  • I received $1,300/mo in Universal Basic Income (UBI) for 2 years & this is what happened. After receiving a medical discharge from the United States Air Force, I was designated a "Disabled Veteran" and now receive about $1,300 a month in disability from the Veterans Administration. This amount is very similar to the $1,000 a month in Universal Basic Income Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang's purposes to give to every American citizen. This money has helped my family and I significantly. This idea of a UBI is also supported by Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.

What Normal people say "I can breathe a bit easier now, I can finally take that vacation after working 40-60 hours each week for many years, I don't have to worry about that bill anymore, I can finally save for my retirement/child's education/emergency fund". TJ Lundt The UBI is untaxed. Also Finland did not scrap the trial; it reached its logical conclusion, They felt it didn’t need restarting which I think is true. Finland already has one of the strongest safety nets of any country in the world; they don’t need UBI right now, but America certainly does. The Odessa shooter was a fired trucker. Expect more tragedies like that to happen if we continue to deny our citizens their basic right to life. Also, a VAT will be used to fund it, not income tax.
      Moreover, the Finland experiment still showed positive results, especially when it came to peoples’ emotional health. The only thing is that people didn’t work more, but they didn’t work less either. Part of the reason was because the sample size chosen was a means-tested one. Actually look into the details of the experiment before citing it, because the study itself supports everything this guy is saying.

    I own a successful business and I support UBI.
    Why is UBI important to me? My employees work very hard every day but due to competition and investor requirements I can't afford to pay my employees what I'd like. They too have and want to pursue their dreams. $1000 a month wouldn't make them not to want to work but it would help them afford to fix their cars, pay for extra curricular studies for their kids to get ahead and hopefully give them the time to get more schooling and advance within the company.
    I completely support Andrew Yang because as a business owner I know in order to compete, we're going to have to automate away jobs. People need help, the future is coming for better or worse.

    • @dm_ex_machina3395
      @dm_ex_machina3395 4 года назад +4

      @Dim Economists have been talking about the application of this for decades. You have to be good at math to be an economist. But, you don't have to be very good at math to understand how this is going to work. It will increase taxes, this is true. In a type of tax that the rest of the world has had for a very long time. You want to know why they use VAT taxes? Because the wealthy, historically, have always been really good at avoiding wealth taxes. However, a baseline Value Added Tax has been effective in every country it's used in. Europe has a VAT of 20%, but the math shows that in the United States, because we're the WEALTHIEST country in the world in the form of consumer power, could make up all the money we need for this plan at only half of that rate. Economists are rarely so bad at math that they get it wrong by half, so even accounting for, well 'accounting' error, with a margin of 2-5% on average, we're still not paying as much a VAT as Europe is. Most countries further east have an even HIGHER VAT tax.
      So, pretty much this tax will make things more expensive. Everything except for food, clothing, and medicine will be 10% more expensive than it is today. Because of this, we can look at how much economic power you gain with the Freedom Dividend quite easily. Whether the UBI is worth the price increase or not depends on your financial circumstances.
      Some examples:
      - If you have no money at all you now have $12'000 per year, which is a net gain even if everything is 10% more expensive (+$12'000 * 0.9 ~= $10'800 extra)
      - If you were very poor and spending only $10'000 a year the stuff you used to buy now costs ~$11'000 because of the 10% price increase but you're getting $12'000 extra so you're still ahead (+$11'000 * 0.9 = $9900 extra)
      - If you were spending $40'000 a year now the same stuff costs $44'000 but with your extra $12'000 it's still a net gain (+$8000 * 0.9 = $7200 extra)
      - If you were spending $60'000 a year now the same stuff costs $66'000 but you're getting an extra $12'000 so it's still a net gain (+$6000 * 0.9 = $5400 extra)
      - If you were spending $100'000 a year now the same stuff costs $110'000 but you're getting an extra $12'000 so it's still a net gain (+$2000 * 0.9 = $1800 extra)
      - If you were spending $120'000 a year now the same stuff costs $132'000 but you're getting an extra $12'000 so you come out exactly even
      - If you were spending $150'000 a year now the same stuff costs $165'000, and the $12'000 is not quite enough to cover the price difference: now you're $15'000 - $12'000 = $3000 poorer than you used to be
      Etc.
      Keep in mind, this is based off how much you are SPENDING, so your value increase goes up or down depending on whether you're buying things that apply to VAT or not. So this breakdown is actually only a generalisation, in the fact that if you spend most of your extra money on things like clothes and food (like most low income families) then you're actually getting more bang for your buck than the rich people who are spending their money on entertainment, jewelry, and fancy cars. Basically, people who spend more than $120'000 a year will be subsidizing people who spend less than $120'000 a year.

