This was a fantastic overview. I was looking all over for a video which showed the different types in person (rather than just describing them) so it's easier to identify on the spot. Thanks for the great video!
Ah, now I see why your garden is so good, you have two ringers on staff. One of them even comes with excavating equipment. Enjoyed the video. I was searching through looking to see if you how you get or make compost when I came to this one. Thanks for posting these.
Oh goodness, I got a kick out of this 😄! Yes- that little one would be using REAL excavating equipment if he could 😆. No compost videos yet... I'm a 'lazy' composter (I just throw everything in a pile or bin and let it break down slowly, with no attention to ratios or temperatures or turning the pile). One of my goals is to become a more efficient composter, and I want to trial several different techniques and share them here. Take care!
Great info the types of soil people have. Cool way to test what you have! We live in the sand hills of NC so our soil is very bad. This was one of the main reasons why I went to doing straw bale gardening. Now I don't have to deal with anymore of soil problems. Thanks for the info! Hope you folks have a great safe week!
CB's Greenhouse and Garden that absolutely makes sense! I still love “in-ground” gardening most of all, but find myself investigating more and more alternate options because of our awful clay soil- which is why your channel has been so helpful!
Very cool! My son and I are gardening this spring as an unschooling child-led project. We’re going to do this test today for our soil! Thank you for this video!!
Thank you! I've procrastinated on admitting I don't know my soil and I just say it's crap when anyone asks, lol. I wasn't sure exactly how ide go about it, I thought ide need to test like the ph or like checking it sorta like my compost and balancing it out sorta thing, I have no clue. Ive been gardening forever so its something i honestly should have known how to do long time ago...but im acually trying to grow grass right and needed to know what's up w my soil. Anyways, this was the most simple video I could find and follow, to help me really know what I'm working with here. And one more thing i've gotta put this out there but, you make me think of my family, like one of my sisters, totally our kinda peoples...you feel very wholesome and like, idk, comfy, lol, strange comment I know. I love your Mama style, your kiddos are adorable. Definitely checking your channel to see what your all about.
Arkansas Woodcutter you just brightened my whole day, thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and let me know what you think! Have a wonderful evening!
Growfully with Jenna seriously you have some great things going. Look at your sub count vs views you are getting a ton of traffic into your work from non subs. Only a matter of time before you explode. Stay the course.
Arkansas Woodcutter thank you! I hope you’re right. I just want to be able to help people succeed in their gardens so they can love growing plants as much as I do, but this whole RUclips algorithm is such a foreign world to me! I’m trying to stay optimistic about producing content... but sometimes it’s hard to believe I’ll ever get any traction! Your encouragement means a lot to me!
ru Grew you’ll have to let me know if you try it again (with less soap 😆), what your results are. I’ve become very interested hearing about what kind of soil everyone is dealing with!
Thank you! It is my understanding that while any type of soil may have organic matter in it, loamy soil (which is the ideal ratio of silt, sand & clay) tends to have a larger proportion of organic matter. Sandy soil tends to have the least amount of organic matter. Clay often tends to be high in organic matter, but due that sticky, dense texture the nutrients/minerals (basically all the good stuff) imparted by organic matter stays 'locked up' (or is less bioavailable). Thanks for the excellent question & take care!
It's definitely a useful read. But if it makes you feel any better, I've got a stack of at least 10 soil/gardening related books I've yet to even make a dent in! We'll get to them some day. Take care & have a great evening!
So should I add sand to clay soil or not, cause you've mentioned it twice here, but on the other episode suggested differently - that by adding sand to clay you would end up with worse soil than before. I am wondering and would be grateful for help.
I apologize for the confusion, Hubert. This being an early video, I had not done a thorough test of sand in my own soil yet, and was using advice from other sources. It's possible that the addition of horticultural sand can help clay soil (which by virtue of its large and coarse grains, does not fill in space between soil particles. Air pockets can form between the clay and grit, allowing efficient water drainage throughout the soil.), but I do not recommend using smaller grain 'playground' or all-purpose sand.

You are most welcome, Charles! Take care and enjoy your week!

You are a wonderful mother and you'll have 2 diligent grown up boys.👍
Very nice and interesting video!
Thank you!
Thank you 💚

Have fun!
Oklahoma red clay is challenging. My older gardens are in great shape & I’m working on the ones we’re expanding. Great video!

You May be the best young channel I watch. Excellent video.

Growfully with Jenna I have a friend that took 3 years to reach 1K subs. He now has 40k subs and gets 20-30k views a video. Hang in there
I LOVED your children!
New sub!!!❤🎉❤
Awe- thank you 😊. I love them too... but I'm biased 😄.
This is EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you 😊
I'm so glad! You're welcome!
Thank you so much! I’m a newbie in gardening and appreciate the detail explanation ✨
You are so welcome!
I've been bingeing your videos and this is my favourite so far 🤣, thanks for all the info re: zone 6! ❤️❤️
Thank you!!
Just found you and subscribing. Great info. VERY helpful.
Thank you so much for subscribing!
I've just been learning about soil tests - I added WAY too much soap and it just ended up all bubbly on top!
ru Grew you’ll have to let me know if you try it again (with less soap 😆), what your results are. I’ve become very interested hearing about what kind of soil everyone is dealing with!
cute family! thanks for the video. what layer is all the organic matter in, perhaps the silt layer?
Thank you!

Great video!❤❤❤
Thank you!
Thank you. I have clay soil in Illinois.
You're welcome!
Hi Jenna, You have beautiful kids! Best, Albert
Thank you Albert!
Little guy needs his own show
Haha- he'd probably enjoy that!
Thanks for teaching us my question is my soil is sand and we have never used for farming what can I do
Bought the book, just haven't gotten off my butt and read it yet. Looks like I need to stop procrastinating.

I been getting local tree cutting services to dump chipped wood at my lot he really changes the soil texture.

Now if only we have an easy pH test.
Your kids are cute but too distracting I have no idea what you said the first time had to watch it once more
Sorry about that 😄
@@GrowfullywithJenna I didn’t feel the kids were distracting at all. They made me smile!❤😀🤗
It's because it's ohio
Yep- Ohio is home to a lot of that difficult to deal with clay!
