  • I give the Ozito Charcoal starter a quick review, light up some charcoal / heat beads with it for my smoker. Lump charcoal or heat beads are great heat sources when using a smoker such as bullet smokers, weber kettles, BGE, Drum Smokers, Offset smokers, vertical smokers etc, and provide a different taste to the food you are cooking, than say using gas or LPG. Lots of low and slow cooking methods for beef ribs, brisket, pork belly burnt ends etc, also require a heat source that can run for a long time (sometimes 8-12 hours or more) and so charcoal or heat beads are an excellent choice of fuel.
I also give the charcoal lighter a go over some pork crackling as I heard it's a great cheat's method for finishing off pork crackle.

Good to see there's still potential candidates for a Darwin Award out there.
Ignore multiple warnings in the manual about placing the tip in coals - check!
Circumvent the rocker switch safety - check!
No less than 8 highlighted warnings in the manual but "it doesn't really tell you anything you need to know" - check!
Still, thanks for the review. I think I'll definitely get one, but I'll follow the instructions and use the safety switch as intended . Cheers.

Why not just use a butane blowtorch? so much easier and more portable. the elephant in room that everyone is trying to avoid is that its connected to 240volts. Hardly useful away from a socket. Nope, butane canister with trigger attachment is the way to go.

I was thinking of this too. How long will it take to light using butane torch compare to this? I guess you have to hold it instead of cable tie.

Running that thing for 5min and paying 28c per Kw/h which is what you roughy pay here in Perth will run you 20c
One of those firefighters cost you 25c - pretty comparable
Considering it costs $30 you would have to so 600 cooks to break even.
I don’t think you buy these things to save money though.

Sorry, this a reply after a year but isn't this math off? A 2000w device will use ~ 33.33Kws a minute. 5 minutes of usage is 166.7Kw. If the power price is 28c per Kw/h, 166.7Kws will cost ~ 4.7 cents. That's cheap as chips.
