I'm about to change my throttle cable and housing on my 98 425 magnum I have been having a similar problem water got in the throttle housing and it hasn't run right since so I'm changing it since I already have a lot of parts for it sometimes it's good to have a parts bike.

Thanks for posting this. I have been troubleshooting this and was unable to figure it out. Changed spark plug, fuel, fuel filter, etc. Took 10 minutes (including watching the video) to get my quad to idle.

You saved me!!! I went though everything, cleaned the carb, jets, fuel etc. bought an atv for the wife and could not get it to idle. Now she purrs like a kitten. I ride motorcycles and there isn’t this kind of safety circuit so I would’ve never found it if it wasn’t for you!

I have a 2017 Sportsman 570 that would shut off at random times. No rhyme or reason. I would still have electronics but engine would cut off with no sputtering or warning whatsoever. I took the dealership plastic tag off the ignition key and noticed that it had a tremendous amount of throttle slack. Tightened it up and no problems yet... Great video.

If, like me, you have this problem and can't adjust your cable enough to open the contacts, I was able to fix it by placing a small rubber grommet on the plastic stud inside the ETC compartment. Now the cam contacts it sooner and keeps the contacts open on idle. Contacts will still close if cable gets stuck.
you sir are a life saver, I changed my filters oil air gas fresh tune up new plug for winter and then this started i was pretty confused. started, runs fine goes down the road like it aint no thing but idle it would not. I was about to pull my carb thinking clogged idle jet. Well i didnt even pull the AWD cap off just a fast half turn on the throttle cable and bammmmm el fixo. thanks again for the heads up.

I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500. I had just replaced the carb about a month and a half ago because I think the float inside was either stuck or cracked from severe cold. I live in central Alaska, and it was leaking gas from the carb itself. Seemed to run fine after the replacement but the idle was a bit high, but I didn't touch the adjustment because before, the idle was a bit too low, so I figured just leave it alone, and with the colder weather, I wasn't too concerned about it. But then, just yesterday it started doing this: It would only start and run with the choke pulled out. Once it starts I would then push the choke in a bit, the unit would start to die or close to it, so I'd pull it out again and it would run at a very high idle speed, too high to shift gears safely for sure. With the choke pushed all the way back in, it will die. A real head scratcher for me. It's at a remote cabin, so when I go out next week I will surely check the throttle mechanism for what you pointed out. I just hope it's that simple. It has really been a great workhorse for me, but I can't afford for it to break down on me. I use it too much for snow removal and hauling, etc, and during the summer it's really tough to move it because of the remote lake I'm on. Great video. About the most concise that I have seen on RUclips for repair and troubleshooting.

@@How2Wrench Shane, I had forgot to mention that the wheeler is now backfiring, which it has never done before. Frustrating. Hard to work on outside also when it's 5-10 degrees below zero. I'm almost considering replacing it with a newer 4x4 which is equipped with EFI. I will have to research the reliability of that, also. I can, however, move the wheeler back to my warm garage during the winter, on the ice road. It makes a lot more sense to try and work on it in a much more comfortable environment. Really appreciate your reply and your other videos! Helps a rube!

Thanks so much. I was going crazy trying to figure this out after a carb rebuild. I guess my # wasn't clear enough watching a bunch of other useless carb rebuilds, I have been subscribed to your channel for quite a bit. What other ATV has this same thing under that cover? Thank you again for this video. I tried the fix and Bam! the 2 points were actually touching. I adjusted them and in the process found my battery dead. I put in a brand new high output battery and now it works like it's supposed to.

Idle rpm changed from1150 to14/1500 so could not shift properly.Technician said all he could find were faulty spark plug wires .Replacing them fixed problem.This was 5 or 6 years ago and problem is now reoccurring

I have polaris Hawkeye 325 2016 I think model , it rain idle perfectly until one Sunday riding made sharp turn bike reve dropped ever since then hard to start and won't keep reves , could this also be from this connect on video , bikes at Polaris in Melbourne they have gone through the bike and can't find problem, recently compression tested came back fine and gad fuel lines checked any idea ???? People have said fuel sensor as the new models sensors are not as good as the older models .

That's the exact issue I'm having but the one I'm working on is a 95 polaris magnum 425. The throttle position control looks different than what you're showing.

@@How2Wrench no it didn't help. My throttle cable sensor box looks different than that on the video. I believe mine is an older model style. So I don't know which cable to cut or how to adjust the cable on mine.

