Membrane proteins synthesized in the neuronal cell body often require long-range transport by molecular motors to reach their final localization in neuronal processes. For example, AMPA receptors (AMPARs), the main glutamatergic receptors involved in fast synaptic transmission, function at dendritic synapses, yet their main site of synthesis is in the cell body.
