Jeff Healey, Lost Film From 1983

- From my 16mm archives - I found this lost interview and performance by the late Jeff Healey with a group of his high school friends in a Canadian educational film about careers for kids graduating high school titled "Making It Young". The film explores many young Canadian people who are making their careers happen while they are still teenagers. I transferred this reel with my own Eiki Telecine. Enjoy!

This is definitely Jeff Healey and some pals from High School, including Jeff LeBar on bass. But this is not the band Blue Direction.
The other band members are not really on camera, but if you have some more info on this please post it here...
@@FranLab Blue Direction consisted of Jeff, me, Jeremy Littler (bass) and Graydon Chapman (drums). We played clubs around toronto from 1981 to 1984. The bassist shown here is definitely Jeff LeBar (now deceased), who was a friend and schoolmate of Jeff's. You are right, the drummer in the video is not visible, but it is most certainly not Graydon, or at least, those aren't his drums. This video appears to have been shot in the music room at Etobicoke Collegiate, which was Jeff's high school.
@@robq Unfortunately I cannot edit the video after it is posted, but I can pin your comment as a correction.
@@robq could that be Bryan Humphries on drums? he went to ECI too I think?
@@darlenestimson3641 Right around 0:40 someone sits down at the drums; that's definitely not Bryan. No idea who it is.
Just a few short years later, this young man participated in one of the greatest pieces of 80s cinema ever dedicated to celluloid, Roadhouse🙇♂️.
a great film! he was taken from us far too young
I had JEFF’s first album which was wondrous.
Jeff Buckleys first album wasn’t bad either. My friends always got the pair of them mixed up and I could never work out why!??!!!
I do hope you were being sarcastic. "Roadhouse" was a lousy film, despite Healey's great playing, although it was nowhere near as cringeworthy and awful as Swayze's "Dirty Dancing" 😖. And then there was "Roadie", with Meatloaf 🤮......
Great movie and what a great band to be playing behind the fence.
Road House is a masterpiece
I jammed with Jeff years ago at Dominics in Grand Rapids Michigan. He had performed earlier in the evening and came to the Blues jam at Dominics after his show
He played my 75 black strat through my 63 Super Reverb while I played harp along side of him. He was a very talented musician and a super nice dude!
dam, keeep this alive as much as possible
Jeff was a cute 17-year-old, but that speaking voice made him sound a decade older. His incredible talent was obvious. Rest in peace.
He had a show on CBC called "my kind of jazz" it was on the jazz recordings of the 1920s. Great show. Bringing back a lot of memories.
He seems so mature for high school age. I loved him in Roadhouse. He was dripping with raw talent and he was an incredibly genuine soul. 41 is way too young. Im 42. They say only the good die young. I lost losts of friends to drugs and wrecks. He seemd like an angel on Earth. He was def 1 in a billion.
Saw and met Jeff 3 times He was also a trumpet player in a jazz band. True player Respect to this channel
Jeff appeared in one interview segment before this in a Canadian children's tv program called Cucumber. This is very rare material, Fran!
Yep was gonna post that, you beat me to it.
Good to see you here, Ted! I didn't know that you were a subscriber to FranLab!
Is it on RUclips?
I got a cucumber once for Christmas. It had a rotating head and you had to put batteries in it. I've still no clue what to use it for. The weird thing was that it tasted like shit.
He was very well spoken even at that age!
Thanks Fran. Being a big Jeff Healey fan and being lucky enough to own a few records of his this was very interesting. World class player and the clip of him playing with Sass Jordon (a fantastic Canadian rock singer) and another with Stevie Ray Vaughan are both epic.
I always loved him in Roadhouse!
"The Name is Dalton"!
Nice to see the set was free of broken glass.
WOW Fran! This is soooo cool! Jeff was a great artist, and you are too for saving this little nugget of history
The look on Jeff's face at the end of the song was priceless and showed his love of playing. Nice to see him as a young man
My gosh, what a treasure you have found. Many thanks for sharing, Fran.
listen closely. jeff healey was a teenager here & still spoke like a mature adult male. take a moment & listen to the way the average person in their 20s / 30s speaks today. listen to commercials, news reporters, youtubers, etc.... people in general. their speaking style mostly sounds like a 5-10 year old grade schooler, or a teacher speaking to a 5 to 10 year old. i've noticed this in the past 10 to 15 years. it's getting worse as time goes on.
