I feel like NYC and LA get all the glory from people overseas, but there are other great cities in the US too, starting with Chicago. When I have guests from other countries visit me, I try to take them on a weekend trip there and it usually blows away their expectations. It's cheaper, less crowded, great shopping, culture, restaurants, etc, etc. So much fun. Enjoy, Fleur... have a great time!
Agreed! My father has lived in LA, NY and Chicago (amongst many other big US cities like Atlanta, Buffalo, Charlotte) and LA was his favorite for the weather but Chicago for everything else. He always said it has all the great parts of NYC without the ridiculous crowds.
So glad that you are enjoying the city, very happy that you got to see the art museum the ferris wheel and the lake. I'm glad our weather is treating you nicely.
It's called the bean. Also, some of my not to be missed places in Chicago are Garretts popcorn (get the Chicago mix, it sounds weird, but go with it) and Ginos East-best Pizza in the country! I love the artists cafe for breakfast as well, but Garretts and Ginos are hands down my top two can't miss stops for anyone.
I am SO glad you had a proper first day! You have subscribers here...I am in Michigan, just across that giant Lake Michigan. Watch from the sky when you fly home, how big the lakes are...largest fresh water supply in the world, 5 lakes connected around the mitten state, and Illinois (pronounced the French way, no S) is our Midwest neighbor. Be sure to have a look at the old Macy's. LOVE love the art museum. My fav, as well as aquarium, field museum, and oh, architecture. Enjoy!
aw, that ferris wheel footage brings back memories. I remember when I went on that with my dad when we first visited Chicago. It's now one of my favorite cities
I love my city so much! It's such a privilege to live in a city with such a rich architectural and cultural legacy. So glad you are enjoying your visit!
I'm from Zambia and I now live in Chicago: I have this ridiculous urge to meet you because you've been to both of those places and more. It just amazes me how small the world really is. Enjoy your stay!
Its like Fleur & Lauren Do A Ferris Bueillers Day off in Chicago..... Remember the part where they went to the same art gallery, I was there 10 years ago, the art there is amazing. My friend lives just off the lake... Have fun!
If you get a chance there is a good outlet mall called Premium Outlets in Rosemont and they usually have shuttles there for free. They have Prada, Tory Burch, coach, Gucci and a ton of other high-end designers and outlets from Barneys, Bloomingdales and Saks. Try looking it up on the internet and see if the stores are of interest to you. It's about 30 minutes from downtown but I feel it's worth the drive and they have some really cool artwork in the mall.
You can take the L (or elevated train to Rosemont and then a cab). Part of the beauty of Chicago and Chicagoland is that it's easy to get around via public transportation and there are taxis everywhere, at least in Chicago. Not as much in the suburbs but you can call one
I should have included, I highly recommend the boat architecture tour. It's great and you get amazing views of the city. I've been downtown countless times a year and just recently took that tour and I still thought it was amazing to see the city from a different vantage point
I grew up in Chicago - this makes me miss home! I used to live in a studio apartment right off Michigan Avenue... dangerously close to all the fantastic shopping and fun! Chicago is a great city, enjoy your visit!
Hi Fleur, just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate you uploading your vlogs so quickly! I know it must be a hassle to edit them everyday while you're travelling. It shows that you really do care about your subscribers!
Dont be afraid to be loud in the Art Institute. I go to school there. Thats how you tell the tourists from the people that live there (students and faculty) talk as loud as you want and you can start up a good conversation learning about things. Chances are a lot of the people around are artists and can answer some questions for you! I mean it is nice to quietly soak it all in if you are into a spiritual art experience, but dont be afraid to speak at normal levels.
Yes I think so! I took a painting class at the Field Museum last year and my class never spoke quietly. We spoke openly and it encouraged patrons to come talk to us about our work and what we studied and opened the door for conversation and question. Its not like there is a museum overlord there to hush people. I would say about half of the people at a museum are people who actually study this stuff or work there and are very knowledgeable and happy to have conversations. Security guards just care if you are like playing tag in a room or are trying to touch stuff. Talking at a normal conversational level should be more common!
chicago is surely one of the greatest cities in my opinion! gosh.... i had such an amazing time during my first visit 2 years ago. i wanna go back so so bad!!! enjoy your stay fleur!
Chicago - yay! So glad you loved the art institute, so fantastic. There are more tourists in the summer, but it's amazing year-round (even in the dead of winter).
I've never seen Lake Michigan either! So gorgeous, looks like I have to explore a bit of my own neck of the woods as well! That museum looks amazing too, when I visited the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, it was like walking through a dream! xx
I use to live in Chicago right across the lake! Think I've been to that restaurant as well. Now I live in Houston, TX.. Thanks for lifting my mood up! U have great energy and inspiration!
Fleur!!! You girls are so cute! The reflective cloud that you loved is the BEAN!!;) I am so glad you are loving my hometown Chicago!! Maybe I will see you!!! Ahhhhh love love love
Fleur! It was my boyfriend you met while eating at BoHo! He was so excited to meet you and show off his makeup knowledge :) Enjoy the rest of your time in Chicago!
This makes me miss Chicago so much. I used to visit every Christmas season (I grew up in the suburbs), but now that my family's in Los Angeles, I rarely get a chance to visit.
What a lovely video, so glad that you are enjoying yourself and i hope that your uncle is doing ok. Lots of love from your home country of england. ( your videos are always a treat!) x
you're actually right that its a cloud, most people call it the bean, but the sculptor actually named it cloud gate. also the main building of the museum is very old, you probably just entered through the newer modern wing that connects the museum to millennium park.
Aww I was in Chicago in June and now I really want to go back! My hotel was on the Magnificent Mile and I also went to Millennium Park. It's bringing back so many memories!
Shopping is good too! Go to the John Hancock building - you can see Chicago 95 floors up - amazing view! The best view is in the ladies restrooms though haha, no joke there's a giant window you clan look out of!
Once you get out into the middle of Lake Michigan its more like sailing on teh ocean than it is on a lake. :) I'm from WI and went to college that was right on the lake. Also you HAVEEEE to get Deep Dish pizza when you are in Chicago its wonderful!
Im from Chicago and you need to go to the Hancock building for drinks and while youre there the lady's restroom has like the best place for pictures as weird as it sounds, trust me, its AMAZING!
I'll be in the loop for school tonight and keeping an eye out for you! Hope you have a great time. Also, I sing in the "Harry Potter Church" a couple times a year and it's just as beautiful on the inside! :)
