I believe it has more to do with the fact that they are right on the coast. The cliffs have waves constantly crashing against them. The porous metal surfaces rust easily when exposed to the ocean spray, and the house is totally open. So, the cover is to protect the grills from the ocean spray.
Most stoves have that cover in méxico, Even if You are in the city far away from the ocean. Your typical mexican Kitchen is small and often has no backsplash so it serves those two purposes. I'm mexican and live in Guatemala and it's Also the same way here.

Just recently discovered this channel. Owning one of these as a holiday home would be fabulous. We also use covers on gas stoves in South Africa, I've never really ask about the why, it just makes sense to have one I guess
A great tour, such a wonderful home! The only downside is that I couldn't see where to park my 85m superyacht. Surely every coastal holiday house has a dock nearby.
The glass top on cooker is a safety thing so kids can't get to the button easily and also it acts as a splash back for when frying foods. It's also if ya don't turn cooker off properly it stops gas flow.