Hi Fran it is nice to see that old footage of Jeff. I got to see in concert on 3 different occasions during the 1980s Jeff and his band play in Calgary and in Toronto and the shows were top notch!!! I miss those days sometimes and thank you for upping this vid.
Thanx 4 sharing this bit of your film library.
Thanks for posting this! A rare piece....Jeff grew up on Bonnyview and walked down my street, Minstrel, every day after high school to Bonnyview with his friends, carrying his guitar. He is missed!
I saw Jeff Healey in my hometown Vercheres, Quebec in the ‘80s. It was incredible! All my band at the time went to his show (in the local bar) and we were flabbergasted by his talent and his technique. A musical giant! So sad he passed away so young. But he left an indelible trace in our memory.
Amazing footage of a true legend of guitar RIP Jeff listened to most days God bless 🙏🏻🌹
Thanks Fran-We Love Jeff !!!
The biggest disability we can have is to not believe in ourselves. How right he is. Rest In Peace Jeff Healey, you are sadly missed.
He always starts off hot... Wow, what a voice and thoughtfulness for a young person!
What a great artist ! Notes straight from the heart. What a joy !
Wow. Thank you for sharing this. He was such a talent.
The first time I saw him was his performance of See The Light on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
That performance really blew me away, and I saved up to get that album as soon as I could.
Those were the days, when we mowed lawns or shoveled snow for our neighbors in order to make some spending cash with which to buy records. Back when most record stores actually had at least a smattering of music worth listening to and worth spending your hard earned cash on.
I to first saw Jeff on the Johnny Carson show. My Aunt And Uncle let stay up to see it. Later on The Jeff came to Cleveland, Ohio to promote his up coming a album "See the Light". He also mentioned the movie Road House. The concert was at Peabodys in the Flats. I was about 14 ithink. What a show. Wow. See The Light is still one of my favorite albums. What an awesome stringer.
I never knew he was blind.
Awesome Franny!
Jeff was so special ❤
Thank you!
This is GOLD!!!
Thanks for sharing this Fran .
Thank you 💕
Thanks Fran. I really enjoyed the short video of Jeff Healey.
I hope someday soon someone does a documentary on Jeff Healey! This man was so inspirational!!!!! Someone else suggested it should be on Netflix and I totally agree!
O.K. Three things to say...
1) What a rare find. Awesome.
2) I did'nt know he was blind.
and
3) I did'nt know he died. What a great loss.
Wow this is amazing ! Thanks for posting this🙏 i just bought the roadhouse lost soundtracks 2024 cant wait to listen to it
I got to see Jeff play in '81 in the Canadian Stage Band Festival. I was in the jazz choir of a competing high school and at the time I was oblivious, but all the other guitarists could tell there was something special about him.
Oh man. I have a couple of his CD's around here somewhere. He passed way too soon. Thanks for sharing this, Fran!
I used to hang out with Jeff in Toronto when I was in college in the mid 80s in a bar called "Chicago's". He was a sweet and funny guy and I knew at the time he was destined for fame. Sadly I did not know just how short would be the period of time he would enjoy it. Miss ya, Jeff!
Our local radio station still plays Jeff almost every day.
He used to work at JazzFM in Toronto. They re-ran his show for years but have unfortunately stopped.
Thank you so much for sharing this piece of music history , close to my heart as I had the great pleasure of jamming with Jeff a few years prior to this.He was a prodigy growing up in a home surrounded by music and love. I crossed paths with hm many times over my life at record shows as his Mom and Dad were both collectors of vinyl as well as Jeff and he would always be at the shows talking rare vinyl and guest artists on bands that were one offs. He had encyclopedic knowledge of many styles of music. A huge los for so many. Rest In Peace my dear old friend
Jeff's career was amazing and within releasing his first album "See The Light" he was playing to huge audiences had a well-received movie under his belt! Plus had the cream of music Royalty becoming fans and being asked to play with them, one of Jeff's biggest admires in Beatle George Harrison! Wss asked to play one of his best known songs My Guitar Gently Weaps! And what a wonderful combination it was!
excerpt..he was awesome in Roadhouse!
