  • At Johns Hopkins, we offer metastatic breast cancer survivors more than medicine www.hopkinsmedicine.org/breast.... When a cancer patient completes their treatment, they look forward to celebrating their survivorship but for those forced to deal with metastatic disease, such a celebration will not be in their future. The Johns Hopkins Breast Center holds retreats for stage IV breast cancer survivors and the result is a weekend experience that has been transformational for those who attend as a patient, caregiver, or medical provider. Funding for the Johns Hopkins Metastatic Breast Cancer Couples Retreat has been generously provided by The Salisbury Family Foundation.

      Jane, the retreats are open to all patients, not just those who were treated at Johns Hopkins.
      Please contact Mary Capano: mcapano1@jhmi.edu if you would like to attend one of these retreats. FYI, there is currently a waiting list.

    Why have all of the people conceded death? My wife is given a 6 to 12% chance of survival. Someone is in that 6 to 12%. Why not her or any of these people? Yes they cant control it, but why would you give up when there is a chance? If you accept death, it will accept you. You can call me delusional but if i had a terminal disease, i would die with the attitude that i would be one of the few who live, without a doubt in my mind.

      Because in order to prepare oneself emotionally & our families we "hope" to be one of the outliers, but have to make peace with the fact that through the many treatments we have had the cancer continues to progress. Spending ones end time in processing whatever we need to can only be achieved if we are willing to see the need to do it. Unless you have experienced treatment that has brought you close enough to death to know how it feels you can't judge. We feel our bodies failing us knowing that it is a downward spiral. Stamina & propping up oneself with grand hope is able to be mustered in the early years if you have been at this for 5 plus & treatment options are coming to an end you don't have any more tools in the toolbox to fight with. Peace & healing

      So true. I felt this retreat was a way for people to accept defeat. That’s not the message I’d be wanting to convey. They should never give up.

      Keep fighting and prepare for the worst. They aren’t mutually exclusive things.

      One can keep fighting but make peace with death.

    Very moving. The background music was not appropriate at some points I thought .....People don’t understand that stage four metastatic cancer Is not considered curable. So glad that there is a place for women who are dealing with metastatic cancer, it’s a very different reality than treatable disease.

    • @William14094

      You make it sound like people with metastatic cancer have no hope. The video does as well. I don’t think that’s the message that should be conveyed.

    • @melanieortiz712
      @melanieortiz712 2 года назад

      Curable no, but treatable yes! For many it becomes like a chronic disease treating symptoms and fires as they appear but always smoldering. We are entitled to hope.
