Exactly. America had very little strategic importance for the UK in those days. It wasn't the nerve centre of the British empire, or anything. It was a small collection of colonies just like any other. The war was basically a cross between a Civil War between those who wanted independence and those that wanted to remain British subjects (which is how many citizens actually considered themselves (and it wasn't a tiny minority, there were a huge number of citizens who didn't want independence)) and a pseudo-proxy war against the French as a sideline to the main battles happening in Europe.
How important, though, were the Colonies to Britain?: They were very important as a source of raw materials, particularly agricultural materials and tobacco. But the Colonies were also important as a source of pride. We think in terms of `the jewel in the crown' applied to India, but that term was really first applied to the American Colonies. My question is what inspired the bakers of London to decided 320 years later to apologize for the Great fire. Without context that would be like if the railway suddenly decided to apologize for the death of the 1,000 people in the 1871 Peshtigo Fire. (being as reason is actually known as the likely cause of this fire as opposed to the Great Chicago Fire the same day, it seemed the more apt example)

I chose Waterloo because while the French managed to recover from Trafalgar, Waterloo was what ended their rivalry with the UK and established Britain as superior. Though in hindsight should be an honourable mention at least WW1 was tricky but looking at the history Britain did not change that much from it. Same class structure, same foreign policy, same position as the dominant power (more or less). The most influential thing that can be said for it is that it set the stage for WW2 but that's already on the list. Though were this a list for France or Germany, it would be on the list. Certainly see why you disagree however. Suez on the other hand ended an imperialist mandate which Britain had more or less had for centuries, that we could just send in the fleet and kick our enemies if they didn't do what we told them. From there we were no longer an independent power, whatever hope their was for keeping the empire vanished and we had to re-evaluate what our role in the modern world was. Just my view though
Although I don't know enough about that period in history to really respond in any detail it seems to me that the Empire was already in severe decline by the time of Suez and that the Crisis really has more symbolic relevance than anything else. The opposite to that might be the Battle of Hastings which clearly and identifiably altered the course that history would have taken had it not happened. I do find it interesting though how people tend to over-emphasise the recent past. For instance in your list 5 events happened during or since the Victorian era. 8 events on your list happened in the last several hundred years with only 1 event representing the entire period between the Roman occupation and the Act of Union. I always remember in a Q (music magazine) article in the 90's when a Cast album was rated as about the 5th best album ever. Well, in 2018 I doubt Cast would get in the top 2000 albums of all time in the same publication. And so may it be with the Suez Crisis.
Not true, as I said British foreign policy was completely transformed by Suez, the effect was dubbed by Thatcher as being ''Suez Syndrome'' as British politicians overnight went from thinking they could do anything to nothing. The empire had declined but the attitude was damage control, Suez brought that to acceptance and established Britain's status as an underling to the US which more or less continues today. I cited the Norman invasion, the Glorious Revolution, the foundation of Anglicanism and the English Civil War and cited the Normans as the most important on the list so I gave the period between Romans and Union a fair wack. Furthermore, I think it's worth considering the UK is a recent country. I don't think it would be apt to do a list on important UK events and find myself listing off events which mostly precede the country's inception. But like I said, the UK has such an insanely large history that you can't condense it like this and the importance of each event will create argument because evaluating long term impact is always subjective

Napoleon was all but done even before Waterloo occurred. Much like Hitler, he had lost the core of his army in Russia and the number of experienced and well trained troops were few at Waterloo. Even if Britain had lost, Prussia, Austria or Russia again would have kept him in check. Prussia came to the aide of Britain at the crucial moment and saved Wellington. Also note the majority of Troops under Wellingtons command weren't British- but Hanoverian,Dutch, Belgium etc. I'd probably change it up for either the Battle of Agincourt/Battle of Britain/Battle of the Somme etc.
JJ P You're not going to take Waterloo away from Britain. When you're attacking on the flank, it naturally looks a "being saved" move. The point is, Britain chased Napoleon out of Egypt, Portugal, Spain and then beat them in Waterloo. If America was on the same continent you would be in the same position as Britain if you were lucky. You do know most soldiers who fought for there countries in ww2 was conscripted. I take issue with 1066 being 1 in terms of value to the present. Let me explain how and why I'd put a different way to look at 10 as 1. Instead of just the Protectorate/Interregnum, look at the 17th century as a play in 3 acts (or no more than 4) trying to adjust or come to some agreement as to the "modern" (or not medieval) relationship of the king to Parliament. Parliament becomes one, the first act, but temporarily in charge (execution Charles/Cromwell rules). It either ends with the Restoration or the Restoration is an act itself. Then you have the Exclusion Crisis, since Parliament is protesting Divine Right again in relation to the C of E, if not all Protestantism. Finally, you have the Glorious Revolution, which is a ridiculous oversight in not chronicling what emerges at the end: King-in-Parliament. Neither ruler nor representatives are sovereign; both must act jointly to work together. You don't get Constitutional Monarchy, much less a sovereign reigning but not ruling without this. And yes, I am a historian and have taught British history on the college level.

