Chanel was such an amazing combination of good and evil. If you are born in a poor house and rise to the very top , there are undoubtedly some horrifying casualties. To have unbridled drive and ambition in those days was so unusual for a woman. In this interview she seemed so very angry. Everything she had and did and accomplished did not make her happy.

I met Madonna once and compared her to Gabrielle and she said that was the biggest compliment she ever got because she always admired her, because she succeeded when women needed men to succeed and yet the name remained hers and she remained mademoiselle. I also asked her what she thought of Karl and she said that she had no interest for him because he was using the name of someone else to get notoriety. She said that buying Chanel made by Karl Lagerfeld was not buying Chanel at all and thet Chanel died when Coco stopped making Chanel clothes. That's why Madonna mostly dresses from designers who run their own house under their own name, like Gaultier, Mcqueen, etc,...
I thought that was a very smart comment.
That's also why i refuse to buy anything which is not made by the person who bears the name on the label.
It would be like buying a painting in the Picasso style but not made by picasso but just someone who decided he was going to be the new designer for picasso. This is ridiculous.

      Each to their own...🤷🏻‍♂️
      However...it seems daft to me.
      ● B/c it essentially means u need to live in the lifetime of any Designer whose clothes u want to wear.
      ● No Client can live THAT long, lol.
      ● Additionally...it means ur choosing labels purely b/c a founder is still in charge.
As opposed to b/c a particular brand's style suits ur colouring, body-type etc.
      ● Then wot about things like 'Versace'.
After Gianni's death...the brand became just "Versace". According to ur principle...that'd mean the brand is now 'outta bounds'.
      ● Even though it's the same brand. Just designed by his sister Donatella.
      ● Ur 'rule' would also apply to Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Ungaro, Escada, Ferragmo, Gian Franco-Ferre, Moschino, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Sonia Rykiel, Missoni, Laura Biagotti, Gucci - (Original Founder long dead), Fendi (Ditto), Pucci (Ditto), Valentino (Ditto - Namesake Designer retired from his brand), Calvin Klein (Ditto), Donna Karen (Ditto), Louis Vuittion, Roger Vivier, Charles Jourdan, Bruno Magli, Maud Frizon. Even brands like Cartier, Van Cleef Arpels, Most Men's Luxury watch brands.
      ● I'm sure u see the point I'm making...🤔
      ● Otherwise I'm impressed @ how u manage 2 get dressed. Or wot u buy. (Within the Luxury apparel sector...😅😉)

The only reasons COCO did not get a VERY CLOSE haircut and perhaps jail time right after WWII:
    1. She had some very "close friends" (protectors) in very high places and she knew their "dark secrets" (allegedly) and would "tell all" to save her own skin.
    2. Her Brand was already well known throughout the fashion world and post-war France was desperate for some good economic news and "to get the economy moving again." (sound familiar?). So it was expedient to put on a happy face and let bygones be bygones .

That documentary was really fabulous. It’s so old now but thank goodness we were able to actually see her grand niece Gabrielle Brunie speak. That is all primary source material which would not be available today. It gives real insight to hear her niece speak as she was there with her when she was very old and dying. Chanel could be mean and judgmental but I also suspect that there was another really wonderful, fun, funny and sociable side to her where if she liked you, she would be a fabulous friend. I like the way she spontaneously lunges forward at the journalist at the end and has a laugh with him grabbing his arms. She had a great deal of pent up transgenerational trauma that was a result of her abandonment in childhood, her convent years and all her struggles to survive as a woman at the turn of the century. Her story was truly one which many women went through at the time: trying to survive in a man’s world using their feminine wiles and battling all the way. I think it’s very difficult for people to forgive her for her affair with Schellenburg, and that would certainly form part of her anger towards the world in that interview - but at the same time - it doesn’t diminish the great body of her work and achievements. Many famous people and creatives have made huge mistakes like that, and paid dearly. I think Chanel also paid a huge price personally and mentally for her transgressions with the German high command and people need to also practice forgiveness. You can see in some of those interviews that she seemed almost drugged up or reacting like someone who took prescription drugs or painkillers or narcotics. She’s rather shaky, jerky and belligerent when she talks, which is a sign of a drug-taker. She was taking morphine when she was old to help her sleep but I imagine there may have been other drugs she took to assist her to just get by each day. These days they would be mood-altering drugs but who knows what she was on back in the 60s?

    She was a virulent Jew-hater.
    She collaborated with the Nazis.
She slept with an SS officer.
Before the Free French could shave her hair and put her in prison, she excsped to neutral Lausanne, Switzerland.
She also worked as a spy for the Nazis.
But the worst thing was that after she sold her Chanel No. 5 to Wertheimer who was a French Jew and he made money off the perfume, the witch wanted it back and she tried to get him sent to his death at Auchewitz.
It didn't work because Wertheimer gave Chanel No. 5 to a Christian to hold until hopefully WW 2 ended.

