Orchard Audio PecanPi + Streamer Review - Can Streaming Beat Vinyl Records?

  • In this video, I discuss and review the Orchard Audio PecanPi+ Streamer. As you know, I love vinyl but sometimes the convenience of streaming is necessary. How does the PecanPi+ Streamer stack up in sound quality compared to other DACS and Vinyl Records? I did an in depth blind test to find out. The results were pretty shocking. So for a change of pace, let's discuss the value of a good streamer and all of the situations where a good streamer can enhance our lives. Even though vinyl is my favorite format, it's really all about the music we love.
Here's the link to check out the Orchard Audio website for more information.

Here's a link to the streamer that I reviewed in this video.

Well, if anyone doubts you’re an audiophile, that’s now pretty much settled. Welcome and enjoy the sickness!
During vinyls dark days, when it looked as though vinyl albums were dead, I held on to my Luxman turntable as a reminder of days gone by and a work of art as much as anything. I truly missed the physical connection to the music and the artwork of the album covers. The first issue of Alan Parsons first album is a perfect example! Streaming and vinyl both have their unique experiences and I love both.

Very well said. ❤️ You were smart to hang on to your Luxman turntable. So many people got rid of their turntables and their records only to regret it. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗

The problem with streaming is the streamer could lose the right to have that music but with physical ownership it is yours. I have a Sony 10 cd changer so I have no problem

With people who don’t have big records room and having to add CD to the mix makes it hard to have the space. I agree with Melinda I love to listen to music while doing housework and yes you could have it on your phone but if you’re doing the dishes and running water you can’t hear it and your phone volume only goes up so high so having a streamer you can use your own speakers with is a plus!

Melinda, it is Stan again. I lost my streamer about a month ago when I awakened to a "thunderstorm" coming from my listening room. My system was actually amplifying the death of my streamer. I immediately shut everything down; I used to leave everything powered all the time up until this event. I was so afraid that my speakers had been over-driven, but I realized the system was recreating input from my streamer, which was the chosen input at the time. When I took the streamer out of the signal, thankfully, all was well. I did not realize how much I would miss the streamer. I particularly miss Airplay from my computer, as well as a few internet radio stations. Thank you for your review. I am elated that we, in this modern time, have access to a literal plethora of music via streaming. Vinyl is my go-to source. But I am really missing the variety of music and the convenience of streaming. You have given a great review, letting me narrow my options of a replacement. Thanks!

Nice video. I do wish you had done blind A/B testing between vinyl and the streamer on several releases. It seemed like Achtung wasn’t entirely blind. If streaming delivered full album art work and packaging it would be a true game changer. For new current-day non-reissue albums the digital often sounds equal if not better to me.

Again thx a lot doing this Melinda. Just gotta love your channel 🤩
And by the way, I heard from a professional sound engineer working in Norwegian Broadcasting that if you a/b test streaming v.s. vinyl it may most likely not be the same thing, he suggests that many of the masters going to streaming services are significantly more compressed than the vinyl masters. Although: I heard streamed music so beautiful in an audio fair that adult people were sitting there crying; And I was one of them 🥰
So do we really generally get better masters when we buy vinyl?
    I want both, win-win 😍🥰😎

    • @OrchardAudio

I only live in a very small flat/apartment located on a retirement block of 125 flats/apartments. I’m located on the the top floor of this block, it’s the 3rd floor. In reality I have very little space for a streamer.

I agree with you 100% in that streaming music can be absolutely convenient at times. I stream music myself, solely for those situations, like yourself, when changing records is simply not possible. However, I am an absolute vinyl addict, and will never walk away from that format. Getting a new Lp, holding the record, reading the liner notes, or those special things included at times, holds a sentimental value. Something you can actually hold in your hands. This is not the case with streaming, yet being able to create playlists is a big bonus. As you mentioned, there is a place for both formats, and whichever can bring you joy at the time, by all means, go for it! Melinda - You’ve once again presented a perfect topic for discussion! 😁👏💯👍🏆

Nice one Melinda. I have gone down this road quite a bit with DACs etc. I think this is a very challenging thing to do. The issue is that the source digital files you are using are not the same mastering as the vinyl so comparing them to the vinyl is not really apples to apples. One thing to try would be to get a ADC (analog to digital converter). Record some of your vinyl then compare the playback (from the ADC) to the vinyl to see if there is a difference. I have found DSD recordings of vinyl to closely align to the vinyl playback. There are several ADCs out there. Unfortunately most of this streaming stuff is lossy and compressed (or in some cases brick walled). Even when it is lossless streaming it may be compressed and blown out. The DAC itself is a bit of a rabbit hole. So why not keep the pecanPI?