I am not going to argue the pros and cons of UBI - but you served in the Air Force, you signed up for that and that is one of the benefits of joining is the medical benefits and long-term disability benefits. If anything -- you should be putting out a video that thanks the Military and the VA for providing these benefits and letting your family have a good life (the military services could use more positive attention to help with recruiting, especially today). But your exchange for the VA & military benefits deal was that you were willing to DIE FOR YOUR COUNTRY. That isn't something everyone is willing to do. @@Mutantmalcolm This is actually a very interesting topic, because he associates the idea of patriotism and service to nation as being inherent to the idea of a UBI. The way Yang has sold his vision of the UBI is to make it a story of a nation which shares its bounty as a dividend, to every shareholder. What are your opinions on the UBI being contingent on a form of "National Service", similar to the Nations of Israel, South Korea, Singapore? Everyone who was enrolled in such a program would be able to apply and receive the UBI, or a supplement if they completed their service. Just think of it! 6 Months or a year to educate you with all the knowledge Yang wants to deliver, community participation and work to help foster integration and a sense of ownership straight to fresh receptive minds, and the subsequent promise of 1,000 a month for the rest of their lives. No one is going to give that up, and if they were willing to avoid it, they weren't the sort of people to be spending 1,000 wisely to begin with.
      It doesn't have to be military, but it definitely could be a sort of "Civics" education, perhaps held during the summers for people from High-School ages to College ages, where they receive the UBI as well as the sort of training Yang wants to deliver, such as financial and marriage counselling, in addition to working and experiencing the differences in life, as well as validating the fact that they're a member of the country, a true stakeholder and no one can take away that service from them. Anyone who was willing and able should be permitted to join.

      I respect your stated motives, but you're missing the point. If everyone gets 1000 a month, you're simply resetting zero. UBI, in concept is fantastic, but you NEED a socialist leaning population AND regulations up the whazoo to keep folks from exploiting each other. You implement both those things and UBI would work as stated, you don't, and you've simply created a trickle up economy of wealth transfer back to the top.

It's also an argument for increased minimum wage and enhanced social safety nets. It wasn't an argument for UBI because UBI is specifically designed to address the threat of automation, which this young man didn't mention at all. It is a good source! It doesn't give a full picture, since it doesn't let us study the effects of a whole community getting the UBI and what effects it would have on the local economy and quality of life collectively, but it does give a valuable, limited perspective.

      sayjai bao Yang’s UBI isn’t even though-our. The VAT tax that he plans to introduce, won’t cover the costs of UBI. Yang is relying on increased spending. Well, what if Americans don’t increase spending? Poor Americans will face a new tax, small-business owners will pay 10% on all inventory via the VAT tax, and spending will be cut elsewhere...On top of that, the poor Americans that UBI is supposed to help already recieve ~$9,000 in Welfare Checks, Food Stamps, etc...So the $12,000 per year (9,000 after VAT) is equal to or less than the benefits they already receive. Is Yang trying to trick poor people by offering free money? Or is it the people who THINK they are helping, when they’re actually harming (enabling)? (Asking honestly)

    Holy cow. Good video.
    I am currently military, but I had my real estate salesperson license before joining. I didn't do so well. At the time I was attempting it, I was waiting tables at two different places because I was trying to support my wife and two kids. Needless to say, I couldn't devote the time needed to be successful.

He is a Class A problem solver with a brilliant mind, great temperament, knowledge of issues, and always responds quickly and thoughtfully to all questions asked of him. Sounds like you may need to check out more of his interviews. Of course, you don't know that he will not get the nomination. So, I wouldn't be so sure. He is doing quite well for an underdog. And, he couldn't possibly fund the amount needed to run a campaign like this. Indie route is interesting and I had thought of it myself, but, probably not the smart way to go. How do I know? Because Andrew chose not to run Indie and Andrew is an incredibly smart guy. M A T H !

      @food4 thought Yang didn't run as independent because when was the last time we had an independent that became president? Not in a very long time. He knows that it has realistically become a 2 party system (unfortunately) over the years, and strategized the best way to run. But as he has stated time and again, it's not left, not right, but forward. There's a reason why he's only 1 of 2 candidates that have swung double digit percentage of Trump supporters in his direction, the other being Bernie. But Bernie's FJG is not scalable to support the millions who will be inevitably displaced by automation, nor does his FJG proposal address those in rural areas that are nowhere in close vicinity for a realistic commute to any type of federal job, again, millions of people.

It takes a special kind of person that has the patience, compassion, dedication, etc needed to care for children or the elderly (so many have dementia, Alzheimer's, other illnesses). So if the options are hard manual labor or taking care of children or elderly, then this is not something that will be feasible for everyone. I believe it is still a good idea but not in place of UBI, but in addition to UBI. FJB doesn't help the elderly on Social Security barely making ends meet (they don't need a job, they need a little bit more money so they can stop rationing medications and can buy fresh fruits/vegetables instead of processed food. FJB doesn't address taking care of caregivers and stay at home parents.

