  • Peter Frankopan, author of 'The Silk Roads', proposes a new way of understanding the past and of connecting context and ideas so that we might learn the lessons of history. Part of our 30 Reformations series at Hay Festival 2017.
Our 30th anniversary coincided with the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his Theses to the door at Wittenberg. So we invited international thinkers at our festivals around the world to propose their reformations of institutions and authorities, re-imagining the world.
You can watch the full hour-long event, including the Q&A, over on our Hay Player now: www.hayfestiva...
We'll be releasing other reformations daily from now to the end of the year - subscribe and be the first to see them.

Just came across his book on silk roads and I’m enjoying it so far. I was still a bit skeptic until I watched this video which gave me sufficient reasons to read him more

The Minoan civilisation was ruled with a strong female presence. It was beautiful but was completely destroyed almost overnight due to its lack of defensive power.

The problem with wars is that the world of men has been based on strength for centuries. Women on independent roles in this man's world are allowed only 2 of them - 'more man in quality than men themselves' and 'leader over women'. Women's rights are a very recent story. Hence the excesses, we are just growing up a generation of girls who demonstrate non-male leadership qualities. So the past cannot be the measure here.

Or Tacitus????? Talk about PC history rewrites. Women are the most important writers and Kazakhstan is the centre of the world. Mm. Maybe. It’s very topical though, isn’t it?
