This was an amazing moment. But am the only one that is convinced this was lyp-synced. The version is identifical to the studio version. His lyps don't appear to match at several points and then the very end when the music fades to nothing, his lips keep moving with no noise. I hope that I'm wrong here as I'm a fan.
It is definitely lip synched. You can say that without hesitation. But we all know Michael would nail the live too. I don't know the reason that he didn't sing it live, maybe MTV demanded that or he has some condition on his voice or something. But he sang the Jackson 5 musics live right before this. I think he was preparing his live version background music of Billie Jean and it wasn't ready yet for this event so he had to lip sync it, as we know live concert versions are way different from this

Well I think it’s a little different, It’s cause this was like a year or a few months after he made the studio version.
