this video, but I would like to push the "controversy" a bit further: 有効打突 is well defined, so if not hitting a target is acceptable in some cases, they should re-visit the rule book and have it stated clearly. The closest I can find to an exception is regarding genmyo-na-waza, but this was debana men. Now, I understand that it was in spirit of kendo and furthermore shinpan are only human, but does it meet the criteria as written in the rulebook, seems not. And honestly that is fine, the whole event was great either way.
I am writing this while expecting shipments from Kendo Star soon, so for anyone reading this post that has not shopped at Kendo Star yet: shop at Kendo Star, you cannot go wrong with them!
Thanks for another great video and keep them coming.

Great comment - to be clear, I don't necessarily think not hitting the target is 'acceptable' - rather, there are cases when a strike appears to be a clear and fantastic Ippon by all accounts in the moment. Only by watching video replays do we realise that perfect contact with the target was not actually made. In these cases, I think it is acceptable for these strikes to be considered as valid Ippon.

Don't you think that the refereeing at this championship was not up to par? Many misses were counted as an ippon.

Yes. I've heard through hachidan that attended the tournament that this issue is known and being talked about.

Problem is, when cuts are getting so fast its very difficult to tell if a cut makes impact or not

No, I don't especially think that personally.
