Used to sit watching Leone Westerns all day with my dad in the late 60's and 70's...taught me about "Less is more". The beautiful evocative music of Morricone was used to tell the stories with close ups of the actors faces and wide cinematic screenshots of the land. This was truly groundbreaking cinema at the time the world is a poorer place for the loss of both these geniuses but even now, a couple of weeks after the passing of the Maestro I'm still here listening to his music all the time. You sir were, are, and always shall remain a legend to me and many more like me I'm sure.
It is one of my favorites, it was the soundtrack of the French film The Professional with Jean Paul Belmondo, and I have no choice but to coincide with Lalo Schifrin's answer, when asked about the success of the Impossible Mission series, if the success it was due to the scripts, the actors, or the soundtrack; his response: "We were a formidable work team." It will take many years for us to see each other again, and I am not referring to outstanding artists, but to those formidable work teams, who with little and no budget and with great ingenuity gave us works of art that we treasure. I love how Tarantino didn’t compare him to Williams or Zimmer and instead compared him to Mozart and Beethoven. Hands down my favourite composer that’s ever lived!
He was really a great composer but Hans Zimmer and John Williams are also modern world Mozart and Beethoven so indirectly it's one and the same thing. Hans zinner, John Williams, ennio morricone and Thomas Newman all are legendary.
I totally admire Zimmer & Williams among other composers, their talents are exceptional, but their music has roots in classical music, meanwhile Ennio was more innovative and unique than his peers in his Westerns, especially the "Man with a Harmonica"...there's nothing else like it. Ennio made that harmonica scream and wail and was utilized as a chilling evocation of the pending tragedy in the film. The guitar is also an unsettling addition. That one scene has no peers on film....extremely moving and memorable, it burns into one's soul. It's haunting, yet sheer perfection. Ennio's use of vocals and whistling is also a unique trademark of his genius. RIP a master has left us, but thank God his music remains for the ages!
I was torn when I heard the passing of Ennio Morricone but also so thankful that he share the gift of love with us Maestro may you rest in peace and my condolences to family and friends your music will last forever thank from the heart.
His music has immortalized him. His genius is undeniable. He would change a movie single handedly simply with his score. There is Ennio Morricone and then there is every one else.
I grew up with his music in the 60s. Almost 60 yrs his songs in my heart. He could take the simplest melody and minor chords to make a masterpiece. One of a kind. A low budget film: A Fistful of Dollars- brought together three unknown icons of motion picture- to live forever.

Even if I find no tracks from "Once upon a time in America", one of my favourite movies ever. Thank you, Mr. Ennio Morricone. Your music is beautiful and timeless.
Morricone's orchestration is incomparable. He takes all sorts of sound making devices, from whistling, humming, hammers on metal, whatever, and creates unified sounds. He's not a Mozart or even a Beethoven. They merely used existing instruments. He created new sounds. He's more a Wagner. And although Morricone certainly utilized motifs much like Wagner, the sounds and the melodies are again beyond the imaginations of Wagner. And like Wagner, Sergio Leone filmed and edited the scenes and actions to the music, not the other way around as in most movie scores.
