    We’ve enjoyed celebrating Jolabokaflod as a family for several years now-a wonderful tradition! 📚🍫 A beautiful and uplifting novel I suggest (about the power of books to connect people) is Sara Nisha Adams’ “The Reading List.” Thank you for your nice flosstubes, Jacob, about stitching and traditions!

    Jacob……thank you so much for highlighting books today. There is nothing like opening a book, no matter what the content, and being immersed in it’s pages. ❤

    I went and watched BBC documentary and fell in love with Hammershoi! We have quite large art books collection but we are definitely missing Scandinavian artists! I bought the book you recommended (not arrived yet), and then I bought another one :) cannot wait to sit and read them :)

    Thank you for the lovely suggestions. I just love books!!! I've a French translation of the Islandic Sagas published in La Pleiades. It's a long time since I read it. I should get it out :) This is a lovely tradition.

      It's a pity it's nearly over! I can't believe how quick this went. I used to read so much - devoured books, but then I stopped reading. I've just started reading books again. Occasionally an audio book as well - which is nice when I stitch! :)

      Thank you Nicole! Books are absolutely amazing. I can't believe we donated suitcases full of them a couple of years ago (before we moved to the Netherlands) and still our house is filled to the rafters with them! 😂. Which then results in a 2+ hour hunt through the house with the "I know we have this book on ... somewhere..." and coming across other awesome books on the way 😂

    I’ve been recommending Threads of Life by Clare Hunter ever since I first read it. The people whose lives are recorded are truly inspiring especially the women in the prisoner of war camp - enough said -no spoilers!

    Vermeer has always been one of my favorite painters. One question, are the books you mentioned available in English? I will look up the two fiction books. Thank you Jacob for a beautiful Christmas design through Evertote.

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  4 дня назад +1

      Thank you! Vermeer is amazing. I was so happy to see the exhibition in Amsterdam a while ago - I think it will be the only time ever that these paintings have been together. It was moving. The fiction books are available in English - "Hannah's Daughters" by Marianne Fredriksson, and "The Birds" by Tarjei Vesaas. I can also highly recommend "The Ice Palace" by the same author, it's one of my favourite books ever (but I recommended it in last year's book recommendations I think!). A lot of the other craft titles haven't been translated, which is a pity. Luckily some of the art books are published in several languages so that's always helpful :).

    The paintings by Hammershoi were the main influence for the look of the movie “The Danish Girl” with Eddie Redmayne. Love the paintings and the movie.

    Hm.. well, personally, as a Swede, I been second hand store hunting for books written by Märta Bróden. Most publiced around the 1970s and they teach various yarn crafts like macreme, nålbindning, knitting, weaving.. I find those old books are easy to understand for a beginner and I have not found all that many later publiced books who ..well.. is as down to basics. Sadly, I only found a few. I am pretty sure they were publiced by Hemslöjden as part of courses back in the late 1970s.

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  4 дня назад

      You are absolutely right - I was talking about this with my mum the other day! The 'old' craft books from the 60s and 70s were so well written, very detailed in photography and instruction. Very dry and boring sometimes too - but that's what you want when you have instructions. I feel that a lot of modern instruction books are padded with needless anecdotes we don't need - like recipes where you have to scroll a mile down to get to the ingredients and instructions! 😂 I'll see if I can find any Märta Bróden, it sounds very interesting. Thank you for the recommendation!

    Prachtige boeken laat je zien!
    Helaas de York Minster nooit bezocht omdat toen de kerk werd gerestaureerd en we daarna naar Northumberland op vakantie gingen.
    Heb wel een paar borduurboeken van Jane Greenhoff als ik me de naam goed herinner. Meen dat ze ook bij een groot instituut voor handwerken werkte-- kom alleen niet op de naam..sorry,maar dat weet je vast beter dan ik.

      Oh de Minster is zo mooi Truus! Echt prachtig. Hij is inderdaad jarenlang (deels) dicht geweest. We woonden daar 15 jaar en pas de laatste paar jaren was het grote raam weer zichtbaar na jarenlange restauraties. Het is nu weer schitterend en hij kan er weer een poosje tegenaan! :)

      @truuskruidhof 4 дня назад +1

      @ModernFolkEmbroidery zou het graag willen zien,maar denk niet dat we nog naar Engeland zullen gaan. Waarschijnlijk is het net zo prachtig als de Notre Dame waar we vroeger als kind vaak kwamen als we mee voeren met de coaster van mijn vader in de vakantie.
      Mooie Kerstdagen voor jullie Jacob.🌲👼🏻🙏🌹

      @@truuskruidhof Geloof het of niet, maar na vele (zeer korte...) bezoekjes aan Parijs ben ik nog nooit de Notre Dame binnengestapt! Iedere keer hadden we net niet genoeg tijd om dat nog te doen. Ik heb het museum voor middeleeuwse kunst gezien, Sainte-Chapelle, en heel veel andere mooie dingen - maar de Notre Dame en het Louvre nog niet. Staat hoog op het verlanglijstje, hopelijk in 2025! :)