I think Wertheimer escaped to the United Staes before the Nazi occupation of France, so there was no danger of Auschwitz or any other concentration camp for him. Nor did Chanel try to have him sent there, according to my reading. Chanel did try to leverage the Nazi occupation, and the fact the Wertheimers were Jews, to have her Parfums Chanel interests returned to her, however. I don't know if or to what degree she was antisemitic otherwise. She did initially do business with them in the 1920's.

That is a rather harsh judgement about a woman you are reviewing in history.
I don't imagine she was a soft, comfortable woman. She was someone who survived rejection from every corner of life. Not good enough to remain with the family & being disposed of like trash. Having siblings that tore her apart bcos of her birth -- & who later extorted her for money.
Growing up a second class status person in that school too. Probably surrounded by blue-blooded elite baggage who felt even more superior by putting her down.
In fact, she experienced that rejection scenario over again & again. Also by lovers who died or eventually moved on to more pedigreed women. Also by ladies in that realm who might've admired her style & flair (perhaps even her popularity), but also despised her for not being one of them as well as going this non-traditional route. She posed a big risk to their way of life.
I can understand how all that could've developed a core of iron in her. There might've existed a great rage & unforgiveness over the injustices of society & the poor hand she was dealt. It could be tricky for such a person who was not coddled & protected to have compassion & understanding for others.
It doesn't mean she did not have any tenderness or capacity for caring.
Her brief success with entertainment (over the Coco song number) clearly proved she possessed a stage presence of some sort. That confidence, charisma, smarts & humor likely paved the way to those higher & higher aristrocratic social circles that would've been denied to her otherwise.
People can be so self- righteous about ambition. Men driven to accomplish something are admired while women are scorned. Wretched double standard. It is also 100% acceptable for men to despoil women for their own convenience & pleasure, but people still find it reprehensible for those women to find any enjoyment or advancement in that exploitation.
In society, the truth is some women are put on a pedestal & protected while others are thrown to the wolves to fend for themselves. It is rather unfair to be harsh & judgemental when such a woman manages to make a better life out of that.
Coco Chanel charmed & clawed her way up from the lowest rings of poverty in a wholly patriarchal & almost feudal system where birthright was key. Most cannot fully understand that rigid society today.
As the other gentleman noted, Chanel upset the status quo in the fashion industry too. She fought against male designer driven dictates to find styles that wholly flattered women while giving them more flexibility & freedom for how they lived. She proved that a woman does better understand that sensibility. Her unique style stood out for the times, and ultimately drove her fashion aesthetic.
Choosing aristrocratic, powerful &/or wealthy lovers helped improve her status & understanding of that world. It does not mean she didn't experience some true affection &/or passion along the way. Never being chosen by the "right" man as wife can leave a deep scar on some women's esteem. No matter your wealth or acclaim, that is rejection that not all women can easily overcome.
In the end, surviving & even thriving against great odds ought to be something we appreciate (if not admire).
As to Chanel's ultimate salvation, that is a matter between her & God. (Having a Nazi lover doesn't make her one.) Besides, there are pious people that appear to do all the right things in life, including good works. Underneath that law-abiding & friendly facade, they can still have discord & hate in their heart. Some things are only known to God.

I think that what elevates humans is not where they came from, although if people wish to work in fashion, it helps if they're born into money and prestige. The industry started out as an elitist circle, and unlike today where vloggers, and influencers sometimes get to secure a front row seat, fashions were traditionally shown only to the rich who could actually afford it and a ton of journalists to cover it. People like Chanel capitalized on their talent, and some, on their intellect, and generally, educated or well-bred people, regardless of their social standing often standout among those who aren't. Perceptions aren't something you can control, and I don't think it's anyone's responsibility explaining why you are who you are, and why you're so different from other people because those who know you would automatically understand, while those who don't will likely judge you. I didn't grow up in an orphanage like Chanel, but I had a very working class upbringing that focused on education, morals and core values in a country that no one truly cares that much about, the Philippines. Despite that, it never crossed my mind to be ashamed of both my Filipino and Chinese heritage.

BBC2 repeated the newer documentary 'Coco Chanel: Unbuttoned' and there's an additional theory that her adored nephew, Andre Palasse (who some speculate could actually have been her son!) was a prisoner of war. And that may be why she made those Nazi connections, in desperation, to save him (he managed to be set free).
Of course, some also pooh-pooh the notion of Mme Chanel being a member of the French resistance and suggest this is newer misinformation to cleanse her bad reputation.
I have no idea, but these two points are worth considering.