Healy was the only good thing about that movie in my opinion.
This is incredible footage! Thank you!
I've never heard of the guy, but looking at this short movie, he surely was talented. Cool gear too!
Jeff Healey, now there's a name I've not heard in a long time.
This is great, love me some Jeff Healey! Really cool Fran.
What a Legend
Miss this man and his talent immensely
I love lost footage
I used to go to his bar here in Toronto occasionally.
His band (around 1982 or so) played at a battle of the bands at a local highschool in my home town in Oakville, Ontario. Even then I knew he would go on to great things despite his band not winning the contest. He is definitely missed.
Legend
He always had a baby face and the voice of a mature man. Gone too soon.
Thank you for sharing!!!
Great find I was fortunate to see Jeff live a few times but one thing that always remained with him was his humbled wiseness that remain with him throughout his life.
Wow, a great film.
Thank you for this video❤️
This is so awesome Fran!
I really liked Jeff, saw him first time on the classic, “roadhouse”. Awesomeness
I saw him in Ybor City in 88 or 89 and he knocked the house down.
The First time I ever saw Jeff Healey was in the film Road House, starring Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot and Ben Gazarra. He, Jeff and his band, were absolutely brilliant, and following that I went out and bought his Album. It's a shame he wasn't more widely acknowledged and appreciated here in the UK in his short life. Taken far too young.
I just watched Fran's recent video about chocolate flavored cereal, and in reading the comments I discovered that many of the comments people tried to post *here about Jeff Healy* somehow ended up in the comment field for the cereal advertisement video !
Incredible. What an amazing humble guy. Roadhouse shot him into mainstream audiences worldwide My god what an incredible guitarist
RIP Jeff you did your best, you will live in your music.
Jeff Healy is a legend. RIP Legend.
I was a big fan of Jeff, and one summer I took some friends to see him at the Kee to Bala. The show was awesomes, and later, we made our way onto the bus for a quick meet and greet. I'm happy to report that Jeff Healey was such a real one that he was perfectly comfortable meeting fans in his tighty-whities 🤣
Oh thank you Fran i am a huge fan of Jeff RIP never was given a fair shot as other musicians i think. Awesome jazz player to boot
Wow. He was one of those people who never aged. Or in his case, sadly, never had a chance to, I guess.
I remember seeing this in the late 80s on Canadian TV. Was living in Cape Breton at the time.
legend...only word to describe him
His voice never changed
Very neat. I grew up in Canada. London & Kintore, Ontario.
I met jeff in 1986. Great guy.
Thanks
My band opened up for him a very long time ago in Toronto.
Get Jeff's album 'See the Light'! He was a vastly underated guitar player and singer. The film 'Road House' was really only watchable for the few clips of Jeff's amazing playing... RIP
The names Dalton!!
I saw Jeff open for Robert Cray at Place des Arts in Montreal. Cray was NOT happy about having to follow him, and you just know that he had an angry phone conversation with his manager after the show. RIP 🙏
Road House movie? Is that right?
That's how I found out about him.
Good vocalist ,had a short run of popularity.
The man is a true entertainer
He was also on Kidsworld around this time
wow 40 yrs lateer wow
nice (was hoping for a solo...)
About 17 years old !
Great clip but this is not Blue Direction, but just some high school friends that Jeff was jamming with for the segment.
Who is in the video?
E sempre cosi' le persone che potrebbero dare molto per il loro talento se ne vanno sempre prima
💙💙💙💙💙… 🎼🎶🙏🏻🙏🏻🌺🌺
Waoo
His voice as a teen. He sounds like a 30 year old !😅
I love Jeff and have done since 1988, but…why is he wearing a watch??! 😂