I have a very good streamer, the Eversolo DMP-A8, which also has a quality analogue pre-amplifier and a Rega RP8 (connected of course via the phono stage) and I was able to give up the integrated amplifier and replace it with a power one and thus improve the sound quality .

I hope you don’t mind me asking a question which I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I’m very curious about the pads which you have under the feet of your P8. I heard that Mobile Fidelity will be coming out with new box sets like the UHQR. Each box set will have, depending on how many songs are on the original record, five or six records, a side for each song, so you have to get up after EVERY song to flip it over and play the ONE song that's on that side. It's coming! ENJOY your Channel and look forward to watching it. That was tongue in cheek up above.

I grew up listening to records, so I have never had playlists. I am a firm believer in listening to the whole album from start to finish. Vinyl, CD or FLAC all work. The format is not as important as the recording and engineering of the album. From my experience, sometimes a record sounds best. Sometimes it is the digital form sounds best, CD or a FLAC file. Most often, they all sound great because they were recorded properly. I love my ROON core in my home with endpoints all over the house for whole-home listening. Thanks again!

But I also have a Dell server with over 135GB of music file from low res mp3 to hi-res vinyl transfers which I feed to a 4.1 Visio soundbar from a PC in my living room for background music. e.g. I have a couple of playlists that I choose from on Sunday morning and that plays almost all day in the background. Streaming is dangerous territory because it allows you to multi-task. I’ve played records a lot less for the past 10 years than I did before, but end up to listening to more music. The convenience is the biggest factor and can have a great effect as time goes by. It literally is the bandwagon of the future although it won’t stop you from buying records which is an affliction that many vinyl enthusiasts find difficult to escape from. Having said that, be advised to proceed with caution as you do not want to follow the path of neglecting your collection which may invariably occur the day you add a really good streamer to your equipment set-up.

So much depends on your front end equipment. I think it's easier to get close to top of the line in the digital world than analog. I bought a refurbished PS Audio Perfectwave DirectStream MKII for $2,500 direct from PS. Not the current state of the art but a fabulous value and maybe yesterday's sota. I output from my pioneer dvd/SACD player via hdmi though a converter box to the PS and get pure DSD. The sound quality is amazing. Comparing Wish You Were Here to the Analog Productions SACD and Vinyl it's very hard to tell the difference. But I don't have the end all in analog. I'm using a VPI Scout turntable and tonearm with a top of the line Grado reference cartridge. It sounds great to me but I don't know what a 10s of thousands of dollars or 100s of thousands of dollars vinyl rig sounds like. I do think my digital front end isn't all that far from the top. So there might be more in the vinyl that I can't afford to hear right now.
As for all the other conveniences of digital you hit the nail on the head. For the car or casual listening it's tough to beat digital streaming vs physical media. And if you're not sitting down and critically listening you won't hear a difference. This is why I have an analog system with all the best amps in the house and a digital system with very good but not SOTA amps.

I have nothing against digital, but I always prefer to have the media or files locally, as not every streaming service is lossless and the connection speed may affect the audio quality. I believe they can be as good as vinyl, as long as they're lossless. I have cd's that I'd place over vinyl versions (even first pressings) and I strongly believe the digital (SACD) of Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side sound better than any pressing I've heard. I have 30 feet of albums I bought until they evaporated in 1989. I didn't listen to them much but in 2016 I quit listening to them altogether after we moved because the albums are in the basement due to lack of room. Instead I stream off a computer in my house that I keep ripped CDs on. I stream Pandora when I am in my old pickup truck. I also spent a long trip with my brother who uses Tidal which is a higher end streaming service. Probably because I watch this channel, I recently decided that I could store a couple feet of albums upstairs and have a small selection of LPs to listen to. Each time I put an album on I say to myself "wow this LP sounds much better than streaming." Claims can be made that streamed music has better separation, more accurate bass, no nicks or hiss, and other positives, but in the end digital music doesn't have the freshness of analog LPs. Digital is missing something and it just doesn't sound as good.
But the convenience of digital makes it good enough. I got my first car in 1973 when all they had was radios. The first thing I did was install a cassette deck because you can't play records in your car. But I didn't buy pre-recorded cassettes because it was obvious they wouldn't last. Instead I always bought the album and recorded chrome 90 minute cassettes for the car. Because of that I still have every album in excellent condition 50 years later. Digital is the modern day cassette. We have to use digital in vehicles for the same reason I used cassettes - because it can handle bumps.
I found that the Tidal streaming service doesn't have a lot of content in the same way Blockbuster only had a small fraction of the possible movies. If you don't mind being limited to what the streaming service wants you to listen to, then they are fine.