    The point of UBI is not to replace salaries, like some people think. Very few people want to live on 500-1000 dollars (UBI rates are usually discussed in that area). If you're in college or a young adult, yeah okay maybe that's enough, but if you want to live decently or start a family forget about it, no way, you will also need to work.
    The point of UBI is so people don't have to worry about if they can afford medicine/clothes/insurance/rent/etc for themselves and their kids. It's far better for families and society at large to keep people from poverty or going into a crisis and living less stressfully and give them more chance to become productive, than it is to let them enter that crisis and then have them barely survive on welfare or become homeless or sick. The government will lose that money one way or the other, better use it to keep people stable with UBI, than to aid them with welfare or unemployment benefits after damage has been done.

    • @MarkArandjus

      @TJ Lundt Not taxing the lower classes would give them more money, yes, but not enough money. The lower classes don't pay that much tax to begin with. UBI at just 400$ per month ends up being 4800$ by the end of the year, lower classes don't pay that much taxes (I'm speaking for the US). No income tax instead of UBI would be a bad deal for those struggling financially.

    • @skoda8349
      @skoda8349 5 лет назад +3

      @TJ Lundt This still does not answer the question of a runaway economy and automation, leaving behind most Americans. • @I.m-Me
      @I.m-Me 4 года назад +3

      There is no reason you can't do both. Not having a federal minimum would be very bad for a lot of states whose representatives would use UBI as an excuse to pay people less and less, potentially making life even harder than it was before.
      Him saying that their medical bills are over $2,000/mo is also an excellent argument in favor of universal healthcare / single payer healthcare / Medicare for all. If he had all doctor appointments, medical equipment, therapies, medications, and caregivers covered, UBI would do something more than just pay half of the medical bills. UHC would keep everyone on a more even footing so that UBI could provide still-needed relief.
      (Do not buy into "access to healthcare", because that is generally contingent on your finances.)
      Further, consider UBS (S = Services). We already have things like police, fire, some education - all of which some politicians are attempting to privatize! We should instead expand things like Healthcare (Medicare for All, including optical, dental, & hearing), Education (childcare, pre-K, gradeschool, trade, & all higher ed.), Shelter (HUD), Food (SNAP), Transportation (mass public & bike/scooter share), Information (Internet & basic phone ("Obamaphone")), & UBI (Social Security), such that nobody can fall into the trap of the gap between being poor enough to be covered and actually making enough money to live.
      You can simultaneously combat poverty, unemployment, homelessness, & climate change by building a jobs guarantee into the Green New Deal. Put people to necessary work in R&D, manufacturing, mitigation/weatherization, or even green roofs, community gardens, & reforestation.
      All of these things are possible. Money in more pockets is more that will grease the wheels of the economy and increase tax revenue to contribute to the UBS fund. Tax the rich - eliminate billionairehood, or even ridiculous millionairehood, since they're all tax dodgers. Also, simplify the tax code, because if there is a comprehensive safety net there shouldn't need to be such complexity; eliminate loopholes. Stop endless war, downsize bloated military, eliminate use of mercenaries/contractors.
      Just some basic thoughts on basic income.

      The difference between ssdi vs ssi is significant.
      Ubi will replace cash like supplement such as snap, tdnf, if the person opt out of such . But 1k a month is on average $300-700 higher than those support, and it still be unconditional, cash (instead of voucher), and cheaper to provide (no case worker, no printing of voucher, no distribution, significant reduction of cost in bureaucracy). And if the person really is getting less, he or she could choose to opt out of freedom dividend.

    As an Army veteran who has very recently started receiving a similar amount monthly in service-connected disability, I can attest to the amount of relief that I have in my life now with regards to my financial situation.
    Although my situation is not nearly as grave as yours, it's been very difficult for me to seek a meaningful life working shit job after shit job, doing so out of some externally-induced obligation to be a "good citizen" while having that clash with my major depression and anxiety that really turned my life trajectory for the worse in the military and onward to my adult civilian life. Thank goodness that I never fell into hard drugs or became an alcoholic, but I just couldn't maintain a job for two years. That, and amassing student loan debt of which I am in default, has really given me a very bleak outlook on projecting into the future.
    It wasn't until Dec. 2018 that I finally decided to give the VA a try and they've helped me out tremendously, most notably with establishing a service-connected disability (major depress & anxiety, Achilles Tendonitis on both feet) and vocational rehab & employment. I established the Achilles Tendonitis compensation first and I was getting around $275 a month, which was a nice supplement to my school security job. During the summer, after going to the psychologist and appealing the initial PTSD claim (for which I had no documentation) with major depression & anxiety (for which I had documentation that was not in the VA records), I got approved over a month later, increasing my monthly compensation by 4x as much. I was quite fortunate in that regard, because I had left my school security job a couple of weeks prior (did two school years total) because it's a very isolating job where you don't get treated with dignity and it has a lot of liability to it.
    Now I don't have to succumb to the pressure of getting a shit job and, with the help of my vocational rehab & employment counselor, I can register for school again so that I can have my plan B in place (my plan A being a game designer for tabletop roleplaying game products). Even after getting what's essentially a basic income (because it's definitely not universal), I still support Andrew Yang's run for the presidency, because I don't believe people behaving out of desperation and getting shit jobs is good for their overall health nor for societal health. Having no control over your waking hours fucking sucks, whether you're employed or not.