Hey awesome video this will help a lot! Question regarding a Polaris trail boss 330 if at all you can help. It had been a long time such as a half year since I turned my Polaris on. The battery was for sure dead so I replaced it. As soon as I connected the negative and positive, there is a blowing sound coming from the bike. The engine is not running and the only way for the noise to stop is to unplug the battery. Now the bike turns on and runs and drives even though the noise is still blowing out. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a leaf blower. The overheating light also shows up however the bike is still running. Any ideas? I don’t know much mechanic work but enough to fix what I’m told could be the problem. Thank you for any help!!

Thanks for the info i guess my 400 sport is in its safety mode im gonna go right now and give thia a try.My atv is revving high not letting me put it into gear unless its off.. I know this is an old video but I’m having issues with my 2016 sportsman 570sp I’ve replaced the fuel pump and tmap sensor and tmap tail harness now the quad starts only on throttle but dies if under 1700 rpms I checked the etc and my throttle cable makes no difference on the adjustment I made sure the two were not touching tho and it still would do the same thing do you think my fuel injector got plugged?

Good Morning, I have a 90 sportman 2005. I takes off really slow under a load but when you get rolling everything works perfectly. It seems to be a common problem with this 2 stroke. I have a low idle issue on my 08 Polaris RMK 600. It’s Fuel Injected. One machine idles at 1550 the other at 900-1100 and after running for an hr wants to stall. Do you think it’s just plugs or is there an adjustment? Thank you

I have a similar problem. Mine wont idle unless the choke is pulled out. I want to check inside the ETC box but I don’t know how to get the cover off. It is not screwed on so does it just snaps down? Thanks

So this happened to me but now my RPMs are out of whack how do I fix the RPMs I'll give it gas and it'll go up to 3000 RPMs but in idle it's at zero somebody help

is it possible that it could be a hair from touching (etc) but have issues because its a little closer than the 16th in even? I got an issue with my 2006 scrambler 500 thats It runs and starts first pull but is running very choppy slow and gutless? any help or lead me to some would be great im on two days of trying MY best but just cant figure yet

I’ve been trying to fix my quad all summer. Rebuilt the carb, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, adjusting idle screw. Nothing worked until I found this video! Thanks a lot! Owe you a beer! Lol

I'm about to change my throttle cable and housing on my 98 425 magnum I have been having a similar problem water got in the throttle housing and it hasn't run right since so I'm changing it since I already have a lot of parts for it sometimes it's good to have a parts bike.

Thanks for posting this. I have been troubleshooting this and was unable to figure it out. Changed spark plug, fuel, fuel filter, etc. Took 10 minutes (including watching the video) to get my quad to idle.

You saved me!!! I went though everything, cleaned the carb, jets, fuel etc. bought an atv for the wife and could not get it to idle. Now she purrs like a kitten. I ride motorcycles and there isn’t this kind of safety circuit so I would’ve never found it if it wasn’t for you!
After whatching this video it kept me from spending money on stuff that wasn’t bad on my bike

I have a 2017 Sportsman 570 that would shut off at random times. No rhyme or reason. I would still have electronics but engine would cut off with no sputtering or warning whatsoever. I took the dealership plastic tag off the ignition key and noticed that it had a tremendous amount of throttle slack. Tightened it up and no problems yet...

If, like me, you have this problem and can't adjust your cable enough to open the contacts, I was able to fix it by placing a small rubber grommet on the plastic stud inside the ETC compartment. Now the cam contacts it sooner and keeps the contacts open on idle. Contacts will still close if cable gets stuck.
you sir are a life saver, I changed my filters oil air gas fresh tune up new plug for winter and then this started i was pretty confused. started, runs fine goes down the road like it aint no thing but idle it would not. I was about to pull my carb thinking clogged idle jet. Well i didnt even pull the AWD cap off just a fast half turn on the throttle cable and bammmmm el fixo. thanks again for the heads up.

I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500. I had just replaced the carb about a month and a half ago because I think the float inside was either stuck or cracked from severe cold. I live in central Alaska, and it was leaking gas from the carb itself. Seemed to run fine after the replacement but the idle was a bit high, but I didn't touch the adjustment because before, the idle was a bit too low, so I figured just leave it alone, and with the colder weather, I wasn't too concerned about it. But then, just yesterday it started doing this: It would only start and run with the choke pulled out. Once it starts I would then push the choke in a bit, the unit would start to die or close to it, so I'd pull it out again and it would run at a very high idle speed, too high to shift gears safely for sure. With the choke pushed all the way back in, it will die. A real head scratcher for me. It's at a remote cabin, so when I go out next week I will surely check the throttle mechanism for what you pointed out. I just hope it's that simple. It has really been a great workhorse for me, but I can't afford for it to break down on me. I use it too much for snow removal and hauling, etc, and during the summer it's really tough to move it because of the remote lake I'm on. Great video. About the most concise that I have seen on RUclips for repair and troubleshooting.