So you basically got the restoration, and i guess the civil war as a result of the commonwealth. But you should not have omitted the glorious revolution. By allowing parliment to basically pick the monarch, and by picking someone who had no interest in ruling, thr glorious revolution ended any further question of who governs england. It established the monarch as largely a figurehead with parliment doing all of the real governing work. Easily more important than half your list.

Although I don't know enough about that period in history to really respond in any detail it seems to me that the Empire was already in severe decline by the time of Suez and that the Crisis really has more symbolic relevance than anything else. The opposite to that might be the Battle of Hastings which clearly and identifiably altered the course that history would have taken had it not happened.
I do find it interesting though how people tend to over-emphasise the recent past. For instance in your list 5 events happened during or since the Victorian era. 8 events on your list happened in the last several hundred years with only 1 event representing the entire period between the Roman occupation and the Act of Union. I always remember in a Q (music magazine) article in the 90's when a Cast album was rated as about the 5th best album ever. Well, in 2018 I doubt Cast would get in the top 2000 albums of all time in the same publication. And so may it be with the Suez Crisis.
Not true, as I said British foreign policy was completely transformed by Suez, the effect was dubbed by Thatcher as being ''Suez Syndrome'' as British politicians overnight went from thinking they could do anything to nothing. The empire had declined but the attitude was damage control, Suez brought that to acceptance and established Britain's status as an underling to the US which more or less continues today.
I cited the Norman invasion, the Glorious Revolution, the foundation of Anglicanism and the English Civil War and cited the Normans as the most important on the list so I gave the period between Romans and Union a fair wack. Furthermore, I think it's worth considering the UK is a recent country. I don't think it would be apt to do a list on important UK events and find myself listing off events which mostly precede the country's inception.
But like I said, the UK has such an insanely large history that you can't condense it like this and the importance of each event will create argument because evaluating long term impact is always subjective

Napoleon was all but done even before Waterloo occurred. Much like Hitler, he had lost the core of his army in Russia and the number of experienced and well trained troops were few at Waterloo. Even if Britain had lost, Prussia, Austria or Russia again would have kept him in check. Prussia came to the aide of Britain at the crucial moment and saved Wellington. Also note the majority of Troops under Wellingtons command weren't British- but Hanoverian,Dutch, Belgium etc. I'd probably change it up for either the Battle of Agincourt/Battle of Britain/Battle of the Somme etc.
JJ P You're not going to take Waterloo away from Britain. When you're attacking on the flank, it naturally looks a "being saved" move. The point is, Britain chased Napoleon out of Egypt, Portugal, Spain and then beat them in Waterloo.

I take issue with 1066 being 1 in terms of value to the present. Let me explain how and why I'd put a different way to look at 10 as 1. Instead of just the Protectorate/Interregnum, look at the 17th century as a play in 3 acts (or no more than 4) trying to adjust or come to some agreement as to the "modern" (or not medieval) relationship of the king to Parliament. Parliament becomes one, the first act, but temporarily in charge (execution Charles/Cromwell rules). It either ends with the Restoration or the Restoration is an act itself. Then you have the Exclusion Crisis, since Parliament is protesting Divine Right again in relation to the C of E, if not all Protestantism. Finally, you have the Glorious Revolution, which is a ridiculous oversight in not chronicling what emerges at the end: King-in-Parliament. Neither ruler nor representatives are sovereign; both must act jointly to work together. You don't get Constitutional Monarchy, much less a sovereign reigning but not ruling without this. And yes, I am a historian and have taught British history on the college level.

So you basically got the restoration, and i guess the civil war as a result of the commonwealth. But you should not have omitted the glorious revolution. By allowing parliment to basically pick the monarch, and by picking someone who had no interest in ruling, thr glorious revolution ended any further question of who governs england. It established the monarch as largely a figurehead with parliment doing all of the real governing work. Easily more important than half your list.