The Orchard streaner does sound impressive! I do stream music. Streaming is fascinating to me, but the dac in the streamer is more fascinating to me than the streamer, but I slightly prefer cds over streaming. And it is fascinating that a streamer has memory that is similar to a hard drive. The cd spools hold 100 cds. That where I store my cds. So my cds dont require much storage space, about the same space as a streamer. I also have copied my cds to a hard drive that dont sound as good as cds. I also copy youtube record videos to a hard drive, using Wondershare software WAV files that I bought on the internet, that sound better than store bought cds, pretty close to record sounding, without worrying about records wearing out. I also copy records straight to a hard drive, & back them up to a second hard drive. Now dacs are a different story, good for streaming & cds. A dvd player & a dac can be combined to play music, or use a cd player. Here is the reason a cd player isnt as good. A cd player is actually a dac & a cd players turntable in 1 box. Usually the cd transport wears out first & you lose the whole box with the dac in the box. With a dvd player as a transport, if it wears out, you still have the dac. The reason you need a dvd player as a transport, but cant use a dvd player as a transport, is that a cd player dont have a digital connector to hook up the dac. Never buy an expensive transport as it is a waste of money. Also a tiny cheap dac is great to hook up to a laptop cd burner, using cheap Bose headphones.

I am a huge vinyl fan and I love the connection I have with the music when spinning a good record but saying that…. Lossless streaming can beat vinyl at times. I have an over 50K invested in my 2 channel stereo so I feel I get fairly good quality sound from any digital or analog music I play. I can and have matched up songs from both sources and have found both to sound better reproducing the music. So it all comes down to your ear and how you prefer it. Super detailed and critical of every detail goes to the digital file. But I don’t normally prefer this. I like a slightly warmed over sound with more soul and this is why I personally prefer vinyl. But again, this changes with music too. If I’m listening to Etta James belt out something soulful and full of feelings then vinyl 100%… But then you have Rage Against the Machine that’s just an attack of cymbals and guitar and I think the digital file is better at reproducing the sound rather than a needle in a groove. I still have the record though….

Excellent video and well thought out! I love it when you do comparisons. Thank you!
Now, here's the other side of the coin. You are a physical media person. Streaming may be convenient, but, it is digital, initially made from digital files and/or sources. That is the main reason that streaming may sound better than a record, especially a vintage OG record which hasn't been remastered. Streaming has it's place, like when you are away from home and/or driving somewhere. We enjoyed streaming when we were driving around in Texas while we were there the last week in April.
When around home, your reasoning for streaming is why record changers were invented. The earliest most supreme example is the Capehart flipover record changer. Yeh, the original ones only played 78's, which maxed out at 16 records, but the last series could be converted to play LP's and the last year in 1949 they were 2-speed.
Moving up almost 2 decades, Seeburg one-upped the idea Capehart had and introduced the album players, starting in 1967. All the models hold 50 LP's, similarly to how a 100-play Seeburg jukebox works, but holds 12" LP's. They came in floor self-contained consoles(I have an HSC3) and component type, the AP1 or 2(I have one of those also). You can select any of the LP's and play one side or both. You can select all-play and it will play both sides of 50 LP's in sequential order. It can play continuously for up to 2 days, without repeating an LP. How's that for long-play?
There are other newer alternatives, like the Accutrac +6 programmable record changer. I have one of those too, in my home theater system. They don't work so well with the current heavy-weight LP's, as it has a problem dropping them and because it also lifts the entire stack up to replay the entire program again. That function uses the power of the belt-driven turntable.
Another option is a vintage record changer. There are some excellent ones out there, but they only play one side of a record(7", 10" or 12") 33 or 45 rpm, but not intermixed. I chose a direct-drive one made by Technics. It comes in handy when I am digitizing records. I can do one at a time or a stack of 6. Record weight doesn't seem to matter. Once I load the record(s), hit the start button and click on record, I can walk away without a care. Using standard interchangeable head shells, I can select the the cartridge which is best for the record(s) I am playing.
Me, with a collection of over 2600 LP's(2/3 digitized as wav lossless files), over 11,000 7" singles and over 3,000 CD's(all digitized), At home, I am my own streaming service. lol ! And, yes, I am probably insane!
Being retired, I don't do alot of road trips, but if I were on the road alot, I'd sure as heck subscribe to a streaming service. 🥰