@@How2Wrench Shane, I had forgot to mention that the wheeler is now backfiring, which it has never done before. Frustrating. Hard to work on outside also when it's 5-10 degrees below zero. I'm almost considering replacing it with a newer 4x4 which is equipped with EFI. I will have to research the reliability of that, also. I can, however, move the wheeler back to my warm garage during the winter, on the ice road. It makes a lot more sense to try and work on it in a much more comfortable environment. Really appreciate your reply and your other videos! Helps a rube!

Thank you again for this video. I tried the fix and Bam! the 2 points were actually touching. I adjusted them and in the process found my battery dead. I put in a brand new high output battery and now it works like it's supposed to.

Idle rpm changed from1150 to14/1500 so could not shift properly.Technician said all he could find were faulty spark plug wires .Replacing them fixed problem.This was 5 or 6 years ago and problem is now reoccurring

I have polaris Hawkeye 325 2016 I think model , it rain idle perfectly until one Sunday riding made sharp turn bike reve dropped ever since then hard to start and won't keep reves , could this also be from this connect on video , bikes at Polaris in Melbourne they have gone through the bike and can't find problem, recently compression tested came back fine and gad fuel lines checked any idea ???? People have said fuel sensor as the new models sensors are not as good as the older models .

If this were the problem, would the system throw a check engine light/code? If so, what would be the common code it throws?
Would this also be the issue if it idles , but bogs down giving it gas ?

That's the exact issue I'm having but the one I'm working on is a 95 polaris magnum 425. The throttle position control looks different than what you're showing.

@@How2Wrench no it didn't help. My throttle cable sensor box looks different than that on the video. I believe mine is an older model style. So I don't know which cable to cut or how to adjust the cable on mine.

Hey awesome video this will help a lot! Question regarding a Polaris trail boss 330 if at all you can help. It had been a long time such as a half year since I turned my Polaris on. The battery was for sure dead so I replaced it. As soon as I connected the negative and positive, there is a blowing sound coming from the bike. The engine is not running and the only way for the noise to stop is to unplug the battery. Now the bike turns on and runs and drives even though the noise is still blowing out. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a leaf blower. The overheating light also shows up however the bike is still running. Any ideas? I don’t know much mechanic work but enough to fix what I’m told could be the problem. Thank you for any help!!

I was able to tighten the throttle a tiny bit according to the manual. Hopefully it was the issue

550 efi ran fine, pushed the vehicle into the garage , shut it down. The next day wouldn't start; turned over, but no start. Full fuel and battery.

I know this is an old video but I’m having issues with my 2016 sportsman 570sp I’ve replaced the fuel pump and tmap sensor and tmap tail harness now the quad starts only on throttle but dies if under 1700 rpms I checked the etc and my throttle cable makes no difference on the adjustment I made sure the two were not touching tho and it still would do the same thing do you think my fuel injector got plugged?

Good Morning, I have a 90 sportman 2005. I takes off really slow under a load but when you get rolling everything works perfectly. It seems to be a common problem with this 2 stroke. I have a low idle issue on my 08 Polaris RMK 600. It’s Fuel Injected. One machine idles at 1550 the other at 900-1100 and after running for an hr wants to stall. Do you think it’s just plugs or is there an adjustment? Thank you

I have a similar problem. Mine wont idle unless the choke is pulled out. I want to check inside the ETC box but I don’t know how to get the cover off. It is not screwed on so does it just snaps down?

yes take a flat head and pop it off you will see like 5 places around it where it snaps in

Hi, I have a problem with my sportaman 400. It turns on correctly, everything is fine, but when accelerating and releasing the accelerator it makes explosions. please help.
Backfiring is either over fueling or or maybe timing out, try getting a quality plug make sure the coil is good and run a higher octane fuel
Could you watch my videos on my Magnum that I’ve posted and see if I’m having a similar issue? I can’t get mine to idle more than 10 seconds and it dies out.

So this happened to me but now my RPMs are out of whack how do I fix the RPMs I'll give it gas and it'll go up to 3000 RPMs but in idle it's at zero somebody help

I did all that and my phoenix 200 still does not start and I tried all the position on the needle clip someone help please

is it possible that it could be a hair from touching (etc) but have issues because its a little closer than the 16th in even? I got an issue with my 2006 scrambler 500 thats It runs and starts first pull but is running very choppy slow and gutless? any help or lead me to some would be great im on two days of trying MY best but just cant figure yet
it idles great too as long as your not trying to feed her the gas? carb is clean but im not sure if or how the diaphram works? i dont know thanks