Wow! You have an amazing collection. What you were talking about reminded me of my parents old console turntable. We used to stack records up on it and they would play one after the other. I do have a Seeburg jukebox. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.

    • @automatedelectronics6062

@@MelindaMurphy On your Seeburg jukebox, if you haven't done it already, there is something known as the "battery trick". Using a 1.5 volt battery, it charges all the toroids and the juke will continuously and sequentially play both sides of each record until all records have been played. The Seeburg Home Stereo Consoles(HSC1,2,3 & 6000 series) and albumplayer(AP1&2) have this feature built in. First time I found out about the HSC's, they used to give them away as grand prizes on the "Newlywed Game Show" on TV. Along with a gift certificate for buying 50 albums from the Spiegel catalog.

If you can't see it, then you can't hear it is the general rule. The only exception is FM radio. I can hear Rush's Spirit of the Radio as I think about it. 🎸🎸🥁🥁 Streaming is going over to the dark side of not actually owning your music, and there can be streaming service costs. I understand the dilemma of needing hands free music while you're doing other things, but there are other options. Classic rock radio stations are a good option; I listen to them when I need hands free music. A multiple CD carousel player is a good option. A lot of times I like to put a CD in my player and just let it replay over and over again. Just put Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood album on replay, and you're hands free in a very very nice way. I can hear that album ten times in a row and never get tired of it! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

A nice TT plugged into a great preamp is fantastic. However, I stream as well. I don’t think they are mutually exclusive. Btw, I have Mofi 8s. Can you say what that speaker directly behind you is? Morning Melinda, I guess I’m your first commentor today ☺️. My answer would be an overall NO, streaming doesn’t “Beat” vinyl IMO. But it Does come in handy for the situations, as you mentioned. It also Depends on the source file. I use Spotify and some recordings are better than others. My streamer DAC sounds amazing. But I’ve compared side by side with the record for myself and friends. SOME sounded pretty close. But in my comparisons, the record always edged the streaming versions in every case. I noticed that the vinyl versions were always Louder, for one thing. I just love the warm sound of vinyl too much to concede to digital. BUT!… I do like to stream albums that I don’t yet have on vinyl. Mainly when I don’t feel like flipping records or when I don’t have time to just chill and listen. My streamer Has inspired me to buy quite a few records, so I’ll give it credit. I don’t have the most expensive streamer (iFi Zen Blue v2) but it does sound pretty amazing in its own rite. Thanks for another morning coffee video. Have a great day :)

I am giving away my age but my only experience with playlists was with cassette tapes, which I used to make from vinyl records. I do not own a streamer and for the time being am sticking with CDs and vinyl. But a few weeks ago, I went to a demo of some very well respected high end electronics at my local dealer. The company's rep exclusively used high res streaming. I found the sound to be ruthlessly revealing of bad recordings, which many pop and rock recordings are, to the point where the results were very fatiguing. Vinyl is so much more listenable and musical. Plus there is just something about having physical media that you can hold in your hand.

Youre not alone in this long time coming epiphany Melinda. In many situations it would be pretty dogmatic to refuse to stream. Now that more people are going to speak out about streaming quality being better, collecting music will become even more for the collectorship aspects of it rather than the need to ensure a proper listen (sentiment vs. utility). That said though, everyone should own copies of what they love and join the adventure of treasure hunting and actively recognizing the higher significance in listening to music you put on yourself, and we should only depend on streaming for passive convenience in certain situations, like cooking and swimming and having company, unless that company has come to look at your sweet collection! Or you their’s! All I know is everyone needs to keep collecting vinyl and CDs and prices of vinyl need to stop going up.
